Glad to hear @Dr-GO (Gary) is getting gigs. What type of gig was it? And did you have to make any "social distancing" adjustments?

      Mike

The AFM local 101-471 got me a gig to open a church for their Pentecost services. It was held with amazing social distancing, with families sitting in single pews staggered one end to middle to other end of pew, ALL I mean 100% wearing masks! I played at 12 ft from the organist (having to remove my mask when playing) but kept it on at all other time. No hymnals. All responses AND hymns were projected on a large screen so that no paper service items would be distributed.

Currently, I'm the only moderator and I don't read enough posts to catch much of anything.

That was my problem trying to edit gmonady's posts on you know, TM. He had over 18,000. Whew. Too much for one person!

BUT that is why I paid you the BIG Dub-Bucks!

Dr GO. I assume you took no women.

No. We did not take women. We did have dinner back at the hotel one night with a women that traveled from North Carolina, that was also at the medical school working as a consultant for their pharmacy. She was in tears as she was just released by the "religious police" after she was held for questioning for walking alone (without escort) along a street, and evidently was also not wearing her head dress to specifications. She was so broken by this questioning.

Also, I had to get special clearance from the government to interact with women students at the medical school. I went up to the woman's building (they are taught at a separate place from the men) to meet with the faculty, and the group of men I was with were frantically calling at me saying: "Dr Gary, Dr. Gary, get away from the entrance and come wait with us or you will loose your parts". Evidently, the protocol is I had to be be met off their entry and escorted into the building after being acknowledged.

Very strange place Saudi Arabia is. I did come back with all my parts intact. Really do not want to go back there again. Only good thing about the trip is I love the Pocket Trumpet I purchased to take with me.

And see... This is what I mean... We are back in the saddle again in Ohio. Just called by the drummer to play with what was originally billed as a trio. So the gigs are spilling in for June:

No spam, so far. Please report any that you find. Currently, I have registration pretty liberal. I am trying to attract new members.

This is an amazing site, and your are doing a great job.

However, I believe I have your posted evidence that I would be Moderator of Medical Concerns; however, since no members have yet posted medical concerns (just my reports from medical studies) SINCE WE ARE ALL IN SUCH GOOD HEALTH, I guess there is nothing to moderate. But when that time does come, I hope I am worthy of anointment or Great One!

Actually, there have been too many of the good ones leaving us recently. Wallace Roney, Claudio Roditi included.

Well the second wave of Covid has shut the band down again and it looks like it will be a long one, so I will be stepping up my practice sessions to keep myself in band shape for whatever time is necessary.

So I thought Canada was getting the curve under control. So sorry to hear this. I did a gig the weekend before Thanksgiving and was told it would be safe... No dancing. All wearing masks. Band would to isolated to a separate area spaced away from the main building... ALL LIES. Band was only 20 ft from crowd, crowd generally was NOT wearing masks, and a good number WERE dancing. A super spreader event to be sure. Was it worth the $150 I was paid. Hell no! But I believed the person hiring me. NEVER AGAIN. I am turning down private gigs for now. Only doing the Church performances I have been contracted to play for now.

    • RE: A little humour

I know this is a humor thread, but the latest discussions has been the "humor" around wages in the 1970's. I would add to this discussion a rather "humorous" twist to wage comparisons to today being so low in relation to today's wages. During the 1970's, I had experienced the opposite effect.

From 1974 to 1977, I played in a very successful rock band. We played as a house band 4 nights a week and were able to typically book a 5th day of the weekend at other venues. Our manager made sure all venues (including the house band gig) paid us $100 a man... Yes, in the mid 1970's! So as a college student I was bringing in $400-500 a week at a time when my tuition was $300 a quarter, and room rent was $86 a month. Needless to say, I needed no parental financial support, was able to buy my own car, pay for my own food (I did go home on weekends to do laundry at Mom's house), and save money in my first personal bank account.

Today, I have to really fight when on my own to get a gig that pays me a $100 performance fee. Fortunately, when I get a Union gig, I will receive more then the acceptable $100 minimum. So not much has changed from club's willingness to pay musicians from 1970 to 2020 dollars. Actually, there is really not much humor in this comparison, but it is laughable!

    • RE: Not really a "mouthpiece safari" but the need for a "saving grace" type of mouthpiece...

What is missing from this list is the 5mm design by Harrelson, It will be more expensive than the comparisons on the list you have posted, but the investment is worth it. I have used a Jettone Studio B for years on my lead horns (prior to Harrelson the Getzen Superbore). With all horns and the standard Jettone, it performed well for awhile, only to lead to me bottoming out as demand increased (usually after the first 2 hours of play).

Harrelson copied the Jettone rim and cup for me, but their 5mm system allowed me to substitute a wider throat. That made all the difference in the world. So the resistance with a small and shallow rim was removed by using a wider throat. I might suggest that system for your assistance in supporting your unique embouchure.

    • RE: Busy June and July

Very strange indeed as to the busyness. I started last week out with no gigs, ended with 4. This week I am subbing for a big band at a nursing home, tomorrow evening, playing a club this evening, and performing at the Dayton Jazz Festival on Sunday. The Sunday gig was the only one scheduled months in advance.

I have only one currently scheduled for July to date, but that is how June started with only one, and so far has 11 in it!

What is even more remarkable from the June gigs is that a well known drummer from Cincinnati (recorded albums with George Benson and a faculty at the UC College Conservator) that I have NEVER had the pleasure to play with in my 40+ years as an area jazz musician, suddenly had me playing 3 of those gigs with that drummer just this month. Getting in well with well know people in these situations, gets your name out there and opens even more opportunities that fills in those vacancies.

modern, well-heated church, playing in the organ loft (civvies permitted)... so all the plans of spending Christmas Day with my mother-in-law went overboard - no turkey for me!
