Buy a trumpet with a yellow brass bell, gold brass bells seems to sound nicer but they lack of projection.I don't know why you would say this. I'm not sure of this advice.
Well, I have that experience. I tried a good sounding Yamaha trumpet with gold brass bell in the symphony orchestra for a few rehearsals and I decided to sell that very horn after I swapped horns with the guy besides me who played a Yamaha with yellow brass bell. The yellow brass bell horn played way easier because she projects way better: The better you hear yourself in the section, the less energy you will waste

Just get whatever 500 eu will get you from Thomann. Pretty much every trumpet is going to sound the same unless you really know how to use them.
Cornets are not easier. They are for the most part the exact same instrument with the exact same skill set. For my playing cornet in a BBB setting, sitting in the 3rd solo spot was the most challenging playing Iβd ever done.
Get a basic standard/student model. It wonβt let you down. Some pro models take some real know how to play good -
Username, if you live in Germany, get in contact with me. I live near Frankfurt/Main and we could go through all of the motions BEFORE you decide in which direction to go. It makes no sense to "import" a trumpet if you are just getting started. Germany has enough instruments available with no customs issues.

UsernameHe's right about Germany. And he's a pro with a lot of teaching experience. For you, this is a big opportunity. I wouldn't let it slip through my fingers.

@Username Contact Shaun Hooke, Principal Trumpet at the RTΓ Concert Orchestra in Dublin. He is readily accessible on Facebook and is a B&S Approved Artist. He is a super guy and can direct you to the right addresses in Eire. Tell him I sent you (will send you the full name as PN) and he might even excel himself. All the best.
For advice and tuition, Shaun can either take you on himself, or you can ask Charles Cavanagh at the Garda Band (also on FB). My name should work with him as well.

@Gendreauj - hi - I had not thought too much about rotary trumpets - i can see online what the physical difference is, but can you say what the playing/result difference is?
My teachers, Tonestro and "Learn to Play the Trumpet" apps, are silent on the matter of which trumpet to buy. We are locked down till at least the end of August here.
-
@ROWUK Thanks very much for your offer - I am in Ireland though - but would still welcome any thoughts
-
@IrishTrumpeter You might invite Rowuk for a holiday stay in Ireland later in the year - he's a very friendly guy and possibly the most knowledgeable trumpet guy on TB ever, the God of the Circle of Breath.

In answering your question about the difference between piston and rotary trumpets, my answer is based on practicality. In Ireland the horns with pistons are the norm. IMO, in any place, whatever they use is what you want and the other styled horn would be for specific reasons and not for universal use. In the U.K. you want a piston-valved horn. If you eventually want to play in an amateur group, consider the following.
British styled brass bands are popular throughout the U.K. and Ireland and they use, primarily, cornets, although these bands may have small trumpet sections. If you are going to be playing in pop, or big bands, you want trumpet. Orchestras use trumpets predominantly. By that I mean symphony orchestras with strings.
But for your basic local amateur orchestra, I would just take a trip over to them and see what they are using, and ask the director if he has a preference.

Actually, Guiness is Dublin. Jameson is Cork...

Hi Irish trumpeter,
I have no idea how to answer your question about the difference between rotary vs piston trumpets. My experience has been with only piston trumpets. The answer to your question by Kehaulani was very informative, detailed and at a level I do understand. My experience is buying too many older used student, intermediate cornets
or trumpets, and questionable professional Chinese made cornets. Although now I am very happy with my Getzen professional cornet and professional trumpet.
I am a not a professional, or semi professional musician.
Found this forum is an excellent place to learn from players at all levels.I am locked down in Southeast Michigan.
Wish I was able to take a heritage tour of Ireland this year. Computers have made it easier to do genealogical research on my European ancestors. Now I know what town in the Kingdom, my great grandmother came from. So where do you live in Ireland?
Yes, my surname is French-Canadian not Irish.

Hi All
I thought i would come back to this post, to given an update and day thanks.
I keep practicing with my plastic trumpet up to the end of July and then was able to get a new trumpet from Thomann.de (As advised by some)
And now i have had it for a a couple of weeks it is a revelation - the SOUND is amazing (I have a small base for comparison) - I did indulge in a Denis Wick mute which make a difference as well.
I think i am actually starting to sound like its a trumpet.
Still working towards trying to get the late Mr Morricones song (minus an octave lower),
I have also started learning Fields of Athenry as well - mainly so its an antidote to Jerusalem at the next Ireland/England cricket match.. - i guess with the way of things that will be late 2021 if we are lucky.
moved away a bit from the online apps now - just using sheet music, which i find easier for some reason as well.

@IrishTrumpeter
Your trumpet looks like a Bach TR300H2 student horn. I used one to make my comeback with in 2016. Great horn but wanting a bit when playing the higher register. Perhaps Bach is connected with Thoman. -
@GeorgeB I know well the trumpet he bought, having been to the factory that made it. All Thomann horns are made in China. Some Bach horns are made in China. One Thomann model is made in the factory that makes Bach oem. I shall not disclose who and where, as I wish to avoid liability for libel or such. The horn pictured is decent for a student. I would not describe it as fantastic. It has resistance and intonation issues, and has a bright somewhat thin tone, and feels uncomfortable in my hands. Mechanically very good. A mature player will want something better. The Thomann price is many times more than factory. The Bach price even more times more. If the owner is happy with it, that's all that counts.
-
@grune
Yep, if the owner is happy, that is all that matters. -
Welcome to the world of brass trumpets.Glad you are happy with your student horn. A quality horn will not hold you back. What is your cleaning regime? How often do you oil the valves, grease the slides, wipe down, clean the trumpet? Have you been taking online lessons?
-
-
@Gendreauj - Thanks!!! Its brilliant to be here
Valves I do every time I play using Thomans own light valve oil (Recommended by Thomann)
Bought a load of cloths, so wipe downs on my stand and good clean about every couple of weeks - brushing out of water using baby shampoo, so its as gentle as possible on the lacquer and a very gentle dry rub afterIn my distant student days I work in a shop that predominately sold brass fixings - that was the advice to delicate stuff
No live online lessons (Just Tonestro) ... yet - i have been really lucky to have a local friend who has what looks like a studio in his house, great to be able to play with someone on the drums etc.
I do find getting the music on papaer helps so i have been typing it into MuseScore 3 - which allows you to hear the tune as well - so thats helping a lot with learning how to read and understand it
