TNG dealt two fatal blows to my willingness to suspend my disbelief.

The first was when they find a copy of Scotty stuck in the memory banks of an abandoned hulk ship.

The second was the flashback to Piccard getting stabbed in the heart as a young man.

Don't forget William Riker and his "brother" Thomas. ๐Ÿ˜‰

But it's more interesting to bring people back by shifting time. They brought back Tash Yar 3 times ... and managed to kill her off all 3 times.

Niner, your thought about letting next of kin figure out what to do with oneโ€™s stuff after death is something I frequently consider.

My jazz trio was hired to play a "life celebration" for a local trumpet player who passed away. Among his horns was his treasured CG Benge Trumpet. That trumpet never left his side. Towards the end of life, when he needed surgery, the horn when with him into the OR. The family mentioned it was being buried with him. Since that gig, my wife jokes that I'm taking my horns with me.

Well, surprise, surprise. I got a Schilke B-1 and have had it for a couple of weeks. It's become my go-to horn. I got the Yamaha Shew for its agility and because it's the lightest horn I've ever had and I'm not the strongest guy on the block, (strokes) but I've never been content with the Shew's sound. But the Schilkeis light enough and the sound is more substantial.

      Congratulations!!

The B1 is my favorite Schilke.

@moshe said in no prayer requests allowed:

The heading for the Lounge section says that no religious posts are allowed.

I will obey that restriction by NOT posting my prayer request.

I may be wrong. But a prayer request is not a religious post. You are not debating a religious topic. You are not making negative or derogatory statements. You are simply expressing a need.

@grune said in Opinions on Valve Oils?:

Care to post your opinion/s about valve oils?

My opinion is that you should probably use valve oil. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I used Al Cass back in the 70s/80s. I use Hetman today for 2 reasons: it doesn't smell, and it comes in every variation from thin oil to thick grease.

Some people talked about how long oil lasts. Once a week, I wipe down my valves and casings, and then re-oil. I rarely need to re-oil in between my weekly routine. Personally, I believe this has more to do with my weekly cleaning routine than it does with the oil I use.

What does your routine look like?

Since college, I've divided my routine into 3 sections -- working on the chops, technique, and music. I currently spend about 30 minutes in each area.

      1. Embouchure - long tones, tonguing, lip slurs, etc. , mostly from "Trumpet Solfeggio", sometimes using Clarke or Arbans.

      2. Technique - Scales, patterns, etc., mostly from "Patterns For Jazz".

      3. Music - Memorizing and practicing jazz standards.

      @OldSchoolEuph said in Frustrated:

He who controls the press controls the truth ....

I take time and effort to post content that might be of use to others ....

Censorship is transforming in an Orwellian manner more and more these days into a "defense" of free speech. Surely a community of musicians can find a better way.

I agree with OldSchoolEuph, that it can be frustrating when content is deleted. But I acknowledge that the admins (both here and on TH) have a tough job. I also think OldSchoolEuph's example about Kanstul is valid. Kastul was a common whipping boy on TH, where defamatory remarks often went unchallenged. But after Kanstul shut down, TH took the opposite approach, and began deleting these remarks. However, TH sill allows rude and defamatory remarks about other common targets.

But in the end, while I don't always agree with the admins' choices, I respect their efforts. And while I don't know which thread is in question here, let me add a couple comments, that reflect my view about deleting content.

This is not the "press". This are no the first-amendment issues here. There is no censorship here. We are in TB's house (so to speak), and we live by TB's rules. The same would be true, if you visited my home.

In social medial, the users create free content, which within certain guidelines, the forum exploits as it sees fit. In other words, the forum doesn't exist to serve us, we exist to serve the forum.

    • RE: First Horns

My first horn was a 1970-ish Olds Ambassador Trumpet. It was a standard school rental, which I got during a summer music program, the summer before starting the 4th grade. In high school, I purchased a lightweight 43 Bach Strad, which is the still my main horn today.

I no longer have my first horn. For sentimental reasons, I purchased a 1957 Olds Ambassador Trumpet, which Kanstul restored back in 2012. And although I wasn't looking for one, I ran across a 1957 Olds Ambassador Cornet in close-to-like-new condition, which I purchased a few years back.

How 'bout you folks after zero band participation ? Any troubles ?

I play in a jazz trio, which doesn't rehearse. So the lack of rehearsal time doesn't impact me.

Glad to hear @Dr-GO (Gary) is getting gigs. What type of gig was it? And did you have to make any "social distancing" adjustments?

I've starting playing outdoors with my trio this month. We had our second gig today, which we livestreamed, and used to raise money for local causes. My first real post-COVID gig (unless things change) is early July. It will be an outdoor gig.

      @dr-go

Were there just certain years for the Ambassador ?

Mine was from the mid-60's. I believe TMD's is from the late 50's. His is a nice horn as well.

I have a pair of Ambassadors. A trumpet and cornet, both from 1957. Both are nice horns, well made, great valves, good core. I'll leave the student horn vs pro horn debate to others. I'll just say I like them, but they are not my go-to horns.

I had my 1957 trumpet refurbished by Kanstul. Gary had his Ambassador fully "pimped out".

Anybody master the 1-3, 2-4 trill on a piccolo trumpet? This seems like the ultimate fingering challenge, although a complete waste because there are easier & better-sounding alternatives!

Need two hands for this one. ๐Ÿ˜‰

... or maybe just use 1-3 to 1-2-3 instead?

    • RE: Carol Brass Sticky Valves

      Very sorry this is happening.

New valves need to be broken in. Some more than others. Wipe down the valves and the valve casings with a lint-free cloth and then reoil. Do this every day for 2-4 weeks. If they're still sticking, return the horn.

I'm not a tech, so the following is just my "2 cents" about valves.

      • Valves sticking only when playing (and not sticking when you're not playing), suggests your hand-positioning (at least in part) may be contributing.

      • Valves sticking after the horn warms up (both when playing and not playing), suggests it's a problem with the valves.

Staying in shape is a process. Currently we are replacing certain opportunities with others and this can affect our playing in a serious way.
When we play in large rooms (bandroom or concert venues), what reaches our ears is considerably different than playing with a mute or in a small practiceroom/bedroom.

      Great observation. Worth repeating.

@davidpaul said in Brand-New 1971 Olds Ambassador Trumpet Possible?:

My wife is insisting that the Ambassador trumpet should no longer be allowed in our bed at night. She claims the cold brass is uncomfortable on here back when she accidently touches it. Is she being unreasonable?

Tell your wife that it's unsafe to sleep with the trumpet on her back. Lay the trumpet on the bed, between you two. And make sure the 2nd valve slide is facing up, to prevent STDS (sudden trumpet death syndrome).

@barliman2001 said in Brand-New 1971 Olds Ambassador Trumpet Possible?:

@davidpaul For your own sake, the trumpet should be weaned.

During the weaning process, do you recommend scheduled oiling or demand oiling?

@davidpaul said in Brand-New 1971 Olds Ambassador Trumpet Possible?:

After all, the poor thing is over 50 years old and has hardly ever been played.
