FWIW, the virus lock-down hasn't affected my practicing at all. Other stuff, big time. But practicing and music-related activities. - no.

@Vulgano-Brother said in How do you feel about vibrato?:

@administrator I'm conscious of vibrato during rehearsals and practice, but in performance, I concentrate on the whole package, without focusing on the little parts.

Certainly. I would advocate a holistic awareness to our playing. Very few things can improve our playing more quickly.

      Moshe,

I am slowly dying of my Personality Trait (which is no longer a disorder since the publication of DSM-IV I am proud to say)

This Trait has helped me become a better trumpet player and has given me the desire to play even more. And blogs such as this further assists me as well in achieving that quest.

I imagine playing the piccolo trumpet and the digideroo each require a slightly different technique.

You are absolutely spot on! I tried to use my standard Bach 7C for both, but every time I inserted it in the Didgeridoo, it fell out the other end along with some termites. Maybe if I had a Mt. Vernon 7C it might have worked better. Perhaps tjcombo, or one of other Australian members could chime in and set me straight.

It is the C8 with the Z51 Performance package which is top of the line! To be expected from an Engineer employed as a consultant for Wright Patterson Airforce Base.

In Dr. Go's resurrection of this thread, I decided to go back and reread it and I discovered that I had played longer than I thought. That's not the important thing, but it reminded me of my first pay gig.

I was about 15 and it was at the Pearl Harbor Rec. Center. Played for a bunch of swabbies on the prowl. I wonder how many of you remember Combo Orcs books - intro, top, bottom, out. Great music. 😌

Got to watch the swabbies and the jarheads (sorry flugelgirl) fighting over their football game on the way home. As the saying goes, watched the fights and a football game broke out.

It's the difference between spelling words out phonetically and recognizing whole words as a single symbol, or even entire phrases. Eventually you start to think in those composite symbols, just like we all know what things like IIRC, LOL, IANAL, OMG etc. which is pretty much when you can apply the fakebooks effectively.

It was a coincidence or rather an observed correspondence or alignment.

Having said that I believe all things are connected in one way or another and these connections are not always obvious but it takes sometimes wisdom or clarity of thinking to understand and reveal the connection.

We all if we are lucky can contribute to the accumulated knowledge and reveal the synergies that surround us.

      Thank you for your contribution.

@ROWUK said in Fast Tempo and old farts:

@GeorgeB For things at the limit of what I can play (recently 1st trumpet in the orchestra version of Rimsky-Korsakovs Scheherezade), my standard take is to completely memorize the difficult licks. Once I have freed up my eyes, they do not slow my fingers or tongue down any more! 😉

This thing about memorizing difficult licks worked for me on Liberty Bell and now I am using it effectively for other pieces as well. Thanks for that tip, Rowuk.

The wah-wah and the growl are great fun but can sound horrible when done wrong. Walton's description of how to do it properly is pretty much how I was taught to do it by a pro player back in the early fifties. The growl, when done alone, can be a really nice touch to a particular piece of music, too.
Sounds like you are having fun. Good for you.
