I'm 80 years old and have been away from the trumpet for the past 20 years but started up again last month.

Recently acquired this horn. It may be a cornet because the lead pipe is smaller in diameter and only takes cornet mouth pieces.

It is in pristine condition and sounds like a trumpet. Horn is silver plated and only has one water valve. You can also see the slight Sheperd's Crook.

This horn is only 18" long but is only as tall as a trumpet. It does play well.

The mouth piece is engraved, "Conn Model". No number, just those words. However, I am currently using a Harry Glantz mouth piece which seems to be working the best for me.

Any info will be very much appreciated.

      Thanks very much.

Note how the third valve appears to have two slides coming off of it? That is why the horn looks short.

With no valves depressed, the air probably goes through the slide with the water key, but not the other slide. (The slide with the water key is probably the main tuning slide.) With the third valve depressed, the air probably loops through both slides.

I'm not a Conn person, but it seems like Conn experimented with some strange valve slide configurations like that. It might be a "house brand" Conn of some kind, but I will defer to the Conn experts present.

@newell-post Sorry. Correct that. If you look closely, the main slide just loops around without entering the third valve.

Wallace Music store is just that - a music store that had instruments made with their logo.

This horn is definitely in fantastic condition. It appears that it was never used or possibly, used very little. In fact, there isn't even any leakage in the valves.

I did have to polish the silver when I first got it due to some tarnishing but very little. Apparently, it was kept in a case most of its life.

The case, as you can see in my first posts is definitely not the original. It is much too large so possibly it's for a full-sized trumpet.

I am currently rebuilding the inside of it so that it will fit this Wallace horn. Hoping to finish it today and will post a pic when completed.

Thanks very much for the information. My horn may even date back to the 30s.

I have been searching for this information quite regularly over the past year or so. You did very well.

Now let's just hope I don't get arrested for having it in my possession. :):)

@rowuk I was wondering if it might be a Buescher. It would make sense for a Chicago music store to get their "house brand" inventory from a maker nearby, like Buescher.

I haven't been able to find any photos of Buescher horns with those proportions and that wrap near the third valve. However, Olds did wraps somewhat like that on a few models. But the wrap gives it an elegant appearance: longer than most cornets and shorter than most trumpets, but nicely proportioned.

@newell-post Buescher did make some oddly-wrapped cornets in the 1920s and 30s, sometimes under their student brand "Elkhart by Buescher"... like this one that I am currently selling through Votruba's shop in Vienna... elkhart-kornett.jpg
This one dates back to 1927.

@davidpaul It's just an instrument that really asks to be played yet isn't... due to the fact that it's only one cornet in a biggish herd (two Besson Internationals, one Besson Imperial, one Courtois, one Buescher Aristocrat...), if you want it, I can easily reclaim it from Votrubas, and we can do the deal... asking € 450 including international insured shipping. Votruba freshly serviced the horn, so it's ready to go. Or you can go directly to Votruba's website, and do the deal with them https://www.votruba-musik.at/musikinstrumente/gebrauchte-instrumente/trompeten-fluegelhoerner

Unfortunately, $500+ USD isn't in my budget right now but if it was, you would definitely have my attention.

Besides, I am just now getting back to playing after a long hiatus and need to see how I progress.

At my age, it's really hard work but quite enjoyable at the same time. 🙂

Sorry to regurgitate an old post but I may have found some info regarding my "Wallace House of Music, Chicago" cornet.

This cornet may have been made by company by the name of William Frank Company in Chicago. Apparently, they made some horns for Lyon and Healy. Both organizations are defunct and have been for a very, very long time. This information came to be via a gentleman from Horn-u-Copia.

I also have pictures of some of these old horns. Other than being in less than pristine condition, they are identical to the Wallace cornet in my possession.
