      Dr GO

I would teach medical students how to wash hands before they would go into the newborn nursery, telling them they needed to do at least a 20 second hand wash, and suggested they sing (to themselves) twinkle, twinkle, little star rather then do a boring 20 second time count.

One year a Russian immigrant was admitted to the Med school class and when I gave my hand washing discussion, she looked scared into my eyes and said, I do not know this twinkle, twinkle, little star. I told her, no worries, but just to hum the first 40 bars of Shostakovich Symphony No. 5. A look of relief passed over her face, and she turned to find a sink and washed perfectly!

@Kehaulani said in Graduate school continues - value of.:

I don't mean this in an uncharitable way at all, but I think you must have had a bad experience but I don't think it's universal. I've worked with all kinds of musicians and of all different kinds of backgrounds, some with little formal education to those with PhDs and I have never known one that didn't get something out of their education.

Now, some just got an opportunity to play in some great ensembles and make some valuable relationships, while there where others who really increased their knowledge. It was really personal, depending on their level when they started school and what their goals were.

One day during a composition lesson, I looked out the window and across the street at the main entrance to the building and said to my professor, "That's sad. There should be a sign over the entrance that says, "Caveat Emptor". He looked at me, took a pregnant pause, and said, "You have to create your own vacancy".

Just the opposite actually - I have been very fortunate. But like you, I am no kid. I see that the path that my grandfather faced only the challenges of working hard and being skilled enough along, which for me evolved over time into ever greater, though not insurmountable with the respect of peers, political/practical hurdles, is rapidly becoming a wall of unthinking check-box filtering. Its not like it was just ten years ago - in any field from engineering to fast-food. Everyone pre-screens today - even the educational side of the arts. The performance branches of the arts are the last bastion of true meritocracy perhaps , but sooner or later the wave breaks and covers all.

Also please do not interpret this as devaluing education in any way - professional or personal. I am, at the end of the day, a teacher and historian - I do appreciate the personal value of learning

I'm talking about something even more internal than that, but that's good point. The proverbial "Tyranny of the Barline".

As we know, phrasing is not so, necessarily, bound by barlines. In Jazz improvisation, one is freer from this rigidity but it applies to "classical" music, as well. A simple example (sorry, I don't know how to create and post my own graphics) is an eighth-note at the end of a bar. We can look at many note groupings and say, that's the end of the phrase, banging a metrical phrase interpreted as barline downbeats. But is it that, or a pick-up note into the next phrase?

Marcel Tabuteau was a master of phrasing and wrote, The Art of Phrasing which is brilliant. Any musician wanting to expand his/her phrasing possibilities and, hence, gain better, more sophisticated, musicianship should read it. This is a good time to do that.

A good alternative is Note Grouping by James Thurmond, which is based on the theories of Tabuteau and others but is expressed differently
      .
      Good point, Dr GO.

Does anybody know the price of a new BAC Benge?

I don't like BAC's hidden price policy where I have to give them a bunch of personal info that they can use to spam me with, before they give me the price. Thanks,

As an aside, has anyone played one of these?

I realize it's an old thread, but did you find the price of the BAC Benge?

      Thank you.

Well, one man's satire is another man's sarcasm - if it's that sophisticated.

A parallel point: one man's sarcasm is another man's ignorance... so don't drink the bleach... and it isn't that sophisticated.

I also remember an interview I heard of Jaco Pastorius that commented he remembered vividly listening to his Father's album of Charlie Parker playing Donna Lee. The speakers being very distorted he said sounded more like a bass lead than a sax lead. And as they say, the rest is history:

Thanks, Steve, that virtual exhibits link was interesting and entertaining. The thing I have always loved about Satchmo is that no matter where he is, on stage, in the movies, at home or wherever, he is just plain Satchmo, the man.
I am so glad I got to see him in Concert. He always made time for fans after the concert. This one was in Halifax sometime in the 60s and when I got to talk to him I told him he was one of the reasons I played the trumpet. He just laughed and said, "yeah, man, next time, bring your horn ". I will never forget that moment.
It was fun meeting Trummy Young, too, but all he wanted to know was where could he find a party to go to.

First discovered her on a tour of northern Denmark at a time of the year when the sun never sets. Laying on the bed back in my room at 2:00 in the morning after a night of playing and partying and walking through grassland to get back. Nothing like it. (What am I doing here?!)

Yes, on the Japan tour Chet played with a Dutch bass player and drummer cause he lived in Amsterdam then. They are great and very experienced players BTW. They had him on a complete methadon program that is quite standard in Holland but was less easy in Japan but they made it.

So sad he could not stay on that program. And today the success rate of Suboxone and counseling is over 80%! This is why I expanded my DEA license to include the Subpxone waver. So now I have the XO- notification in front of me DEA number.

@Kehaulani the cylindrical provides more resistance, and it was a bit too much for me. I like a horn to be a bit more free blowing, but not too much. This conical slide was a great balance for me compared to an elliptical.
