Yeah, I said they should have the same insertion depth. Some of them don’t, for sure. I have a newer Wick that has a really shallow insertion, a much older Wick that inserts the “normal” amount, and all the Schilkes I’ve used insert too far. So that part of the equation is a variable for sure. That’s more a function of the mouthpiece design than the horn, though.

It's not hard to get valves positioned as close to the factory design as possible. A small mirror, a focused light source, and shims, whether purchased or improvised/hand-made, combined with an intelligent approach and some time, will yield good results. If someone has limited manual skills, of course paying someone else that does have the skills to succeed to do the job makes sense.

I can't imagine changing backbore is a "quick" solution to any problems. Every part of the mouthpiece affects the other parts of the mouthpiece. Like you said -- it's a system and it has to all be in harmony to truly work well.

I liken it to a bike fit. You can raise or lower your seat, but then you need to adjust the fore & aft position, as well as angle, otherwise the whole system becomes compromised. Not sure I totally agree with that statement about the mouthpiece giving Miles Davis his "dark" sound. I'm pretty sure that sound came from his head first & foremost, and then his trumpet secondary.

The "Made in Western-Germany" pieces, like Apollo, Lyle, etc? I read a reference that they were early Lausmann products [they started in 1945-6] but don't have access to it anymore

Thanks, my friend. That sounds like solid information. Playing relaxed is the key, for sure, but it helps to be reminded of that. Good breath support and posture make a big difference, too, as I’ve learned over the years.

@vulgano-brother me too, I have a megatone-looking 3c from an unknown Chinese mfgr, for about $7 new. For mine, compared to the genuine Bach 3C I have ca 1972, I would say the cup width is same, the bite sharper, and cup depth deeper. The sound is a tad darker and more brassy, and it is more difficult to play above the staff. The build quality is better; better silver plating. The B 3C gives a sweeter sound at pianissimo, much louder sound at forte, and is easier above the staff. For $7, price can't be beat. I bought it to experiment with the weight and sound. I do like the extra weight as a counter balance; the horn balances better in my hands.

@bobmiller1969 They are made from plastic, I believe 3D printed, They fit between the valve casing and can be moved up or down to find the best position that gives the best effect, I find that at the top just under the caps for me. Congrats! I know how good that feels because I recently did the same thing but in the opposite direction. I had an 1880's Courtois F trumpet mouthpiece but no trumpet.. but then a Courtois valved F trumpet from 1870 showed up on eBay and I now have the two together. This particular trumpet really needs the old mouthpiece, it can't be played in tune with a modern mouthpiece.

I know the Kanstul Company is no more. Least the last time I checked. The CG10- smallest size rim/CG Personnel V-Cup/ CG3 Cornet mouthpieces have very comfortable rims. Can be adapted with a Bach etc. Cornet M.P. to Trumpet adapter. Still be used in the Cornets. The CG Personnel Trumpet mouthpiece is the only one that has the same rim type as the Cornet CG Personnel. The Kanstul CG3 Trumpet M.P. has a different type rim than the Cornet CG3. There is another M.P. maker named Marcinkiewicz. That I believe still makes his version of the Claude Gordan mouthpieces in Trumpet/Cornet. From looking at his charts they appear to be all one rim size and on the larger size. Would have to call him for more specifics. This is late info. May later post on a new topic.

Hi, shifty, the 5X rim is similar to an ACB 5CS I had been using, only smaller so it is no problem. The rim offers the same support as the ACB 5CS and that is great.

I returned to band practice last night and played about 105 minutes straight. Lots of tough tunes with much above the staff playing as well. I hadn't been able to play that long in a year so the Denis Wick London 5X is sort of a miracle. And I do believe the shallow cup is also helping me get my range back as I played D above high C for the first time in a year. I used a Bach New York 10.5C gold rimmed mp between 1953 and 1965 so have a gold Wick is really nice. My lips don't slip on gold.

I had another rehearsal last night for a July 4 patriotic concert. About a 2 hour rehearsal, and I was a little spent by the end, having barely touched a horn for the last 14 months. I used my new Curry 3C on the old Bach 184 cornet again, and am really happy with its playability and my endurance on it. If I’d thought about it, I would have had Mark make me one years ago.

I received my Curry Conn Shank Cornet mouthpiece. My actual cornet is at Osmun Music having its valves rebuilt. I was able to insert the Curry Conn Shank Mouthpiece into the receiver of a bandmate’s King Silver Tone Cornet of the same era. It fit perfectly. The standard shank mouthpieces that were loose in my cornet were similarly loose in his cornet. I did also try a short shank Yamaha cornet mouthpiece as well, but it also fit loosely.
Because of the covid situation, I did not try to play his cornet with the Conn Shank Mouthpiece. It appears that the Conn Shank is the proper fit. I will report further about the playability with the Curry Conn Shank Mouthpiece when I get my cornet back in September.
