RE: Bruno Tilz mouthpieces
Bruno Tilz makes a s..tload a mouthpieces, one type I know and that is the BaKo type: BaKo means Bach Kopie (copy), he makes CNC copies of Bach Mount Vernon mouthpieces.
Well, since the original Bach Mount Vernon, as well as the New York and Elkhart mouthpieces where not very consistent it's risky to just order them... You'll never know if you like them after playing them.
The build quality is very well, I ordered once a BaKo 3c and that one was way bigger than my Vincent Bach Corp. 3c, the BaKo feld more like a Vincent Bach Corp. 1 1/2c + the backbore was HUGE -
RE: B&S Trumpets
After reading so many hallelujah stories about B&S trumpets I had to give that brand a try.
Mod. 3137 Challenger I: Bach 180/37 copy. A well made horn, good valves but the sound didn't even come close to my old Elkhart Bach 180/37. Sold it to a German guy
Mod. MBX. 72-ish bell, ml. bore, l leadpipe and tuning slide. Good sounding horn but to me way too heavy. I traded this one in for a Yamaha 8130 Z. The latter was way easier to play for me
Mod. eXquisite Malcolm McNab. Copy of his old m-bore Vincent Bach Stradivarius. This one I ordered from Thomann; in 2009 they where the only shop who had them in stock. Beautiful made instrument but for me so hard to play that I was glad that I could return it. The m-bore Conn 22B 'Victor' turned out to be a way better match, that one I played for years until I exchanged her for a Getzen Eterna
At least I gave it a try but I.ll have to say that to me the B&S trumpets where one big disappointment

RE: Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker
I have been playing a Franz Straub for years. He builded (don't know if he is still in business) his trumpets around a Bauernfeind valve machine, as Hub Van Laar did and Miel Adams does. It was a very good instrument.
I sold the Franz Straub for a trumpet with a non 72-ish bellWillson makes his own valves as -I think- Spiri does, both Swiss musical instrument makers

RE: Does a large bore horn take more air?
@Kehaulani said in Does a large bore horn take more air?:
Then, why do some players "run out of air/gas" in large-bore horns quicker than in smaller-bore horns?
Now that is a very good question! Since my Getzen 900 LB took so many less air to fire up rather than the Getzen 900 Severinsen ML I had to sell the latter, same thing for my Bach 180/43* rather then the old Bach 180/37...
Both horns ML bore but the 180/43* sucked all the air out of meMy old Conn 'Victor' 22B (M bore) had the same feel like my Bach 180/37 ML bore
The Getzen Eterna 700S ML bore feels a lot tighter than my Conn 18B Director M boreBore size said nothing, there are simply too many parameters in trumpets to judge them on bore size only; you'll have to try them

RE: Best Valves
I like valves that never let me down. My Getzen horns never let me down but the new bought Straub with Baurnfeind and my 80's Bach did... That was The Horror
But actually, at least 60 second hand horns later, I never had valve issues with later horns like Conn 22B, Conn 22B USA, Julius Keilwerth, Selmer Radial, Selmer, Yamaha (even one with plate loss!), B&S, Antoine Courtois, Melody Maker, Martin Handmade, Jupiter, XO Brass, King, Schenkelaars, Olds, Buesscher, Holton and the ones I already forget had fine valves so what can I say?
I like the Yamaha valves and the valves of my later Bach trumpets where great as well; good compression even after 30 years of intensive use.
Since I like Getzen instruments I tend to have a favor for Getzen valves but actually I have to admit that there are many great valves out there

RE: Courtois Balanced Model...
Yes I sold my Courtois Balanced L-bore to Barliman2001 simply because he was in need and I have too many great horns.
The Courtois Balanced has a HUGE bore size, like .470 but she plays like a very good Bach ML with 37 bell. The sound of the Courtois Balanced -in my hands- leanend as well to the Bach 37 sound: nice, easy to color, very good projection and diction, in other words a real martial trumpet sound
I am very happy I could help Barliman to replace his worn out Courtois Balanced -

RE: The One
The 1991 Getzen Eterna 900 LB that crossed my path one year ago made me sell most of my other horns...
Oops! The 1980 Getzen Eterna 900 ML that crossed my path one month ago makes me think selling the LB one...

RE: Recommendations for used silverplated professional trumpet
Big chance that I cause a shitstorm but I have my doubts about the quality of the XO-brass valves; I sold my Bach 180-37 from 1978 to a conservatory student who weared out his XO-brass horn in just 4 year of intensive use.
The first thing he did when trying the Vincent Bach horn was checking the valves of it. He was shocked...The rest is history

RE: Conn 12b
I once had both a Conn 12b and e Conn 22b, pretty much the same instruments apart from the bell; the 12b has a copper bell rather than the yellow brass bell from the 22b
I prefereer the 22b: better projection so easier to play in company. Both are great horns. Oil the valves!

Buy a trumpet with a yellow brass bell, gold brass bells seems to sound nicer but they lack of projection.I don't know why you would say this. I'm not sure of this advice.
Well, I have that experience. I tried a good sounding Yamaha trumpet with gold brass bell in the symphony orchestra for a few rehearsals and I decided to sell that very horn after I swapped horns with the guy besides me who played a Yamaha with yellow brass bell. The yellow brass bell horn played way easier because she projects way better: The better you hear yourself in the section, the less energy you will waste
