I always recommend a qualified teacher.
You can get lessons online if you are not within travelling distance of a teacher.
I taught trumpet lessons during my college years while minoring in music at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, so I believe I was qualified to teach trumpet lessons during that time. Now I am just a physician so know better than to try to teach trumpet lessons at this time.

@Dr-GO
looks like a good design if compact is important. I might think about a new design someday. Thank you!
I prefer the aniline leather, it's so beautiful and feels so nice in your hands.
DenaYes, Torpedo tends to use more hardened leather.

RE: 5pc Leather Mouthpiece Case
Torpedo Bags also make leather holders, a bit more compact:

I practice at 5 am to 6 am mornings .I thought 5 AM was when you were getting IN not when you're getting UP.
Some of us start work now when we used to go to sleep - "maturity" sucks!
In medicine, it's more like eat when you can eat, sleep when you can sleep, and don't f**k around with the pancreas!

...At Trumpetmaster I made a point about getting to the meat immediately. Here we seem to be afraid of blood.
I personally am not afraid of the blood, it's more the spattering of brain tissue that concerns me.

My first stroke ended my conducting.
So sorry to hear this. Hopefully there is good prevention now to keep the progression under control. My thoughts go out to you.

Question Kehaulani, did you start conducting the Arlington Symphony before or after obtaining the DMA for Conducting?I was the rehearsal conductor under David Pollitt as part of my work towards my Doctorate at Catholic University of America, D.C.
BTW, that's Arlington, Virginia not Arlington, Texas.
So after you degree, did you get another conductor gig?

It doesn’t matter, I am spending ever less time here. If you all are content with ever more pale shades of grey, good luck on building membership.
No Rowuk... Please come here more often. God knows I need more color in my life!

RE: Attracting members who are interested in things musical/trumpet
@OldSchoolEuph said in Attracting members who are interested in things musical/trumpet:
I'm nudging this thread again in light of recent unfortunate events.
The thread regarding the merits of investing in grad school is exactly the sort of content that this site needs to be of value to a broader community. Unfortunately, it devolved into something regrettable. I would have liked to make some counter points to the excellent first opinion that had been offered there, but another had taken a view in the opposite direction from my own and proceeded in a manner that is certainly contrary to the intent of this thread here (well, unless looking to attract Springer fans).
Now it is locked, and thus an opportunity missed - unless, with the offending party no longer participating, perhaps it could be either unlocked or restarted ?????
Agreed. It was a great discussion topic. The person starting it was unfairly targeted and now that the arrow has been spent, so to speak, perhaps we can get that discussion back on target!

Hey @barliman2001, I am curious about this. For a beginner like me, is there any advantage to be gained in getting different mouthpiece sizes now, or should I just keep going with what comes with the new trumpet?
How does the trumpet sound with the current mouthpiece? I have found there to be many advantages but more with the back end related to the gap. This function is more brand dependent than size dependent.

RE: PLEASE KEEP CIVIL!
Barleman... Having additional help would lighten the load. May I nominate Stumac. I am almost certain if elected, he would serve. It would be an honor to have Rowuk as well, but he may be a bit burned out from a prior gig.

Maybe a troll that was not successful in getting us riled up...
Or better: someone with a life and the trumpet in proper perspective
Or: ran to his teacher and explained what he understood - pissing the teacher off, who told him never to come back
Or: an internet Zapper with a 2 day attention span but no identity. If someone needs to change their name, we must ask why - do they fear that we will google it and discover wherelse they visit? Pretty naive to believe that the name change is good for anything...
This is a person under amazing stress. This person needs help and for someone who understands, to listen, to hear. But to all of our members here at TB, I strongly urge, do not engage in any way with A-Former-User.

RE: PLEASE KEEP CIVIL!
Barlimann... You do great work here. You keep us in balance and you have just worked though a challenged that most physicians avoid. I have even more respect for you as a result. Please, do not let the strain of this singular dynamic make that decision to leave. Please run this by me first. I really want to help both you and this site move forward. This site is a breath of fresh air, when certain particulates are filtered. You keep the wind of discussion fresh and clean. I look forward to inhaling much much more of your content in the future.

Sounds good. I'm in Texas and most people are not wearing masks or keeping social distancing and I just heard on the news that it's third in the nation in rising cases. Since I'm in the most vulnerable demographic, I'm starting to get worried.
My thoughts go out to you. I am sure you will be one of the smarter ones and will wear a mask when going out and only going to stores were employees wear masks and keep your distance from less considerate individuals that will not wear their masks.
