    • First gig today

      We played our first gig today. It was at a farmers market, with these venues operating as essential services, albeit with some restrictions. We performed as a piano/bass duo. The market was pretty well attended, considering it was the day after the 4th of July. Masks and social distancing were in place. Everybody was friendly, happy to be out, and happy to be hearing some live music. We jokingly called our band The Social Dissonance. 😉

      @Dale-Proctor said in Seeking input on Rules:

      Keep it simple - no profanity, no name calling, nothing unrelated to trumpets/cornets/flugelhorns/etc. and musical topics in general. That gives topics a pretty wide latitude without excessive rules. Be civil to your fellow members if there’s a disagreement on some point, and keep things PG in case younger people are looking in.

      I like this reply. Building on it, first and foremost, I'm looking for "community", for an opportunity to talk to like-minded people. And although I may have questions from time-to-time, I'm not here looking for answers.

      So I agree with @Dale-Proctor. Keep it focused on the trumpet and related topics, with wide latitude. But above all else, keep it friendly.

    • RE: Structure of the Trumpet by Yamaha

      I find this to be a very unfortunate thread. And to the moderators/administrator I ask ... Is this site is better off having this thread?

      Much of what we do when playing the trumpet is indiscernible, and as such, is open to interpretation. And much of the physics and physiology we reference is often anecdotal and unscientific. Because of this, there's very little value when some posts a link and declares it to be dogma.

      We all dig in our heels from time to time, as was very evident in this thread. This is human nature, and is understandable. But this site needs moderators who know how to respectfully put out these fires, and not fan the flames. In addition this site needs an administrator who knows when to delete self-destructive threads that may cause irreparable harm.

    • RE: The One

      @Bob-Pixley said in The One:

      I have a 1976 Bach Strad, ML 43 that is a terrific trumpet. I've owned it since the early 1980s, and although I've bought (and sold) many other trumpets since then, the Bach has always been my "go to" trumpet. Great sound and intonation, even scale, plays easily.

      I'm also partial to my 1974 Bach 43*, which I purchased back in the mid-70s.

      When I started playing again (about 10 years ago after a 20-year layoff), I started looking for a new horn. My 43* took a lot of abuse over the years. I went on an extended safari for 2-3 years, looking for a new trumpet. In the end, there were none that I liked better than my 43*. So I sent it off to Kanstul to erase years of wear and rebuild the valves. There are many good horns out there, of course. But the 43* is the one I'm most used to playing, and thus, it's "the one" for me.

      Nice. I don't use a medical bag any more. I don't need much in the Emergency Department. Here's a pic of what is actually in my pockets at work ... along with a description of what other people think is in my pockets. 😉

      @ROWUK said in PLEASE KEEP CIVIL!:

      The discussion here in this thread is exemplary of something far different. No one asked why escalation occured - “Keep it Civil” is just a bandaid - a lame attempt to keep an infection from spreading. I would insist that a band aid on top of a festering wound is not the best solution - although for a while, out of sight is out of mind. We may need some time until a diagnosis is possible, but I do not see the questions even being asked.

      I don't think we need a diagnosis. The lack of civility was due to one person, and assisted at times by one other person. I don't think the reason for their bad behavior had anything to do with the other members here. They are both gone/banned.

      This thread also evolved into "where do we go from here". That's a good thing. But I think it's independent of the bad behavior of a former member.

      @ROWUK said in Valve oils:

      I successfully use LaTromba T2 (new bottle), Ultra Pure, Hetmans (various thicknesses) and Monster (various thicknesses). LaTromba T2 is the cheapest (in Europe). I buy it by the case.

      They are all "equal" on my horns if applied properly.

      I agree that most any of these oils would be adequate. Personally, I use Hetman, not because I think it's the best. I use it because it gets the job done, it's the oil my tech uses, and it's easy to obtain in various in various formulations.

      Regarding use, once a week, I wipe down my valves and casings with a lint-free cloth, wipe out the vents and caps with a tissue, and then reoil and lube. No problems. No buildup. No need to oil daily.

      Hey! I just got it to play! But I had to blow quite hard. I used to play cornet 60 years ago and don’t remember the cornet being this hard to play. It requires an almost superhuman effort to sound anything. That can’t be right.

      Do you have a friend who plays the trumpet? If so, let him/her try the horn, to see if it's difficult to play. If it is, then take it to a tech.

    • RE: Future survival of this forum

      Kehaulani reached out to me on a different forum and asked me to post this message on his behalf. I've not been part of this thread, and am not commenting on it personally. I'm just posting this message for him.

      Mike

      "Mike has graciously agreed to post this message for me. I was involuntarily logged out of every one of my sites. Logging back in to TrumpetBoards has been especially problematic. Everything I have done over a three-day period has been to no avail. My solution is really to just forget it and withdraw from the site.

      But before I do, there is a current thread that my withdrawal is pertinent to answering its question as well as the reason I'm just going ahead and withdrawing.

      For the most part this Forum is more of a social club than a real exchange of musical knowledge. That's O.K. And for those who use it for that, I hope they enjoy the camaraderie. Very few members have any real musical depth or experience to pass along. This is also O.K. This is not judgmental, just an observation.

      It's been pointed out that there is an increase of people signing up. I would counter that many of these don't return, either.

      I need as many answers as I can get. This Forum seldom does it. I can get the same and more from Trumpet Herald. Yes, it has some jack-asses. I can be one. And IMO, there is WAY too much “paralysis-by-analyses”, micro-nit picking, threads that can't stick to the subject and, sometimes, just plain old misinformation.

      But it has a much larger contributor base than this Forum and once you've become accustomed to its “contributors” can be of considerable help. The kind of help I need is seldom to be found here.

      So, I hope this answers the Thread question from my POV and, in doing so, also explains why I'm not going to be an active member. It's not negative.

      I thank Mike very much for posting this and appreciate it very much.

    • RE: Carol Brass Sticky Valves

      Very sorry this is happening.

      New valves need to be broken in. Some more than others. Wipe down the valves and the valve casings with a lint-free cloth and then reoil. Do this every day for 2-4 weeks. If they're still sticking, return the horn.

      I'm not a tech, so the following is just my "2 cents" about valves.

      • Valves sticking only when playing (and not sticking when you're not playing), suggests your hand-positioning (at least in part) may be contributing.

      • Valves sticking after the horn warms up (both when playing and not playing), suggests it's a problem with the valves.

      @rowuk said in Tough Decision to make:

      @administrator
      My take on this is perhaps a bit unconventional, but I would insist that between those two horns, it does not matter. Regardless of which on you pick, there will always be something in the back of your mind questioning that choice.
      That being said, I do not believe in a lot of this synergy blah. I do not believe that most musicians have a "well formed concept" that would guide them only to specific hardware ....

      I agree. It's rarely ever the hardware that makes the difference. Buy the horn that inspires you the most. And although this isn't always possible, especially with boutique horns, play the horn before you buy it.

      I play a Bach 43*. It's been my main horn since 1975. It's perfect for me for 2 reasons. First, I'm emotionally attached to it, having played it for 45+ years. Second, it's what I'm physically used to playing. For me, it has nothing to do with the horn.

      All things being equal, I say keep the old treads unlocked. This would give people the ability to add updates and related questions. But I'm happy with whatever the admins/moderators want.

      On a related note, there's a resurrected thread on TH, that started with a legitimate question about pricing, but reemerged 2 years later with hyperbole and infighting. Maybe this is a good argument for locking old threads. 😉

      @tmd do you ever play the alto horn?

      What are you my wife or something? 😉 (Just kidding.)

      The horn is just for fun. I got it at Baltimore Brass. At the time, they had a half dozen of them, all priced to sell. And at only $100, for me, it was worth the price.

      I occasionally take it to jam sessions. Only problem is that I have to transpose everything for Eb/F horn. I use a flugelhorn mouthpiece, making it easier to play, although I realize that a real Alto Horn player might cringe at my choice.
