      Yes, I'm not talking about tone or balance, for example. I'm suggestion that more sophisticated technology can't improve precision.

      Amazing how fast things go sideways when a troll gets involved! I also agree it’s a valuable discussion and should be open again.

      @kehaulani I've had a few myself and while they played well, I lean toward a darker sound these days. In the past when I was doing quite a bit of lead playing the Z's were a better fit for me.

      @Jolter said in Is Thomann-USA American-based?:

      @grune You're right about the horns branded "Thomann". I agree the ones I've tried were not terrible.

      But more importantly, keep in mind this is Europe's largest music business we're talking about here. They have a very complete inventory of almost every imaginable (major) brand of instruments. So to say that their horns are made in China can come off as unnecessarily disparaging.

      Well, if you go in at the lower end of the price scale, the Thomann branded horns can be quite discouraging. I had one of their Black Jazz flugels, and test played an Eb Alto Horn and a Euph. All of them were more or less despicable, especially the valve sections.
      That said, Thomann list a great many wonderful instruments, and tons of accessories and stuff. Their own brand trumpet cases and gig bags are very good, and there's nowhere else where you can get some of the rarer accessories in quick time.

      @Kehaulani said in Does a large bore horn take more air?:

      So I'm a little confused.

      Could we summarize, then, in layman's terms, that the amount of air required doesn't necessarily depend upon what the bore size is but, rather, upon the collective design of the horn which includes a myriad of factors?

      In other words, do some horns take "more air", horn-by-horn, depending on how it's constructed rather than on bore size alone?

      Exactly this - horn by horn, depending on how it is constructed, how we hear ourselves, the efficiency of the entire body/mind/mouthpiece/trumpet/playing environment system. Even the term "amount of air" is not correct as our bodies have no measure of this except running out before a phrase is finished. We can believe that the horn is a loose blow indoors, we take it out to an open lake and the same system is like blowing into a brick wall!

      I play in a quintet. The other four members play in a wind ensemble in the mountains west of us.. the conductor wanted to have a doubt brass quintet for a big 4th event that included multiple groups. OK. I drove 60 minutes to play 20 minutes of sight reading pieces (although i rehearsed them in my studio). Tempos were rushed. Everyone wanted to leave - big crowd but late -- hour drive home. Good Faith and support. Otherwise -- meh.

      What I dislike about this stand is that it’s quite unstable with any less than 3 horns on it - especially on carpet. My quad K&M stays put on any surface even with only one peg attached, unless it’s knocked over by a drunk officer’s wife in an evening gown and rainbow clown wig.....that gig sucked!

      @Kehaulani Ok... see what you mean now. But the worst is on the valve body. Maybe a plastic valve guard and then a flip music marching band folder with a plastic outside pressed against it in a case? Or....not. 🕵 example.jpg

      @FranklinD said in Eugene Blee's Flexibility Exercises:

      ...do you really need written notes for this? Or do you have problems with the very unusual and adventurous harmonic progression?

      Only the first time you use them. Then they are fairly rote and committed to memory as they are maintained fingered patterns. No fancy change in harmonic progressions. They are what they are intended, just to get the blood flowing and muscular dexterity initiated to the lips.
