Where are all the other forum members and potential members? Too theoretical and pedantic for them?
Good point

This site looses credibility from it's first line:
Let's see. The site is an authentic Yamaha Corp. site and you're a hospital employee and in no way a trumpet technician, trumpet maker, or a trumpet clinician. I think I'll stick with what Yamaha has to say.
I'm done with this silliness.

When she plays the mouthpiece then pulls it away... she sounds the phwoooo... which is identical to the sound my embouchure produces.
There is no "P", "Ph", or PHWOOO sound when Tine Helseth starts or finishes with the mouthpiece buzzing (notice I said buzzing). Its a release of air just like anyone would release air. The video of Tine at 21:18 supports that and yes, I did listen carefully. Its just air.

I have another question, too. Where are all the other forum members and potential members? Too theoretical and pedantic for them?
Personally, I have been too busy playing to spend this much time talking about about playing. Sounds like maybe a few other folks could benefit with some time alone with a trumpet on their faces instead of arguing.

You don't "buzz your lips" while playing. Your lips flap in the breeze when you blow into the mouthpiece.

Let's see. The site is an authentic Yamaha Inc. site and you are who? Oh yeah, that's right, you're an employee at a hospital and in no way a trumpet technician, trumpet maker, or a trumpet clinician. I think I'll stick with what Yamaha has to say.

C-YaDr Mark PLEASE STOP the PERSONAL ATTACKS. Another administrator clean up on aisle 3.

Bob - honest question Nothing argumentative, but don't you describe lips flapping as the
result of an embouchure? -

Exactly! If I go fast enough down the Interstate and stick my head out the window, I can hit a double high C. It pisses off the Rottweiler but we've figured things out and now we take turns.

Attacks? Nope, everything I said is true. You are a hospital employee who argues with the Yamaha Corp about trumpets.
Time for me to practice. -

Ok, it's back. Now, let's all try to be friends! It's ok to post whatever your opinion is, let's just all try to be agreeable.

Thanks to the administrator for continuing this thread. It really does have educational value. Look forward to many others opinions toward the original Yamaha post and its instructional value as to the workings of the trumpet. Would like to hear Rowuk's opinion as well of the Yamaha perspective.

My opinion of the Yamaha article (for what it is worth) is it was written by the Marketing dept with only a hazy idea how the trumpet works. The second sentence "That said it is the mouthpiece that creates the sound", another half truth Further on it explains the playing of the harmonics by "blowing differently". The physics of creation of a sound in a tube has been known for 150 years yet is not understood by a lot of players and teachers and so the myths are promulgated,
-
My opinion is that the science is superficial and the history linked to it exceptionally sparse, but as a quick "what is a trumpet 101" set of linked pages, its excellent fluff.
We need fluff. Not everyone wants or needs to be a gearhead. Some just want a 4th grade book report level of understanding and this set of pages does that in a way that may actually recruit some more kids, or their parents, to the instrument. Wish it were better publicized.
I certainly liked it better than the You-Tube Xeno plant tour with Jens. That could scare parents away from ever letting their kids get near a trumpet - or more specifically the people who play them.

The trumpeter produces sound from the trumpet by buzzing his lips.
The statement isn't so wrong as it is sexist. It should be "the" lips, not his lips.
-
@Dr-Mark In fact the English language has a wonderful workaround for this: In order to be gender neutral it is permissible to use third person plural for third person singular.
Example:
The trumpeter produces sound from the trumpet by buzzing their lips.
Or even better:
Trumpeters produce sound from the trumpet by buzzing their lips.Notwithstanding the noted political incorrectness, the statement is factually wrong, an alternate truth if you will. Trumpeters produce sound from the trumpet by exciting the air column inside it. This excitation of the air column will not only vibrate or buzz a sheet of paper held loosely over the bell, it will also vibrate, or buzz, the lips. The lips are an intrinsic, essential, part of the system, not the creator.
