Once a good foundation is laid on a house, we generally leave it alone and build up from there. ... Nope, for me, I always revert to the foundations when I'm not playing my best. I almost never revert to my home's foundation. Maybe the storm drain, sewer, or hot water tank but almost never the foundation.

I think it's great in having a "vacation" home to go to from time to time.

Look as if the tracks are listing around car #3. Any chance the painting can be repainted to fix the problem with the tracks... This will make me feel much better... as I have a one track mind.

    • RE: Covid-19 Closing Down Music Venues

As a physician. I would like to share some personal patient experiences that I hope gives a sobering perspective to all my musician friends here on TB. Stay healthy, Please:

“So, what if, any, exposure to COVID did you have?” It’s a story I ask to every COVID patient I admit or care for. The stories are becoming increasingly alarming. They speak to both our marked uptick in community spread and also the apathy/ lack respect for this disease. Here are a few of the stories of COVID positive patients i have encountered in the last week:

Upstanding citizen in a nice suburban neighborhood: “I knew all 4 people in my house were COVID positive but we didn't feel that bad; so we hosted a 40 person graduation party. We didn't tell any of the guests we were positive.”

Construction worker: “Everyone I work with has a flu-like illness but no one wants to believe it’s COVID so no one else is getting tested or staying home or wearing a mask “

Grocery store clerk: “I kept going to work during the three days my COVID test was pending. I knew it might be positive but I really had to work”.
==> it WAS positive. And In those 3 days at work she interacted with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of customers

Random girl: “I knew I was COVID positive but I got really bored of staying home so I went out and ran errands”. “Did you at least wear a mask?” “No”. Where did she go? Grocery store. Target. Convenience store. Park.

“I went to a funeral and now 10 people from the funeral are all positive for COVID”

“My daughter works at a local daycare and caught COVID. 4 days after she had symptoms I developed them too.” ...........a few days later, we admitted the daughter, too. For COVID-induced psychosis. A legit and terrifying thing utterly unique to COVID.

“I work as a housekeeper. I try my best to wear gloves and mask the entire time I am in a strangers house. But I go into 5+ houses a day”.

“I live with My niece. She works at a laundromat. She developed symptoms last week”.

“I developed a fever last Wednesday And was coughing. I went to the beach Saturday anyways. We ended up coming home Sunday because I was having shaking chills and fevers to 103F”

“ I knew my coworker who I work closely with had COVID and I was supposed to be isolating. But we hosted a dinner party Saturday night for 2 neighbrhohood families. Today I tested positive. Do you think I should tell the other families?”

“I am a prisoner at a butner and eveyone there has COVID. EVERYONE. There is no way we can socialLY distance. NONE. We are doomed. It’s like we’ve been given a death sentence”.

Someone said on my local moms groups the other day that the COVID info is too dramatic; it always feels like the sky is falling. And people are getting immune to the news.

It’s very hard NOT to feel like the sky is falling when the numbers keep steadily rising and the stories become increasingly more egregious.

I hope these stories illustrate how widespread and endemic this is becoming in our Communtiy and emphasize the need to continue to take precautions to keep yourself and your family safe. At this point There is an extremely high probability that whenever you go out, someone in your grocery store has it. Someone in your neighborhood or workplace has it. Your lovely dinner party host may have it and choose not to disclose to you.
Assume eveyone has it. Wear a mask. wash your hands. Do not become complacent.

@Dr-Mark I learn that we need an intimate connection to the BASICS - regardless of how advanced certain aspects of our playing might be.

Just like you cannot build a quality house without a foundation. Then once the house is built (advanced materials), it is filled with personal decor which makes it a home (the accomplished musician). I think this metaphor describes how this approach correlates to building a high quality musician.

Well, as I read it, it's not a pursuit for perfection, rather an arbitrary time frame to just meet the challenge of doing what one can do within a timef frame; something to do for fun and challenge during this virus period to beat the boredom.

      Never waste a note...

I could say the same in reading the phrasing of Charlie Parker. His notes don't flow as easily on a three valved instrument as it does with the keys on the saxophone.

I have tried to play through studies buy removing the bars. Just playing the lines without being "confined" to 3,4,5 or 6 beats to the measure. Doing this is amazing at freeing up your constraint to time and opens up more freedom to phrasing.

I can do it in one week with the mouthpiece tied behind my back!

That's great! Super! So we can expect (excitedly) to see your rendition of Charlier #1 on YouTube? ...the idea of preparing Charlier pieces and posting them wasn't posted as a joke.

This would be a welcomed experiential notch to put in my belt. I really could achieve this in a week if I would be more focused toward this goal AND Tobylou would except on his end. However, it appears he has declined at this time to accept the challenge. So with my current patient load made possible by our Covid friend, and United Healthcare sending me large batches of virus related care guidelines to write, I will keep my more creative time priorities focused to the medicine side of my life. Once Tobylou changes his plans, your suggestion is well accepted.

These are great, some of which could be a nice challenge for me to paint. I love them. The older the better, of course.

The question is: Are you trained in painting trains?

Oh, but there has been on other threads. I posted one as an example on the history of prevalence of music types from 1913 to 2019. Quit interesting as well as entertaining. Give it a view.

I would have contributed some photography, but since that thread was started by an individual to showcase his art and he never asked for other artistic input, I would feel like I was stepping on his posts.

So important to bring this out. I did not think that was his intent (using Artists) but I can understand your perception since most posts are his. I think if you start contributing (would love to see your art) this may break the perception that it is one individual only.

George, it doesn't matter what I say, Dr. Go is emotionally headhunting,

That is how we as physicians function. Glad its working on you. You just made my day validating this. So I will keep a head's up for more of your commentary, but I agree with GeorgeB, we should focus towards the topic of ballads. I for one would NOT classify Herbie Hancocks Headhunter album as one of ballads. See. Just sticking to the point of the thread.

I see no need for 1. a worthless string, 2. humor, 3. artists on board, and at least a few more. Its a trumpet site so it needs to be about trumpets.

Worthless strings are in the mind of the reader. Some will find value to another persons perceived worthless encounter. To that individual, s/he can choose to just ignore that thread.

Humor... that helps us vent and adds some flavor to the discussion as well. A trumpet site needs to be addressing the needs of a trumpet player, and we as trumpet players do things the other 23 hours of the day when we are not practicing our trumpets. I find in interesting in the common threads of interests that trumpet players share. So I think this is the "sauce" that helps season the meat (trumpet).

Artists on Board... On TB this was started by a painter. It does seem to be heavily weighed toward one individual. I was the one who stated this parallel thread on TM. It was started not as a promotion, but as an acknowledgement of a painting I purchased from a prior trumpet player artist living in Florida that had a unique eye for painting the trumpet in a dynamic way. This thread then brought out a multitude of artists, as that was the point of my thread that was called "Artists among artists". It worked, as it brought out a lot of TM members passions in painting, photography, wood carvings. On TB, we just apparently do not have the same "volume" of trumpet players involved in other forms of art. Clearly we have one that is very involved and I still find it of value to see all the contributions that individual has made. With that said, it should not be a retail effort on the part of the artist, and I have not seen that to be the case. My challenge to everyone here: If you have other forms of art that you do (I know wood working is one of them as shown by several on this forum) then please contribute to that thread so it does not appear to be a one man show. As that artist originally titled the thread Artists (not Artist) on board. So Artists... Contribute.

I don't know if its rules you need or a basic housecleaning.

Rules are important, but even more important are making sure we are sticking to the rules. If this is assured, there will be less housecleaning that is necessary. After all, isn't that what rules are for?

...until this forum has more meaty topics.

The dearth of responses to such topics says to me that either there is no interest even if useful, or beyond a poster's knowledge.

...The alternate is more distraction with superfluous material.

I think with a new forum we have yet found this balance. Perhaps when we are offered more meat choices on the menu this will happen. And superfluous material is a necessary balance... kinda like the sauce to the meat if it were. Let that simmer in your mind, after setting the temp at 95 degrees for 20 minutes (if that is the current temperature in your climate). Bottom line: This is an effort of love in development and I truly believe we are finding the way.
