Trumpet slide grease
-
Hi all,
I have a mint 1946 Besson Meha that I haven't played in ten years. I will be selling it soon and the slides need cleaning and lubing. I have some trombone slide grease (Trombotine and Superslick). Can they be used?
Thanks, henrylr -
You probably can but I don't think you will be able to get the trumpet's tuning slide much further than the first position.

@dr-go Thanks for the reply but I don't understand how a trombone slide grease vs trumpet can limit slide movement.

Why not use regular slide grease designed for tuning and valve slides? It's affordable and appropriate. Check with Dillon Music https://www.dillonmusic.com/ , for example. Sure, you can use trombone slide grease, petroleum jelly, wheel bearing grease, lanolin, lard... whatever, but using the best product designed for its specific use will provide the best results, and without negative effects.

@henrylr That was a joke... "first position" is a trombone slide position, the shortest you can extend a trom slide. Usually about one inch. If you extend a trumpet slide any further, it will fall out.

@henrylr Trombone slide grease is designed for fast action. Trumpet slide grease is not as fast, lasts a lot longer and also helps the slides be more "airtight".
Tuning slide grease would be the same for both instruments. -
I use valve oil for the valves.
Slide oil (or valve oil) for the first and third valve slides.
Slide grease for the middle-valve slide and tuning slide. Some people use the same slide grease on all three valve slides.

@henrylr I understand that you're going to sell this trumpet and want to know if what you have on hand will suffice, as opposed to having to buy an additional product. Considering the condition of the horn, wouldn't it be best to sell it with the proper lubricants? Never mind that the new owner may decide to clean it out and redo all the lubricants, and never mind that buying the right slide grease will diminish your return on the price by about ten dollars; it's just good practice to sell any merchandise without undisclosed issues or cutting corners. Besides, you'll have the slide grease to use on other instruments.
