I used to have a friend named Rodney Leibold. But in the early days of spellcheck, it would always try to autocorrect his name to Rodent Libeled.

RE: Woodworking?
@administrator I belong to the Unitarian church, which uses the "flaming chalice" as one of its symbols. (One wag once said the flaming chalice looks kind of like a candle in a martini glass.) So, I make these chalices out of different woods and give them away to other churches or individuals. They are basically big candle holders. The photo of me at the lathe is a purpleheart chalice in the early stages. The red colored chalice is made from a tropical wood called "bloodwood." (But tropical woods are marketed under many different trade names. There's no telling what species of wood it really is.)

RE: Woodworking?
@Kujo20 Yep. Purpleheart. It turns beautifully, but it's slow going!

The Moon is putting on a show tonight for free. Hurry or you'll miss is.

RE: First Horns
LOL. I still have it, 53 years later. Besson Stratford cornet. Weirdly enough, it still has some of the smoothest valves and slides I have ever owned. Sound quality, not so much.

RE: Please help me to understand something...
- I would imagine that NYP principals have employment contracts that stipulate a bunch of things including salary, number of performances, ownership of intellectual property, no sexual harassment, etc. If the principals do not have individual contracts, there is probably a union master agreement that covers all musicians.
- If they have employment contracts, the musicians are not "at will" employees.
- The contracts probably say the musicians can be terminated for cause for violating various rules.
- The employment contracts probably stipulate binding arbitration for dispute resolution.
- Arbitration is binding. There is no appeal from arbitration except in the very unlikely case that one party can prove malfeasance on the part of the arbitrator. No court ratifies the outcome of an arbitration, although a party to arbitration can go to court to collect on a financial award issued by an arbitrator.

RE: Community Band
It's going to be more than 2 weeks.
My girlfriend's son lives in China and teaches school there. He isn't in the "hot zone", but one of the other cities. They were under strict quarantine for about 6 weeks. The bars and restaurants are now re-opening and there has been no resurgence of virus. (So far.)

RE: Community Band
Well, today the San Francisco Bay area counties all got hit with "shelter in place" orders. That basically means no public meetings of any kind or any size. Bars and restaurants are closed for 3 weeks, although some restaurants can offer take-out. I can't even have a sectional rehearsal at my house.

OK. I caved. But I was running really, really low. And Sears doesn't send me the "big book" catalog any more. But I took only one package. They guy ahead of me in line had 4.

RE: Community Band
All of my three community bands cancelled the season TODAY because of COVID-19 virus fears. I'll miss the Monday and Friday bands. Wednesday, not so much.

My dad always talked about a place in Honolulu during WWII named Lao-Tse Chow. The proprietor was Wun Hung Lo.

RE: How many of you taught yourself to play?
Sort of. I had piano lessons through most of elementary school, which I neither liked nor excelled at. When I got to Jr. Hi, I wanted to be in the band, partly because it seemed like fun and partly because I thought it might get me out of piano lessons. My cousin had played the cornet for a year or two before quitting, and my mom gave her sis $20 for the old cornet. I already knew how to read music, so I got out the fingering chart and figured it out by myself. After a couple of years in band, I convinced mom to buy me lessons first from a local symphony player and later from another guy that played in a jazz club and the pit orchestra for the local ballet company, among other gigs. ...but playing the trumpet never got me out of piano lessons.

I'm glad it worked for you, Butch.
