Which reminds me....Maynard had some kind of frankenhorn with both a slide and valves. Anybody remember what this thing was called?

It was a “FireBird”, Holton ST303. You can buy one from Gamin Brass on eBay for $14,000, or Berkley Winds, a Chinese brand, makes a facsimile that on eBay for $1250. A friend of mine has the Berkley model but pointed out to me that it’s trombone slide was also the tuning slide, therefore not very practical.

Happy Easter! I played a Good Friday service, a 3-hour rehearsal on Wednesday night, a Tenebrae service, and an Easter service. Around 10 orchestral pieces, about half of them with the choir, and uncounted hymns (luckily not playing on every verse). I’m worn out, and am taking a few days off without touching a mouthpiece to my lips.

Our orchestra played through Handel’s 'Worthy is the Lamb that was slain’ two times in a rehearsal Easter morning before the church service, and the third time, it was the last piece we played in the service. I played 1st part on my Bb trumpet. Brutal…

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I played the 1st Cornet part on Schuman’s ‘When Jesus Wept' at the Tenebrae service on Friday night. I rarely get to play cornet in our church orchestra, so it was a treat!!

Last week there was I really helpful exchange of views on the "Difference between Cornet and Trumpet" thread all of a sudden after over 2 years of silence. If that thread had been locked it would likely not have happened as it was resurrected by a new member who likely would not have jumped through the hoops to have it opened up.

Dr. Downing, 26th NC Regt. Band, sent me several of that group's recordings several years ago. I discovered "Butcher's and Drover's March" in a museum here in Arkansas and provided it to him. The band's arranger produced a band arrangement from the piano score and the 6th performed it. The march was from 1860's Philadelphia and composed by the first black band leader in the city. I believe his name was Johnson. I ran the Ark. 5th Regt. Band for a few years. We played in 4 states and performed for the national SCV convention. Never could afford replica instruments, but the Robb Stewart horns looked great.

@ROWUK Great to hear that you're back playing and getting decent results. FWIW, my dad who had stopped playing cornet after getting a full top denture was talked into playing euphonium when he starting transporting me to band practice way back when. He used a denture adhesive called Fast Teeth which seemed to work for him. He did use a lot of it. I remember him saying that if he didn't remove and clean the denture straight after rehearsal or a gig, it was a couple of days before he could remove it :-).

@J-Jericho said in DIY Practice mute out of PET Coke bottles:

@BigDub I'm guessing here, but is it because GG is more brittle and matches that particular characteristic of wood so there's less variation in drag on the cutting bit?

One thing I am sure of is that the seam is invisible and yes, no drag and the two pieces appear as one seamless piece. I usually wet one surface with water and put the glue on the other. This results in an incredibly strong, almost molecular(?) bond.
