RE: Community Band
It's going to be more than 2 weeks.
My girlfriend's son lives in China and teaches school there. He isn't in the "hot zone", but one of the other cities. They were under strict quarantine for about 6 weeks. The bars and restaurants are now re-opening and there has been no resurgence of virus. (So far.)

RE: Community Band
Well, today the San Francisco Bay area counties all got hit with "shelter in place" orders. That basically means no public meetings of any kind or any size. Bars and restaurants are closed for 3 weeks, although some restaurants can offer take-out. I can't even have a sectional rehearsal at my house.

RE: How about a "Random Meaningless Image...let's see them string"?
OK. I caved. But I was running really, really low. And Sears doesn't send me the "big book" catalog any more. But I took only one package. They guy ahead of me in line had 4.

RE: Community Band
All of my three community bands cancelled the season TODAY because of COVID-19 virus fears. I'll miss the Monday and Friday bands. Wednesday, not so much.

My dad always talked about a place in Honolulu during WWII named Lao-Tse Chow. The proprietor was Wun Hung Lo.

RE: How many of you taught yourself to play?
Sort of. I had piano lessons through most of elementary school, which I neither liked nor excelled at. When I got to Jr. Hi, I wanted to be in the band, partly because it seemed like fun and partly because I thought it might get me out of piano lessons. My cousin had played the cornet for a year or two before quitting, and my mom gave her sis $20 for the old cornet. I already knew how to read music, so I got out the fingering chart and figured it out by myself. After a couple of years in band, I convinced mom to buy me lessons first from a local symphony player and later from another guy that played in a jazz club and the pit orchestra for the local ballet company, among other gigs. ...but playing the trumpet never got me out of piano lessons.

RE: Update on my "saving grace" mouthpiece...
I'm glad it worked for you, Butch.

RE: What Are You Doing New Years, New Years Eve
Packing up so I can hit the road at 5:45 am to get to the airport to fly home with a carry-on dog. What could be better than that?

RE: Mouthpiece recommendations for young beginners
Yeah, but the kid in question is 8 years old. So the smaller size might work for him, for now. 1C, maybe later.

RE: Mouthpiece recommendations for young beginners
10.5C Readily available, cheap, used. Worth a try. I never liked the 7C, even when I was a beginner, due to the shape of the rim. (Very sharp inner lip and heavily rounded outer lip.) I don't know who ever came up with that concept or why. But, for me, it was terrible for endurance. The 10.5C is slightly smaller, but with a fairly flat rim that is much more comfortable. IMO.

RE: Which picc?
Barliman:
Have you ever played an Eterna picc? I had one and, even for a mostly recreational player like me, it just wasn't very good. Also, USD 1,500 is a lot to pay for one. I sold mine for about $950 as I recall (in very good condition). And that was more than I paid for it. I haven't been able to try one of Trent's "doubler" horns, but it is entirely possible they are better than the Eterna picc.

Happy Festivus
It's time again for the airing of grievances, the feats of strength, and, of course.... the pole. At my house, we are doing Festivus on a budget this year, so we went with galvanized steel re-gifted from the electrical foreman on one of my construction projects in lieu of the traditional aluminum.
But here's an opportunity for you. Christmas has "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." Hanukkah has "Light One Candle." And other religions all have their holiday songs. But there is no Festivus song. Write one, record it, and I will award the prize of a Bach 7C mouthpiece to the composer of the best Festivus song. Failing that, you may string your airing of grievances below.
