I'm not going to say it won't work for someone else, but if I free buzzed an hour a day, my chops would be inflexible, even somewhat hardened, and it would definitely work to my detriment.

Agreed. Not free buzzing with absolutely no resistance, but playing (not buzzing) into a towel. This is a totally different process. Try it. Experience the feeling on your lips when you finish. It feels different, You can feel the tone.

For sure you won't get if if you don't try. I am not going to say it is impossible, but it is improbable. Again, let me reflect that you need muscle tone to do this. It takes 6 weeks to add to tone, and that is if you do it right.

Let me ask this question, would you expect a weight lifter that can press 200 lbs to lift (without a spotter) 300 lbs in 6 weeks? That is quite a demand. And to do this without straining or pulling muscle is the other risk that must be balanced. If the 6 week goal was to get to 225 lb, then a much higher chance of achieving this would be seen.

So can you get a solid D range to an G in 6 weeks? That is an audacious goal. I do believe the E can be achieved, and perhaps the F, but another whole step to G is quite a task to achieve in 6 weeks, based on the training of muscle to support such a demand in such a short time.

To say it is impossible, I cannot go there. Here is what I suggest doing. Try to find the slurring studies of Cat Anderson and start working on these. Also, in between practice, take your mouthpiece and play it into a hand towel. Do this a half hour, twice a day. For the majority of the time (75%), take you mouthpiece towel range to that C. Then the additional time, start working the mouthpiece towel to above the C.

The reason for doing this is to train your lips to perform at a resistance much greater than you will feel when you do this with the horn. In so doing you will not only develop strength, but also the feeling of not having to push so hared once you remove that resistance (going back to the horn). This also trains you to RELAX once you are back to your horn with more muscle strength. RELAXING is just as important to prevent you from intuitively straining to put additional force you really don't need, and will only serve to close off your airflow.

So good luck and do keep us updated.

      @adc Ear wax? We're they used Q-tips? πŸ˜†

As a physician, I shall add our medical recommendation: Never, never use Q-tips to clean out ear wax. The physics of this only pushes the wax more into the ear drum. I know I am shooting myself in the foot, as people using Q-tips to clear wax brings many patients into my office, but don't put anything smaller then your elbow into your ear.

Q-tips for the mouthpiece that has too open ends, well that is a safe thing to try. I think adc could next recommend a wax that he prefers (please be it not ear wax!)

I use to remember members on TM talking about waxing horns with car wax. But I will yield to the experience of adc.

    • RE: Busy June and July

Very strange indeed as to the busyness. I started last week out with no gigs, ended with 4. This week I am subbing for a big band at a nursing home, tomorrow evening, playing a club this evening, and performing at the Dayton Jazz Festival on Sunday. The Sunday gig was the only one scheduled months in advance.

I have only one currently scheduled for July to date, but that is how June started with only one, and so far has 11 in it!

What is even more remarkable from the June gigs is that a well known drummer from Cincinnati (recorded albums with George Benson and a faculty at the UC College Conservator) that I have NEVER had the pleasure to play with in my 40+ years as an area jazz musician, suddenly had me playing 3 of those gigs with that drummer just this month. Getting in well with well know people in these situations, gets your name out there and opens even more opportunities that fills in those vacancies.

What are we tuned in to so far that would attract such an advertiser?

I don't know about others here on TB, but when I look at adds streaming, they came from searches I used on other sites to shop for house wear, cars, realtors, and dating sites. How the dating sites showed up, I am not sure, but none of the ads are for trumpet or even music related items.

The second trumpet part in the Canadian Brass arrangement of Bach's "Little Fugue in C Minor" has an eleven bar phrase of sixteenths at one point. I didn't write just "BB" on my part, but rather "BFB."

Or you could circular breathe. Why torture yourself? Live and breathe longer. Stay healthy!

...Perhaps Dr. GO would care to comment, considering the finish on his Ambassador.

Yes, I did have my Ambassador beaded and I will give you a before and after comparison of the sound. But I must first give a description as to the condition before and after beading of this horn as well, as the sound was definitely positively influenced after this modification.

My Ambassador was given as a "hand me down" to my brother in 1973 when I went off to college and he was 4 years behind me, beginning high school with marching band ahead. My brother was not kind to that horn, and when I got it back from him many decades latter around 2005, it was a mess. The bell was severely bent (and angled to the right), several tuning slides were dented in, but it was still playable but sounded "thin".

I decided to give Tom Green this horn as a challenge, mostly for repair, and also to attach a third valve ring. When he got the horn, he asked me about the finish and I saw his website and loved his gold beading work, so I requested the beaded finish. When I got the horn back, it was first of all stunningly beautiful, but its sound... its sound... It was a rebirth. Rich, dark and full. Now was it the beading? Was it the repair of the bell (bell taper is so important to a horn;s sound), or was it a new bracing attachment of the third valve ring? Not sure, but whatever it was that Tom did to this horn resulted in nothing less then a magical sound. So I am sold on gold beading, and Tom Green's repairs!

    • RE: Thyroid stuff

Sometimes the "thyroid" running low is just a numbers thing. The most important number is the TSH. If that is in the normal range and your T4 is a bit low, it's no big deal, it's just your body's way of saying it doesn't need a lot of the hormone for the cells to kick in at effective metabolism. In this case if you're feeling well, I would not take it further at this time.

If your TSH was normal, I would do nothing else other than follow it up in a couple years OR if you do experience symptoms of:

      Fatigue
      Depression
      Memory slowing
      Weight gain
      Thick, dough like skin
      Hair loss
      Low body temperature
Pulse is low - Slow heart beat
(for women, menstrual irregularity or infertility)

    • RE: Stroke

      NEXT LEVEL of PREVENTION:

First, I will post a disclaimer, what follows in this post is completely MY OWN medical opinion and practice as a physician, and is not discussed in any standard medical text or guidelines to POST stroke management.

The number one cause of death in a stroke patient is a myocardial infarction (MI). This face IS well established in the medical literature. So if the medical community is going out of their way (which the should) to prevent the possibility of the next stroke, I believe they should be going out of the way to prevent the most deadly outcome for the post-stroke patient.

So all of my patients that come to me after having a stroke get an order from me to go to the cardiovascular lab to have a cardiac stress test performed. If it is positive, it is time to address the management of coronary artery disease to prevent an impending heart attack, and this takes a completely separate range of management options.

      @amzi

I'm sure Kehaulani will respond once he sees this thread.

Agreed, as there is nothing like getting the advice of someone who has "been there".

However, as a physician, referral of patients to physical therapy is in my mind, as important a part of the immediate treatment plan as being placed on blood thinners and imaging the neck, cerebral vessels and getting an echocardiogram for ruling out a cardiac etiology to the stroke. I think getting back to playing as you are amzi is the best plan possible. This work and re-work of muscle and sensory nerves by repeat practice experience will help to recruit alternative neurons that well be able to reconnect muscle in a unique way to help support the "new" performance demand,

Of course the NEXT important part is preventing the possibility of the NEXT stroke and that will require medication that I will leave to the recommendation of your neurologist.
