It's maybe not the best love song ever written. But it's one of the better "angry love songs". 😉

It's one of my favorites, and a popular song in my jazz trio's regular lineup. Initially, we performed it as a ballad. It became a crowd-favorite after we switched over to a double-time feel, to give the song a bit more energy.

Mike, I would disagree. Nothing says love like "The Look of Love":

Of note, Li'l Darlin' was drafted initially by composer Neal Hefti as a driving up-beat tune. Everyone knows it as this and I must admit I have NEVER heard it as a bop tune:

It depends on how it is played. I have heard it as Latin, driving bop and ballad. It was written as a ballad but has taken many changes by many musicians.

Compared to today's midstream music, I think that can be attributed to three fundamental things.

The use of the same (basically) fundamental harmonic structure.

Not sure I would agree with this one. Modal use and forms have progressed significantly since Bach's time.

I'm a dinosaur, Steve. I threw my cell phone in the garbage when I retired 20 years ago..and with good reason. Today I only own and use a basic desktop computer.

And what then, a land-line phone?

What about the classic tin cans connected by metal wire?

The real good news is I am playing in a club tomorrow night with a trio, and using social distancing. That is technology that I understand and can work with!

    • RE: The New Reality

I am in the process of doing this with one of the big bands I play with. The leader sent us a click count file and we were to play against the rhythm laid down initially and then record on our audio files, then send the audio recording to the leader and he would splice into the composite recordings he receives. I have heard the developing additions and it works well, the only problem, is I do know for the life of me, how to record my part on my laptop at the same time that I am running the click count program. I have a call in to the band leader to call back and tutor me through the process.

In the UK the lockdown is still in place. No one knows if rehearsals and shows will even be back on by Christmas. With no reason to practice I must admit to a lack of motivation. I’m not sure I’m that bothered by it either. I might just sell my stuff and retire. Who knows?

No don't do that! You have wonderful equipment (your horns too)!

Life will be renewed. Stick with it sir! Music is healing yes? If in a year or so you want to reassess, then that would be fine, but if you give these up prematurely it will be harder and likely more of a hassle to replace them.

Staying in shape is a process... We need to find larger spaces to practice in.... Player/horn->room->ears/brain. We are creatures of habit.

The biggest space to fill in the process of staying in shape I would argue... is the mind.

...the exact preparation of the brass alloy used, the exact methods used e.g. bending with lead. Even if you did duplicate.

AND that would be impossible with Federal restrictions place on lead content in brass that was in effect post 1952.

I just need to make the change. I think I can do that tonight.

No problem, I don't need change for my contribution. More to come after I pay of Uncle Sam in mid-July.
