      Thanks, Steve, that was so sweet. The future of music is in great hands.

      I believe Sean and Wynton are at odds though.

      I didn't ask him anything about Wynton, but we talked about Phil Smith and Chris Botti. He had some interesting things to say. He said that Phil's sound is the ideal sound he tries to get his students to mimic.

      Coincidentally, I also met Phil Smith that same day. He told me that playing under the baton of Georg Solti was the best "graduate program" anybody could have. Also, when I mentioned I was somewhat surprised that Chris Martin left the CSO, he said, "I'm not." I have no idea what that means.

      @Kehaulani That's more or less a new take on that old Nazi German joke... a guy goes to his town hall and tells the civil servant he wants to change his name. "Well, let's hear your name to see whether a change is permissible." - "Adolf Shittyfuck" - "Oh yes, I can understand you don't want that name changed. But our Führer has made such a change possible. What would you like your new name to be?" - "Albert Shittyfuck".

      Hmm. I first heard it in an Air Force band back in the 60s.

      I am actually very interested in that leather couch!

      It is very comfortable and has two lounge chairs built in. It is not vintage, but is well balanced. If you ever come to Florida, I will let you try it out. We can play trumpet duets utilizing both lounge chairs.

      @bobmiller1969
      The same invitation is open to you to try the Mt. Vernon Bach.

      I got to see him perform at a masterclass/trumpet day. Fantastic musician, he soloed in front of a big band and also played in a small combo that day. His EVI playing is something else. Seems like an extremely knowledgeable teacher too.

      Obviously, one can not quantify a mythos.

      Nor mastery, by the way, there is always something new to learn.

      Whether or not one can make a living on one's instrument deals a lot to do with a lot of factors.

      The mountain does not come to Mohammed. It depends on how flexible you are musically, how creative (and by that I mean adjusting to circumstances) you are, how wide a range of travel you want to put up with, what your income level vs. amount of work you want to commit to is.

      I made a full-time living for a good half a century, but I have to acknowledge that towards the end, I had to play a greater variety if music, travel got further and further away, musical techniques modernized (and by that I mean more incorporation of electronics, less reliance on groups of musicians). Income remained the same but it required a more resourceful approach. I call this last phase my "mosaic" period, where I had to do it all, simultaneously.

      Not judging, but for some the trade-off just isn't worth it.

      Thank you. As a stroke survivor several times over, regaining trumpet strength has been a major chore. Very discouraging. That vignette helps.

      When in Germany I had a colleague (trombone player, but smarter than most) who had taken part in a study about lung capacity among brass players. The finding was that brass players don't really have bigger lungs, but can easily control the exhalation.

      When I was in my hospital bed, I had my pocket trumpet with me. When I started circular breathing my pulse optometry increased by 6%! That positive end respiratory pressure really does open up more alveolar sacks.

      I enjoy it as I do most ethnic musics. (MOST music played at least in the USA is 'ethnic', as we're a nation of immigrants and descendants of an enslaved people, all of whom brought their cultures here and reshaped them into something unique).

      The 1st thing I noticed about Klezmer is the similarity to blues and early jazz forms in the pitch bends and even microtones that are mother's milk in the form. I'm no music historian---but could swear there's an African connection...

      Just for a word of clarification. He did not play with The Headquarters Air Force Band. He played with an Air Force band.

      @Kehaulani said in Mahler’s 5th:

      I was told long ago to always know the words to a song before you play it. It's simple. Know what the song is about.

      There's an often-repeated story about the great Ben Webster. On a gig, in the middle of a solo, he suddenly stopped playing altogether. Someone later asked him what happened. Webster said: "I forgot the words."

      ...What kind of mute were you using. It sounded somewhat metallic.

      It was on old 1960's vintage Harmon mute on my 1967 Olds Recording with a torn felt on the second valve (you can hear the clicks in the recording). Its fixed and refurbished now!

      I was a pretty active musician in the 50s and I recall her today because she was the first female trumpet player that I had heard of. They were rare, and after reading that NY Times article I can understand why.
      Thanks for that video. I had never heard her play and damn, she is good.

      Rest in peace, Clora.

      The top line F is sharp on my Bach 184 cornet. I always have to trigger the 1st valve slide a little to get it in tune. How sharp it is varies with the mouthpiece I'm using. The top line F on my Bach 43 trumpet is spot-on in tune, though.
