I bought it. Man, it's been a long time. 5+ years. Will post photos soon. It's gorgeous.

@Mike-Ansberry Can we continue to say that that American Standard horn was a really $hitty instrument? (sorry for the bad pun).

Thanks! The oval ports allow the rotors to be a smaller diameter, which makes the valve action very fast. As far as I know, only a few makers used them in the 19th century, and they were found only on their top model instruments.

      vintage
      noun
      1: a season's yield of wine from a vineyard
      2: the oldness of wines

each year is a vintage. how is this related to trumpets?

      You left one out...

      3 a : a period of origin or manufacture : a piano of 1845 vintage
      __b : length of existence : AGE

so which year is a Bach vintage?

Well, that’s the question, isn’t it? Personally, I’d say around 50 years old, but that’s probably a bit older than some would say. My oldest one was made in 1976, so it’s not there yet.

Incredible it survived, it was found intact, and could be played. I have my doubts though we are hearing the original tone. After 18.000 years, the shell will have ossified and thus will not vibrate the same. And how do we know this is 18,000 years old and someone actually blew it? Regardless, an incredible find.

Just bought a 1964 Eterna serial number SK793. The S indicates Severinsen but the bell only says Eterna By Getzen
The bore at the second valve tube measures .450 with a caliper. I thought these were .460's?

I think they're quite attractive. I would like to have one.

This one is available for purchase. It’s in the San Francisco Bay Area (Santa Cruz) and I’m going to help the owner find a suitable home for it. I went and saw the horn in person today, played it a little, and got the history. I’ll post the report shortly. In the mean time, if you’re interested, contact me privately.

I have no interest in the horn nor a financial stake in it. I can only say that despite not knowing much about cornets or this particular model, it is in the parlance of the vintage car world, a “Barn Find.”

Do you still have the JetTone Custom 1A? If so, would you like to sell it? I've been looking for one for awhile now.

Try Legends, too. They do excellent reproduction work.

Very interesting! Those brought to mind this video of Egyptian trumpets being played. Authentic, slightly haunting sound - nothing like those old Hollywood movies. ☺

You always have to bear in mind that the sound of the Egyptian instrument is the sound of an actual ancient piece, whereas all the others are more or less exact modern copies (as far as I know, these reproductions took no notice of the exact metallurgy of the originals, but just followed the shape).

Thanks for the link, Shifty. Problem solved, sort of. The serial number is on the inside of the valve, where the springs are. More info is available at: https://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=158920&highlight=

Great, Doc. All that was good to know. I had a chance to buy a Super but felt it was overpriced and chose the Recording instead. Absolutely no regrets. Somedays I have a hard time putting the Recording away for the day. I just want to keep on playing.

I have some great horns in my collection but the Olds Recording is the only one I have a hard time putting down for the day. I just want to go on playing it forever.
