If I were not married, this would be such a cool gig. Could not even think what it would be like to be separated from my amazing wife for 6 months. In addition, I still have a steady day gig as a physician that plays pretty well.

Now if a cruse ship line would hire me as the ships doctor AND musician, that would be an amazing career. Just wonder if my State of Ohio medical license would let me prescribe those mood enhancing drugs that would alow the audience appreciate my performances even more LOL!

    • Lead Players Need Less Bathroom Breaks

Another observation I made during my 3 week ICU admission is that the nurse caring for me noted he did not have to change my bladder irrigation bags nearly as frequently during the times I was practicing my pocket trumpet in my ICU bed. So I decided to do an experiment. I followed the drip rate of the flow from my urethral catheter. If readers recall, in my other medical post I acknowledged that I had tubes coming out from all over me, and I was not kidding. Here is what I observed:

As long as I remained below the C on the staff, the urinary flow remained unchanged. However, as one proceeded from C to the F at the top of the staff, the urinary flow steadily dropped in rate. Once I played above the F (above the staff) ALL urinary flow stopped.

So, for lead players that have their parts that hang a good part of the time above staff, I imagine less bathroom breaks are needed.

Not a flugelhorn but Miles playing a Bucket mute.

Now you're getting it Mark. The strategic use of quotes is an example of passive-aggression. Just like you did in your initial post in this thread. 😉 😉

      Mike

THANK GOD Passive-aggressive disorder is no longer listed in DSM-5. Not a medical issue at all (at least not one physicians can bill for). My theory is all the psychiatrists sitting on the DSM-5 review board were Passive-aggressive, yes?

I'm sure Kehaulani will respond once he sees this thread.

Agreed, as there is nothing like getting the advice of someone who has "been there".

However, as a physician, referral of patients to physical therapy is in my mind, as important a part of the immediate treatment plan as being placed on blood thinners and imaging the neck, cerebral vessels and getting an echocardiogram for ruling out a cardiac etiology to the stroke. I think getting back to playing as you are amzi is the best plan possible. This work and re-work of muscle and sensory nerves by repeat practice experience will help to recruit alternative neurons that well be able to reconnect muscle in a unique way to help support the "new" performance demand,

Of course the NEXT important part is preventing the possibility of the NEXT stroke and that will require medication that I will leave to the recommendation of your neurologist.

    • RE: The Icon and the Upstart: On Miles Davis’s Legendary Feud With Wynton Marsalis

I had only one incident in my 50+ years where an individual showed up with horn in tow in the audience at an out of town gig we played monthly in Pittsburg at a club called as Little E's. I did not want it to be awkward, especially since my band played nearly all original tunes which would make it difficult for anyone to sit in. However, during one of the tunes, the band went off into an extensive improve, I took that opportunity to invited the individual to the take stage to play. It was a creative way to solve what could have been a difficult situation. My band was a bit miffed with me bringing him up, but the tension was relieved by my inviting him up.

At the time, I did not know that individual with the horn, but he would eventually be well know to me (and many others here on TB) as Dr. Mark. As some people here on TB may recall, that relationship went down into an aka Wynton/Miles downward spiral.

I don't know what this has with "Humor", but since we're on the subject of TSA - in my travels, I've been met with both horrible conditions and people, and easy ones. To me, it generally had to do with location. I.e., TSA in New York as abdominal and rude while TSA in Honolulu was fine.

I just don’t have the stomach for those abdominal TSA agents

As long as your stomach contents is under 3 oz, you're OK!

I see no need for 1. a worthless string, 2. humor, 3. artists on board, and at least a few more. Its a trumpet site so it needs to be about trumpets.

Worthless strings are in the mind of the reader. Some will find value to another persons perceived worthless encounter. To that individual, s/he can choose to just ignore that thread.

Humor... that helps us vent and adds some flavor to the discussion as well. A trumpet site needs to be addressing the needs of a trumpet player, and we as trumpet players do things the other 23 hours of the day when we are not practicing our trumpets. I find in interesting in the common threads of interests that trumpet players share. So I think this is the "sauce" that helps season the meat (trumpet).

Artists on Board... On TB this was started by a painter. It does seem to be heavily weighed toward one individual. I was the one who stated this parallel thread on TM. It was started not as a promotion, but as an acknowledgement of a painting I purchased from a prior trumpet player artist living in Florida that had a unique eye for painting the trumpet in a dynamic way. This thread then brought out a multitude of artists, as that was the point of my thread that was called "Artists among artists". It worked, as it brought out a lot of TM members passions in painting, photography, wood carvings. On TB, we just apparently do not have the same "volume" of trumpet players involved in other forms of art. Clearly we have one that is very involved and I still find it of value to see all the contributions that individual has made. With that said, it should not be a retail effort on the part of the artist, and I have not seen that to be the case. My challenge to everyone here: If you have other forms of art that you do (I know wood working is one of them as shown by several on this forum) then please contribute to that thread so it does not appear to be a one man show. As that artist originally titled the thread Artists (not Artist) on board. So Artists... Contribute.

    • RE: pet peeves

Not sure the "Pet Peeves" thread is to be solely related to language usage, but at this point would rather add to a Pet Peeve in the weather category: Mother Natures gift known as a Tornado.

I have been away for a couple of days as my "neighborhood" was hit my not one by two (2) EF3 tornadoes on the evening of Memorial Day. This EF3 came due East. Here is a picture of one of my neighbors homes that is just one block East and one block South of my home:
      8ce142c5-e92f-462e-9af6-fc3cc457e4f6-image.png

The second EF3 was originally heading North after crossing the Indiana state line for Troy OH, then suddenly dropped 20 miles South to miss my street by just a half mile. This second one came by just a couple minutes from the first one and nearly crossed paths about a mile away from where I live.

I was lucky as the tornado just miss my block (two rows of houses where is touched down). So my home has no damage what-so-ever and not even a limb blown off from my trees. I believe my house was so close we may have been in a vacuum just external to the twister. They say a tornado coming through was like hearing a freight train. I heard NOTHING. I mean PURE SILENCE (not even wind blowing or rain falling) that is how freaky this experience has been. So today, we just got electricity back on, and my phone and internet service just kicked in about an hour ago.

Stay safe out there during these Midwest Hot and Humid days of "Summer", and if you hear Tornado warnings do get to the center of the lowest level of your home. This is what I did and by the grace of God, was spared.

    • RE: Pneumonia - how long to pause?

A few thoughts. The pleural effusion may still be present. It can take 3 to 6 months for this to resolve. The fluid will restrict lung volume with can make you feel short of breath. Alternatively it also takes 3 months for the airway inflammation to resolve. Bronchodilators really do not help much in either case.

I would recommend using the incentive spirometor that was introduced in a recent post. Also a 3 month course of an inhaled steroid may benefit. Also when sleeping at night, having a cool mist vaporizer may benefit in residual secretion clearance. We should never underestimate the healing power of water.

Getting a follow up chest x-ray in 4 to 6 weeks is advised.

Not sure if you had received the pneumovax series, but if not, I would advise getting this done to help prevent a future pneumonia.

Hope this advice helps 🙏. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Ref. the forum getting cluttered. So - how many people actually frequent TrumpetBoards?

I saw an internet survey that TrumpetBoards is rated the number 1 in quality over all other trumpet forums today (post TM era), with TH listed as number 2. It does not rate frequency, but quality. In my mind, quality wins.
