Did something change?

It sure got quieter around here, suddenly. And less abrasive. I wonder what changed?
-
I don’t have the slightest idea...lol

You know this is a great site and we have great members here. I appreciate what the administrator has created in providing a more laid back feeling than what I read on TH. I felt the same way in joining TM, and now TB. I am just not suited for TH as it does not give me a warm feeling.
Tensions are tough now with Covid-19 pandemic, and I know the Netherlands have been hit rather hard. I can understand the stress FranklinD must be under and hope he is doing well and wish him well. Hope he comes back after April 22 to continue contributing here as I truly appreciate his insight on so many topics, especially legal perspectives.
Then there is the stress for those of us that have careers (full or part time) that are out of work. Musicians are feeling this particularly hard. So yes, something did change. Our world balance, and risk to lives is being threatened. But one thing I hope never changes, and that is to keep TB as positive and warm and inviting to new members and us old folk as much as possible. I think our administrator has been doing a good job at making this so.

And with less aggressive s*** sturrers.

I am sure the quiet is just temporary...
A contentious thread got locked down, a second one was started - but immediately reduced to a very low level bickering that had nothing to do with the original theme. That second thread was also locked down. I have no indication if any resolution was attempted by PM before the first or second lockdown. If I was new here, I would just leave. I stay because there are some old friends, unfortunately not because of the "content".
I continue to see reasons why I do not post much in any trumpet forums anymore. The threads get way off track, the clowns inject "junk", the value add for new members is teaching them to find content in a lot of wasted bits. Kind of like panning for gold...

@ROWUK I agree with you that TB has not yet reached the kind of wealth of information that TM had... but then, many old TM members did not switch to TB when TM suddenly went dead.

I do not think that the problem is number of members. What bothers me is who posts why. I do not share the sense of humor of others and having an opinion just because we can is not always a good reason to torpedo threads. I am convinced that many think that they are funny and do not even realize the damage that they do. Sometimes just keeping a thread serious would be a great course of action. The NY Phil controversy is a good example. What torpedoed it had nothing to do with the charge or the aftermath. The second thread was simply embarassing.

Yes, it has been quieter. I wish them all the best. And I realize it's human nature to dig in our heels and lose objectivity once in a while. We've all done it. I've done it. But I suspect that if these 2 bans are temporary, then the quiet will be temporary, too. And I think that TB's growth will be limited, if we continue to allow such behavior. (I hope I'm wrong.)
TH would have edited/deleted the posts in the threads in question. And if the comments continued, TH would have deleted the threads. This can appear heavy-handed, but I think it works. And while I think our Admin has done a great job, I think he should consider deleting those threads (and future threads that get out of hand).

This is my concern as well. I know that over editing can be damaging but if it is used wisely to promote the advancement of good ideas and defuses the anger the that risks the credibility of the site, then this is a necessary tool to keep TB moving forward.

Mike I agree. I really hope editing is kept to a minimum but when needed to keep discussion in harmony with the need to diffuse anger, then so be it. I really want TB to grow and be a leader in providing information to trumpet players.

I would like to say, though, that censorship should be aimed at vulgarity, name calling and other insulting comments and not just a difference of opinion. It's possible to disagree without being offensive.

@Kehaulani
It's possible to disagree without being offensive.I could not agree more.

And I will agree not more!

I agree with what's been said.
All things considered, I'm trying to do my best here. Can't do much about the lack of content (just think -- when did you first sign up for TrumpetHerald? I think it was 16 years ago for me!)
I'll keep the site going indefinitely...but it's up to you to populate it with valuable content.
And sometimes...people get banned for a few days. No need to get so upset about things anonymous people say online!

I’m a moderator on another site (nothing to do with trumpets) and we generally let silliness go, but name-calling and vulgar posts are deleted. Very much of that from the same person results in permanent removal. Same goes for people who want to do nothing but argue and are childish and arrogant.
I became involved in one of the recent disagreements here and was berated repeatedly even after trying to keep the discussion friendly. People who know it all and have a chip on their shoulder can be hard to deal with. Hey, I know that I don’t know it all, but I know what I know...

The Administrator has, I believe, done a good job in finding a middle ground. The point of a forum is free sharing of ideas - which can have obvious challenges.
I am vehemently opposed to deletion of content unless that content includes actionable defamation. That being said, I think locking threads when they get out of hand, stating at the end of them precisely why they are being locked as the Admin has done, and, as necessary, taking steps where individuals are concerned may be a far more difficult approach, but it is a far better one in terms of avoiding biasing a site and having the site become an advocate for a point of view instead of a free exchange.

As sort of an aside, things are also relatively slow over on TH. And none of the usual raging controversies.
Maybe everyone is nursing bed sores from sitting on their butts in front of their computers and TVs.
-
Back when Rowuk and I joined TM as moderators, there was a lot more trumpet talk. The lounge and the Cage were for other stuff.
-
Well, as the admin mentioned earlier.... the members are responsible for the content.
We are all only going to get out of this site what we put into it.
-
I run a homestead here. I have goats, a garden, etc...lots to do! That's of course on top of my day job and other responsibilities. Unfortunately, I don't have time to fill this site with content. So...somebody else has to! Otherwise it just stagnates. I'm trying to attract more visitors but believe me it isn't easy.
