    • Jazz Song #3 - So What

This weeks featured jazz song is “So What”.

Composed by Miles Davis and recorded in 1959, “So What” became the first song on the iconic record (album) “Kind of Blue”.

Every song on that record is a classic, and we could easily do an entire thread discussing it, but I figured we could start with the beginning.

When I was in high school, our director got an arrangement of “So What” that featured the trumpet instead of bass for the head. I remember thinking it wasn’t a good fit (and I still don’t).

          • More coming soon...I’m in a remote location of sorts without a computer, so this is all being done on a little phone!

      Yup, bass trumpet.

I think he’s had it for a few years now.

He has a few oddball horns like this one that aren’t on stage as often. Look up his “Jean” flugel.

Then there's the question about using a "Doodle-tongue", or no tongue, in jazz articulations.

Regardless of the articulation, the tongue should stay loose and flexible.

This I why I always struggled with double and triple tongue techniques.

Without actually playing an instrument, I find it easy to relax and double/triple tongue.... but once the buzzing starts, it gets harder to relax and play it correctly.

Is this a state of mind kind of thing, or a lack of muscular development, or...?

Semi related issue...the same is true with circular breathing for me. Piece of cake without playing the horn - increased difficulty once buzzing begins.

I never knew this song had lyrics. Interesting.

From what I read, the lyrics came years later and not by the original composer.

Another fun fact* from my research.

Before Paul Desmond died in the 70’s, he left all of his music royalties to the American Red Cross.

The ARC generally gets around $100,000 each year from those royalties.

      • “Fact”.... Assuming that what I read on the internet is indeed true.

    • Jazz Song #2 - Take Five

This week’s jazz classic for dissection... Take Five!

Composed by Paul Desmond and often credited to Dave Brubeck (I just learned that...I thought Dave wrote it)

In a world that is seemingly DOMINATED with 4/4 music, I have always found Take Five refreshing and original.

Also just learned today, Take Five has lyrics. Written by Don Partridge (to Desmond’s original melody)
      They are:

      Won't you stop and take
A little time out with me
      Just take five

      Stop your busy day
      And take the time out
      To see if I'm alive

Though I'm going out of my way
Just so I can pass by each day
Not a single word do we say
      It's a pantomime and not a play
Still, I know our eyes often meet
I feel tingles down to my feet
When you smile, that's much too discreet
      Sends me on my way

Wouldn't it be better not to be so polite
      You could offer a light
      Start a little conversation now
      It's alright, just take five
      Just take five

@flugelgirl Great. I'd like to see some examples of clear producer distinctiveness.

I think there are a handful of distinctive parts/horns out there that quickly identify the maker.

-BAC’s leadpipe receiver and their main tuning slide “loop” brace.

      -Taylor bells and leadpipes

-Basically any small part on a Harrelson (I’ll single out both his bracing and finger rings)

      -Schilke’s trim kit parts

That’s just a few off the top of my head.

I won’t go as far to say “best”, but the Zirnbauer set on my Schlub flugelhorn is simply amazing.

Top notch craftsmanship, extremely fast, pretty much silent, and as smooth as can be.

Here are the lyrics for “A Night In Tunisia”

The moon is the same moon above you
Aglow with its cool evening light
But shining at night, in Tunisia
Never does it shine so bright

The stars are aglow in the heavens
      But only the wise understand
That shining at night in Tunisia
They guide you through the desert sand

Words fail, to tell a tale
      Too exotic to be told
      Each night's a deeper night
      In a world, ages old

The cares of the day seem to vanish
The ending of day brings release
      Each wonderful night in Tunisia
Where the nights are filled with peace

    • Jazz Song #1 - A Night In Tunisia

      Good evening TB.

I like the idea of discussing some jazz music/songs in depth.

My goal will be to post once a week about a singular song.

Please contribute your thoughts, opinions, video links, memories, horror stories, favorite arrangements, technical musings, etc...!

To start, I’d like to single out “A Night In Tunisia”.

My personal favorite rendition is Dizzy Gillespie and his United Nations Orchestra (1989 Royal Festival Hall).

The band was on fire the entire night, including this concert ender. Not only are the solos from each member memorable...but they are all having so much fun!

Claudio Roditi’s solo was a personal eye opener for me. I had never heard a trumpet sound like that. Definitely an inspiration for my earlier years of playing and trying to find “my sound”.

      Let’s open the discussion up!

Wouldn’t that be nice....wish I could! But I would imagine the round trip flight plus the purchase of a horn would equal....bankruptcy!

Maybe someday. Or we could all beg Trent to become a dealer? Did somebody say petition? 🙂

I’m also fairly certain that Inderbinen uses outsourced valve blocks. They don’t mention it on their website, but I think they still use Bauerfiend/Adams.

Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong.

PS...I would really like to try their instruments out. I’ve been waiting for somebody in America to become a dealer for years. No joking, I would schedule a quick vacation to any city in the US if somebody like ACB, Dillons, Chuck Levins, etc...started to carry Inderbinen.

One quick correction...Taylor switched from Carol valve blocks to Getzen 1-2 years ago. Too bad he stopped using Baurfiend after Adams bought them...

    • RE: countries / states represented here?

Born and raised in the Kalamazoo Michigan area...home of a lot of musical instrument making giants!

Gibson (Kalamazoo), York (Grand Rapids)...and even though he didn’t do business in Kalamazoo, Dave Monette was born in the area.

With a handful of people representing Ohio...I sure hope a few more reps from the Superior State pop up! Although, I must admit, the Ohio reps here on TB certainly seem to be good people!
