FINALLY... after more or less seven years of searching, I found one. A 1954 Olds Recording, in superb state; Votruba of Vienna, being rotary specialists, did not even know the collectability of this horn and let it go for a mere 800 Euros... with 99% original lacquer, no red rot, clean, nicely popping valves... a large bore with a rose brass bell... it went onto their website on a Friday afternoon, and I cut short a holiday in Italy to be in their shop on Saturday morning... happy!

Hmmm, I don't see it listed on your procurement list! Congratulations! I love both of mine, and LA and a Fullerton model and no difference in playability between these two vintages.

I recently bought an Olds Recording that was made right at the end of the Los Angeles period. It is in decent shape. The lacquer is about 90% and pretty dark with age. It plays almost as well as my Super Recording. These Olds Recordings from the early 1950's are real gems.

Good for you. Congratulations. Olds in good condition from the 50's are hard to find. I own 2 Selmers from the 50's, a Getzen, Conn trumpet and a Conn cornet, and a great 1941 Buescher, but sadly, no Olds Recorder. Anything I considered was just too chancy for the price they wanted.

Congratulations on your new horn! However, what is much more important to many of us is, how did you convince your wife to end your Italian vacation early, in order for you to purchase an old trumpet. How ever you did it must have been brilliant, especially since you lived to write about it!!! Or, did you have to dictate this post?

@tjveloce Just looked at yours. Nice, but mine is an even better bargain. Rose brass, and no wear signs whatsoever on the valves... comes from a collector who rarely played it... he preferred his Keilwerth Tone King (don't know why!). Previous owner now down with dementia, and his carers had to sell the collection to pay for the care home. The whole collection went to Votruba's who did a full service on every horn, but somehow did not recognize the Recording for what it was (Olds horns being very rare occurrences in Austria). I told them what kind of a gem they were selling - after I had paid their price and got the horn in my hands... btw, I did not pay their asking price of 1100 Euros, but exchanged an UMI Benge 7 for it...

Ok, had a longish - four and a half hours - Big Band rehearsal (www.bbmf.de) yesterday evening. Had the Recording with me for the first time.
What an experience! A horn that can sing almost like a flugel, whisper, and strip paint at the slightest provocation in that direction. Just what I wanted... only one horn has ever done that to me, and that was another Balanced model - a 1950s Courtois. But that one is in such bad shape, with silver plating almost completely gone, huge areas of red rot and the brass worn paper-thin in patches that Votruba did not want to try a restoration for fear of the horn crumbling in their hands... the Recording, being almost 70 years old now, is good for another 70.

I once was challenged by a piano player to sound more like a flugelhorn as I only had my trumpet with me at that time, my Olds Recording. I said, no problem listen, then relaxed my lower embouchure and got a nice flugelhorn sound. After he exclaimed with approval of how well that sounded. I then challenged him to make his piano sound like a Hammond B3!

I have that experience with my Harrelson Summit. It has a large bell so when playing with on open embouchure, a rich flugel like sound is generated. But add a focused blow directed right down into the throat it not only peals paint, but then reseals it into the next room!

@dr-go Interestingly enough, I somehow cannot connect with modern or new horns. I've played two Monettes, several Schilkes, tons of Bach and B&S, a couple of Yammies, three Yammies, two Inderbinens; at one time, I owned a full set of Stomvi Elites (Bb, C, Eb/D, Picc); I had Gerd Dowids of Munich build me a custom Bb, and I once had two brand-new Votrubas. ut all of these have gone on. What I kept, is in my list below...

@barliman2001. I also have a liking for the older horns, for Orchestra I us.e my Selmer Radials, Bb, C, D and Eb. For Bigband, Selmer B700L that my mother gave me for my 50th birthday in 1988. Another favorite is a Buffet Crampon Balanced made by Ernst Modl. I have not played many modern horns, I did like a Kuhnl and Hoyer, don't remember what model. My Favorite that eclipses all others is my Jerome Wiss 6/20, an absolute amazing horn that I have had for 12months. This is the last horn I will purchase. Regards, Stuart.

Me. too. I favor my older horns above the newer ones. I especially love the 1942 Buescher and the 1952 Selmer Paris.

And then again, there is nothing better than an older horn player... but on this account, I am biased!😁
