    • RE: Stevie Wonder’s version of Spain

      Love Spain.

When I play this with the Ensemble, I play the Intro out front (can be found in the Real Book at the back section of extra songs)

As the only Solo Voice, I take it up an entire octave. There is a pause. Then the ensemble comes in at the A section. Very efffective!

...Amazing Grace is one of those songs that really demonstrates how music is the language of GOD.

I so agree. And going away from the hymnal, and into contemporary music, John Coltrane was well known for his re-connection to God in his album "Love Supreme"

However on "Crescent", he plays another tribute within his Spiritual Connection called "Wise One". This one really speaks to me:

I perform this song myself on Flugelhorn, at gigs where I am the only solo voice, and it is equally haunting and spiritually connecting with that voicing.

It is possible that your endurance increased because the Bach had worn valves and took more work.

A very good point. Before I started reading these trumpet blogs, I was very naive about horn subtleties. Before I went on a trumpet buying frenzy, I only had my Olds Recording. Played it for years, and it did take a lot of effort to blow but it didn't bother me. I decided to send it to Tom Green as the valves were clicking and the finish was wearing. He told me the compression was terrible and asked me if he also wanted me to do valve work along with the refurbish. I told him to do this and when the horn returned, my my did it play more accurate and required less effort to play.

Can't get more "off" than that...

Tis true. You know, I did not even know about this horn until I saw it advertised in the AFM trade journal as a good buy and investment in their items review section. the price was just around $300 and I was about to travel out of the country for a business trip to Saudi Arabia when at the time music was outlawed in public. So I didn't want to risk any of my other horns to be confiscated when I travel as I always bring a horn with me when I travel. So if Saudi Customs took the horn from me I would only be out $300 (actually got it for $275 on Musician's Friend).

As it turned out, customs did take it from me 3 times and each time I was able to convince a supervisor that it was for practice in my hotel only and showed them my Yamaha silence mute to demonstrate. Got it back each time.

Maybe it also helped that I showed them a picture of my two daughters and bartered if they gave me my horn back, the could have both daughters as their wives.

My Allora pocket trumpet is also amazing for the price. Very esthetic visual appeal and plays very sexy with a Harmon mute.

Agreed to above, when you have the right instrument that allows the player to perform instinctively, you can then concentrate on the music and the creativity flows like never before!

...I use the Schilke HC1 is because the bell flare and tapered leadpipe/tuning slide give it a nice buttery Committee like blow and feel but with better upper register and intonation.

This has been my experience with the Harrelson Summit with the 7 bell and 4 lead pipe.

      https://trumpetgear.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/summit-vs-committee_2.mp3

See the comparison I posted above. The Harrelson is just more easier to play and without the need to blow as hard for projection. [A harder blow on the Harrelson converts it more to a lead horn sound]. For this reason, I use my Committee for intimate small clubs in my quintet (or quartet when the sax is not on the gig) and the Harrelson for outside or large open venues like jazz festivals. Then the Harrelson takes priority for lead playing no matter what the venue because it is so clean and bright when putting more blow into the horn in the upper lead range register.

HOWEVER with that said, changing the blow dynamics on the Harrelson (Silver and Gold brushed finish) man does it ring like a classical horn when I play Christmas church ensembles. And the silver and gold really gets comment from the congregation after the performance.

    • RE: Does a large bore horn take more air?

Here as a large bore Harrelson Summit compared to a Martin Committee (not sure bore size used in this comparison) Hard to tell the difference.

      https://trumpetgear.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/summit-vs-committee_2.mp3

This has been my experience in playing my Summit. My large bore Harrelson so close to my Medium bore Committee and with the Harmon mute in... they are scary identical! The Harrelson plays SO MUCH easier than the Committee.... almost effortlessly, especially when going above the D above staff. And you can play so quietly to double high C with amazing control and little effort. While I can do a similar range with the Committee on my Kanstul G2 mouthpiece, it does take a lot more concentration to do the same work once above the D above staff.

My brain could not grasp that. It went above my head.

      Aleve is an NSAID - Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug. A little medical pun-humor.

I read about instrumental vibrato imitating the human voice, but who's to say that the voice used little or copious vibrato?

What the human voice does is often put into the context of modern reflection. But who is to say that vibrato is natural to the human voice?

Yes, vibrato is natural to the human voice.

Told yah TobyLou!!! If Rowuk says it, it must be so young Grasshopper.
