There is some confusing and incorrect information about various trumpet brands in this thread. BTW here are some photos on this page of an ascending valve trumpet I finished in my South Salem, NY workshop last week.

Ivan! OMG it is so good to have you with us! Please make the corrections as you are the ultimate authority (utimate in case you missed the TM spelling). I anxiously await your corrections, Grand Master!

    • RE: Play Through or Rest

What Grateful player describes is normal muscle physiology and trying to train muscle development. This needs to obey the rules of muscle development, through muscle physiology and biochemistry principles. I taught muscle physiology and biochemistry at a medical school for 27 years. I have been able to use this knowledge to apply it to a method of developing a safe and optimal trumpet embouchure, as is outlined below:

When control is lost and repetitively increases in intensity, it is time to put down the horn. Loss of control means fatigue has set into embouchure muscle. Initial fatigue is not damaging but is giving advanced warning that blood flow to muscle groups is compromised. At this point, lactic acid builds. If this continues without rest, the acid environment leads to muscle fiber strain. If this continues then the condition progresses to sprain. This then begins a process of remodeling (disrupting the initial efficient architecture of the motor units connection to on another). That process then progresses to negatively impact the embouchure from that point on disrupting the initial efficient natural architecture, irreversibly.

Carmine himself may be good for playing 40 minutes a day and that may be what he finds is needed to progress, but he is making this recommendation for an individual that has an embouchure that has matured and had the chance to develop and adapt to handle more stressful challenges.

My recommendation would be to start the series but as soon as control is lost to end the session. Note the time it had taken to get to that point. Keep practicing to that point for the next 2 weeks. Then in the 2 weeks that follow, try to increase the session by another 5 minutes. Then stay there again for another 2 weeks. Then add another 5 minutes and repeat the cycle. After a month or so, you can then meet the initial threshold of the 20-40 minute practice range.

You probably can but I don't think you will be able to get the trumpet's tuning slide much further than the first position.

Can't get more "off" than that...

Tis true. You know, I did not even know about this horn until I saw it advertised in the AFM trade journal as a good buy and investment in their items review section. the price was just around $300 and I was about to travel out of the country for a business trip to Saudi Arabia when at the time music was outlawed in public. So I didn't want to risk any of my other horns to be confiscated when I travel as I always bring a horn with me when I travel. So if Saudi Customs took the horn from me I would only be out $300 (actually got it for $275 on Musician's Friend).

As it turned out, customs did take it from me 3 times and each time I was able to convince a supervisor that it was for practice in my hotel only and showed them my Yamaha silence mute to demonstrate. Got it back each time.

Maybe it also helped that I showed them a picture of my two daughters and bartered if they gave me my horn back, the could have both daughters as their wives.

Hey, I just did three of those exams today! Pays good money. Perhaps I can send the proceeds to our administrator!

Once had a patient that asked me when I was doing the exam how much it was going to cost while I was grabbing his jewels. I told him $50. Then there was a long pause as I held them in my hands, and then I stated... and $100 do get them back!

      Are they married yet, Dad?

You interested? Both are available. I am their agent. Will make a trade for a good horn. Off brand of course as they are both a bit left of center.

Hmmm.... Perhaps should change my mind. Just played a gig last night and had several solos with the big band that really stood out. After the gig an audience member introduced himself to me... The principle trumpet in the Dayton Philharmonic orchestra. He was blown away by my sound and wanted to know what trumpet I was playing... Since it was with the big band it was a Harrelson night. He LOVED it. Wants me to come into the next Philharmonic concert (told him I already had a seat for the performance) and wanted me to bring in the Harrelson as he wants to have the rest of the trumpet section experience this horn...

Should I reconsider my number one? Nahhhh... Martin has been very good to me as well!

      Yes!
Buddy Rogers is a house hold name around here. Rented my first trumpet from there.
I play in band with some of there employees. And I’m pretty sure they’re a sponsor of not only ours but many local bands.

Got my college tuition paid for from a post I answered on Buddy Rodgers Community notice board to audition as the organist in a rock band to compete for a "Battle of the Bands" in Cheviot. We only had 7 days to rehearse before the competition. We played Blood Sweat & Tears, Chicago, Procol Harum, and Billy Preston tunes and won the night. That band stayed together albeit I switched out to playing trumpet and that band continued to gig 4 nights a week and paid my room and board, and college tuition. Would never have happened without Buddy Rodgers!

The smart way to safari is to go to a very user friendly music store with wide selection of mouthpieces, lock yourself away in a sound room, and then have your way with the variety of mouthpieces (brands as well as cup varieties) to increase your odds of walking out with a winner. That is how I found a couple of my current mouthpieces. Saves time, volumes and of course, money.

    • RE: Differences between grades of instruments

I agree entirely as to Rowuk comments. As his posts tend to do, it got me thinking as to my first horn, the Ambassador. All Rowuk said was entirely true in my early experience with that horn. It endured all the trauma I as an elementary student inflicted on it. And it was kind to me with the ease it provided me to play. I imagine that was the real value it provided, to afford me that opportunity to advance towards me becoming a more accomplished player.

But looking at that Ambassador now from this time in my life as a professional, man does that horn give an amazing flexibility in response! I just never had the chops as a beginner to appreciate that horn at that level. That horn in my hands out performs all of my Recordings and my Getzen Power bore in overall playability. Rowuk provided a most interesting introspective with his above post to allow me to make this personal connection.

On the old TM threads, some of the hottest debates were what gave it character and made it interesting... but it all somehow worked.

      Keep it going, boys.

Glad it's working for you as we have a lot of characters here... and I will admit to being one of them!

Ok, had a longish - four and a half hours - Big Band rehearsal (www.bbmf.de) yesterday evening. Had the Recording with me for the first time.
What an experience! A horn that can sing almost like a flugel....

I once was challenged by a piano player to sound more like a flugelhorn as I only had my trumpet with me at that time, my Olds Recording. I said, no problem listen, then relaxed my lower embouchure and got a nice flugelhorn sound. After he exclaimed with approval of how well that sounded. I then challenged him to make his piano sound like a Hammond B3!
