      @Kehaulani

      We were incredibly lucky... "Jungle Village" near Vienna used to be "recreational area" where land owners were only allowed to put up bathing huts on their properties - nothing to live in permanently, just shelters for holidays. When my wife got hold of the property by guaranteed long lease, that ban was still in place, so we paid around €15k as main payment and have a guaranteed lease to pay of €800 per year. We intended to use the property more or less for one or two storage huts. But out of the blue, the local authorities decided that they needed space for permanent housing, and where better than in an area where all the infrastucture was already in place? So they lifted the ban, and within weeks of getting hold of that 99-year lease, we were allowed to build a permanent home there...

        This room DEFINITELY says TRUMPET PLAYER lives here. Trumpet on the floor next to the piano to transcribe those trumpet parts... And Miles on the wall... That says it all tj-Committee Club Member extraordinaire!

        Thanks Doc-my office usually has a lot more in it trumpet related, but if all you're going have is one horn, why not have it be a Committee?

          @barliman2001 I suppose it's heartening to know that North America is not the only place with bureaucracy! Thanks for sharing.

              @Kehaulani Normally we do too.....but our property has a view that cannot ever be taken away, which counts for something because we put up with a good amount of risk (we're in wildfire country) just for that view.

                Wow, those are definitely not homes paid for as musicians! We are fortunate that we’ve saved and planned well, and bought and sold houses at most of our duty stations. In our area south of Seattle that gets us a Nice 1980 ranch In an affordable price range. The same size 50s ranch in SoCal cost us about $50k less, and our 50s Cape Cod in Norfolk about $100k less. New homes in developments near us start at $500k, while similar homes in Woodinville near my work start at 1.1mil. Our house would be worth at least twice it’s current value if it were in that area with no other changes to house or lot! This isn’t the most affordable place to live, but it sure does feel like home. We could have bought a house with cash in my hometown area and still have had plenty of savings, but what an awful place for musicians to live! It’s all about happiness in the end.

                So what you're saying is "location matters?" = ) It's hard when natives see such drastic changes in their home town, city, or state. As a native Californian, going on my 54th year, the Bay Area (and the state) have changed drastically in my life. We're holding on as long as we can.

                    I empathise. When we bought our house in Hawai'i, it cost $17,000.00. When I visited the Islands recently, I visited that home and was told two similar houses on the same block sold recently for $90,000.00 and a cool million, respectively!

                      Geez!! My 1400sqft ranch is worth $350k now - give it a Seattle zip and it would go for around $700k. The most expensive home for sale in my hometown in ME is listed for $100k, and is overpriced in that area. It’s a 6 bed Victorian with an apartment over the carriage house and a guest cottage. We could buy that house and never have to work again, and be bored out of our minds for the rest of our lives. We’ll happily stick with what we’ve got!

                            I joined the Committee club during lockdown about a year back with this beauty. It was a roll-of-the-dice purchase. A couple of patches of missing lacquer made it look a bit suss. At the price - USD1600, I thought it might be worth throwing some money at it for repairs.
                            It arrived in its original case which is currently being restored. Turns out to be straight as a die, very little wear on the valves and fits me like a glove. It’s been my daily player since it arrived and has just come back from a chemical clean and valve alignment.
                            It was made in my year of birth which makes it even more special to me.86290673-2701-4D38-B3A6-E3DF5E272CD6.jpeg

                                First, welcome to the club. This is a deluxe. The feel so good don't they. I love mine like a crazy and it gets the nod for all my small combo work. The flexibility of moving through notes is unmatched by any other horn once the player knows how to control such flexibility. It is ALMOST the equivalent as the fretless bass of trumpets.

                                  • Martin Committee. Probably needs all of the felt, cork, and rubber bits replaced.
                                  • View from the 2,450 SF house. Too much space taken up with work-from-home offices to have a trumpet room.

                                    @administrator it’s a medium bore made in 1956. @Newell-Post the corks and felts are in good condition and appear to have been recently replaced. This was part of the pleasant surprise. I expected a horn of that age to be pretty worn or have come out of a closet with stuck slides, rotten corks etc. I’d even researched replacement lead pipes in case that was necessary, but the original is as clean as a whistle.
                                    @Dr-GO yes 100%. I particularly love the tonal range that it provides.
