      116 years young........

At the risk of going way off topic, we adopted a rescue dog (white German Shepherd) back in October. The shelter names didn't fit, and I wanted a short and distinct name so he'd know when I'm talking to him. Plus, he's "really cool" so we named him Bix. And we needed a birth date to license him, so we picked March 10th.

Not only does he not mind my playing, he seems to love it (must have a tin ear and no real taste in music). He lies next to me when I'm playing, and even pesters me if I haven't started practicing at the normal time.

    • RE: Star Spangled Banner

This message is from a Marine Corps Colonel in Afghanistan. I think he'd be ok with Whitney and Gaga's renditions. Fingers crossed for the Super Bowl.

"So with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event: save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts.

Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten - straight up, no styling "Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don't make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification.

Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 96-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love - not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician. They could see that from your costume, makeup and your entourage.

Sing 'The Star Spangled Banner' with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America, not you.

And please not everything needs to be spunked up! We’re getting a little weary of that.

Francis Scott Key does not need any help."

    • RE: Jackie Gleason Plays Cornet

      @tjcombo

From Wikipedia: In 1955 Gleason gambled on making it (The Honeymooners) a separate series entirely. These are the "Classic 39" episodes, which finished 19th in the ratings for their only season. They were filmed with a new DuMont process, Electronicam; like kinescopes, it preserved a live performance on film but with higher quality, comparable to a motion picture. That turned out to be Gleason's most prescient move. A decade later, he aired the half-hour Honeymooners in syndicated reruns that began to build a loyal and growing audience, making the show a television icon.

I know a lot of people on this board also play alto/tenor horn, euphonium, and so on...
      So do I (Yamaha alto):

Guilty as charged. Wessex BR140 Baritone. I'm even worse on it than on the small horns, but it's a lot of fun.

And the LEAST common method is probably the one I use on my Connstellation. Two zip/cable ties added to adjacent pipes so that the "knobs" hit. It doesn't interfere with playing, and rotating one tie to move the knob enables slide removal for cleaning or draining.

@j-jericho Before daylight savings time, people just adopted a "summer schedule" or "double summer schedule." In the former, they scheduled everything an hour earlier. In the latter, they scheduled everything hours earlier. Leave the clocks alone. Just change the schedule.

I agree. And I point this out in every DST discussion. DST doesn't save any daylight, and adapting schedules to nature makes much more sense. The only thing dumber than DST is "permanent" DST; only our government could cook that one up and suggest that it's a good idea.

    • RE: Hetman. What's up?

Below is a post from the oTHer site, and from a trusted source. I've found that many retailers try to stock Hetman"s, but are having a hard time with supplies. Sam Ash, Dillon, WWBW and ACB all keep trying. I think Sam Ash has #1 right now and ACB has #1 and 2 in stock. A while back, I got #1 and #3 from WWBW online, but found #2 in a local store. It's out there; you just have to work at it.

Hetman is still very much in business and making their wonderful products. There have been some serious delays in distribution over the past few years. From what I hear now, there is a supply chain issue with them getting their bottles which is causing some major delays. I order hetman from several different vendors and they sell out of what they get pretty quickly, which then makes stock levels at the store level pretty low. Hetman is still one of my best sellers and one of my favorite oils.

As for the Meinlschmidt oil... Meinlschmidt was the European distributor for Hetman for many years. With changes in EU regulation on oils and bottles along with slow delivery of Hetman, they needed to do something to fill the void, so they developed their own oils which are very similar. I am not a chemist nor do I know the formulas, they the Meinlschmidt oil is good. I ordered a bunch from them and have been starting to use it in the shop.

For exactly this reason, we installed the office of Global Moderator; but so far, I have no technical details on how to keep TB running in case of harm to the administrator... if this continues, and if no one except for the administrator knows how TB really works and where it is hosted, we are risking the same kind of demise as with TM.

All the more reason to wish our creator a safe and successful move. We all appreciate his initiative and hard work in hosting this site. Best wishes Administrator aka LaTrompeta.

    • RE: Help me identify this Conn cornet

This listing at Austin Custom Brass has a lot of similarity to yours. The location and style of bracing matches, but this one has a 3rd valve slide stop and no pinky ring. Looks like it might've had the connection for a mechanism on the first valve slide soldered over as well.

      https://www.austincustombrass.biz/pre-owned-cornets/?sort=pricedesc&limit=12&mode=4&_bc_fsnf=1&brand=11

Trent doesn't mention the vintage, but the serial number would indicate 1924.

As a person who is less than wealthy, I am excluded from a lot of things that require wealth. I cope by doing as much as I can myself. Paying professionals outrageous rates for adjustments and minor repairs is out of the question. I've found that such information is guarded by practitioners to protect their incomes and exclude or discourage DIYers like myself. It's been difficult to discover good and 'open source' types of info. Most often I'm told to go patronize a pro.

It's probably stupid of me to ask this, but is there a chance that somehow the valves may have got mixed up ?
      George

Not stupid to ask. I thought it possible so I tried swapping valves around on my Getzen. Not sure I got all the combinations, but couldn't make it act anything like @bigdub's issue. Of course, different horn...
