Love fishing. Prefer wading mountain streams with ultra light gear. White Miller maybe the best lure I've ever used. It catches everything. Nothing like landing a 3 pound trout or large mouth bass in clear mountain water only 2-3 ft deep! I did catch a 5 pound Largemouth in a muddy pond whose eye was bigger than the spoon on the lure!! Will try to find the pic on my phone and post later.

I understand completely the thrill and challenge of ultra light gear, which uses 2-6 lb test line. Everything is relative though. The tarpon above weighing around 150 lbs was caught and landed on 20 lb test ( the heavy line in the photo is the leader). It dragged us over the flats (2-3 feet deep), into the channels ( 10-15) feet deep, tried to drag us under a bridge, and the fight lasted about an hour before we could get the fish to the side of the boat for a release. I’ve been in sailfish and marlin tournaments where we were given 17 lb test line that was required to be used, and released fish at the side of the boat. I’ve also caught pacific sailfish on fly rod with 16-20 lb tippets. Everything is relative. For example the tarpon above would be the equivalent of catching a 15 pound fish on 2 lb test given equal environmental issues.

Oh, I'm not against deep sea fishing, I'm just cheap! 😉

At 4:38 you can see the slide area and that is a Committee spit valve. There also is no tuning brace. At 6:46 you get a quick glimpse of the 3rd slide and it does look like a Committee spit valve. I'm saying "Yes" it's a Committee.

@flugelgirl "if pistons are tight" reminds me of one of my trumpet buys. I paid a little over $400 for an Olds Super from photos and a seller that proclaimed total ignorance of condition. When I got it the finish was good. No major dings. All the slides were moving. It came with the original case that was mostly functional although bunged up. The valves moved up and down like a champ. I thought I had found a treasure. Only..... the valves had so much wear the only way you could play the thing was with super dose of valve oil that would fill in the gaps...for a while. When the oil would hit low tide the note range would contract considerably on both ends of the scale. olds.jpg

Did you modify that stand? I just picked up a similar one.

Slave labor is not am emotion word. It is what it describes. I don't want to go into the politics of China, I linked an article for that and the reader can draw their own conclusion. No US company can pay those wages in the US. No one will work for that. The cost of living in China hard to determine since the gov't there does not readily share reliable information. Heck, the article I linked could be wrong and they make less. When it is cheaper to make something in another country and it can be shipped to the US and still be cheaper, it puts American workers out of a job. The OP's Strad is obviously reverse engineered. This would have been a joke 10 years ago but the Chinese have progressed and can now make "quality" Strads. Could they put Conn-Selmer out of business? Sure they could because the playing field isn't level.

@Niner That looks like a wonderful day, grilling with family.

Just an aside, I recently bought an "Inkbird IBT-4XS" grilling thermometer off of Amazon which has solved any overcook/undercook issues I may have had. Monitors up to 4 meats simultaneously and can link to a smart phone...........I'm not a paid endorser, I just think it was a really cool purchase for someone who likes to grill......✌

I just cook until the smoke alarm goes off or someone calls the fire department. I don't get asked to cook often.

I can't remember the movie but it was Sandra Bullock and she was working in a "Starving Artist" paint shop. She pressed buttons and a sponge would make a mountain ridge, another one would paint birds. It was a funny scene. Anyone remember the movie?

@Tobylou8 that same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. Best cleaning job I ever did and it was clearly noticeable to me. I am happy for you.

Thank you kind sir! I should have suspected something was amiss when high C's became erratic, and we had a lot of them this program. I had been very busy and figured I wasn't practicing enough, even though my routine was the same. It's been one of those springs when everything ran together. Maybe it was left over granola bar?? Anyhow, long, long brushes from Harbor Freight saved my keister!!!

But therein lies the rub. I would rather learn learn teach. I enjoyed posts by those who had experience beyond mine from which I could learn or contribute.

Being the real deal has it's drawbacks in this regard. I can only offer anecdotal information based on my limited experience. Bore size has already been mentioned as being only one of many factors in how a horn sounds and can be "irrelevant". I can attest to that with the horns I own. My .460 bore Olds Pinto has a flow through valve configuration and it takes adjustment to not wear oneself out quickly. A .468 Super Artist is not nearly so tiring to play and is more like a medium bore. Would a flow through design on a smaller bore, .450, be more efficient and achieve the same results as a bigger horn?

Those are "slave labor" wages only when compared to ours. How do they compare to their own cost of living?

That's not the relevant point. Kanstul, for example, couldn't compete with the "slave" labor force of Chinese manufacturers, if indeed that is what pushed them over the edge. No one in this country can live off > $10,500 annual income. I've spent that much a year alone in fuel costs for my equipment. No US manufacturer can get away with paying any employee this paltry sum. This is an interesting read about how China gets away with low, low prices. It is 3 years old so some things are beginning to change for the better.

I just got in from playing. It was a good concert in the rain, we where protected. It went better than I thought it would just a few days ago. I had been struggling recently and it made NO sense, I knew all the music, done it for years. Everything just felt too tight. So I was concerned. I thought, "Well my horn will be shiny and clean". WOW, just WOW. I got so much junk out, really "chunkage"! I can't explain why or how it got so chunky but it did. It was like playing a new horn. 1812 went very well and the howitzers and Carillon just made it a great concert for those that had braved the thunderstorms that had and still are in the area. Earlier, did a pool party and picnic with the family. Twas a great Independence Day celebration!!

    • RE: Is a $280 New Bach Stradivarius Trumpet too good to be true?

The average Chinese worker in manufacturing made > $10,500 in 2018. In 2010 it was>$4500. That is what manufacturers have to deal with when they pay employees a decent living wage. If the Chinese work a 40 hr. week, in 2010 that was >$2.35 an hour. In 2018, that's up to about >$5.25 an hour. China uses cheap, dare I sat "slave" labor working in real sweatshops to make these reverse engineered horns. It's not just horns too. It's hard to compete when the most expensive part of a product is labor. If China reverse engineers a Monette, you might be able to get one for > $1000! Here's to unfair trade and labor practices!

      @adc Ear wax? We're they used Q-tips? 😆

As a physician, I shall add our medical recommendation: Never, never use Q-tips to clean out ear wax. The physics of this only pushes the wax more into the ear drum. I know I am shooting myself in the foot, as people using Q-tips to clear wax brings many patients into my office, but don't put anything smaller then your elbow into your ear.

Q-tips for the mouthpiece that has too open ends, well that is a safe thing to try. I think adc could next recommend a wax that he prefers (please be it not ear wax!)

I use to remember members on TM talking about waxing horns with car wax. But I will yield to the experience of adc.

The good old bobby pin get it done. 😁
