      Bigdub,

I just returned from a 3 week vacation in Oregon and California. My wife and I visited four different National Parks (Redwoods, Shasta Trinity, Yosemite, and Sequoia). We took a little over 1000 photos...if you’re interested, I could email some to you that you could use as reference photos for your painting. We have a lot of landscapes, waterfalls/rivers, wild animals, ocean shots, giant trees...etc...

    • RE: Help! I need to hit that high note!

Arturo does have a Harrelson...but to be completely honest and fair...he has a LOT of different trumpets.

The guy has jumped from one brand to another to another for years. I think some are gifted to him by makers hoping he’ll love it and cause the rest of us to go “If Arturo likes it, it must be really good... I’m going to buy one!”.

I know of a handful of websites that claim Arturo plays their horn/mouthpiece. It’s a claim to fame!

I’d love to see a candid, non biased interview with him where he addresses his love for trumpet gear.

    • RE: Kanstul -- Any News?

I think it was mentioned in another thread, but BAC out of Kansas City bought all of Kanstul’s tooling.

Mike Corrigan put a video on the Facebook page announcing it.

      Thanks, Guys.

As Barliman says, things have become a little hectic over here, but I hope to drop in from time to time and provide some more 'unique input'!

While I'm here, Mrs Seth and I are in Kuala Lumpur next month visiting family, and I was wondering if Schlub Brass Works was still going in Singapore. The web site is a little ambiguous ...

... and Mrs Seth hasn;t had any new jewellery for a while.

Schlub is in the USA now...website hasn’t really been updated for a few years.

    • RE: Monetization of/for TrumpetBoards

I don’t know how all of that stuff works... but what about getting sponsors that are related to the forum subject?

Those sponsors could get ads or a plug for their products and shops and TB gets some costs covered...? Ads for trumpets/brass on a trumpet forum would probably get more hits than other websites.

There’s no shortage of manufacturers and shops and they all already do some sort of advertising or marketing.

Just the beginning of an idea...?

BAC bought the tooling for their own operations, I believe

Mike would be a great person to carry on with that tooling. Better than ending up with some huge conglomerate instrument makers...that’s my opinion at least.

If only it worked like that!

Oh...and in case it does work like that...I’ll take it up to an even $100.

Good luck finding a flugel piece. It took me years to find the one I have and I haven’t seen any (real ones) since.

Yes, these are really hard to find. I should have kept the 1-2 I had.
I have Art Farmer's back up piece (artists were only allowed one of a piece at time apparently) in my stash and it's an amazing piece.

The piece I have isn’t marked with any number/designation that Al used. I had his son Steve check it out...and he is fairly certain that it was an early prototype of the Art Farmer piece.

    • RE: Game of Thrones Thread

I’ve read the books and watched the first two seasons. I made the choice early on that I’d prefer to finish the original story (books) before moving on with the show.

I didn’t expect that GRR Martin would take so freaking long to finish them and that the show would finish first....sheesh. I’m pretty sure he started writing the first book back in the 90’s. Anyway...

George has a great writing style and he certainly knows how to weave a story together. It takes a certain kind of mind to have sooooo many memorable characters with so much going on AND be able to connect them all together in such a clean way. He doesn’t leave plot holes, he doesn’t use the typical expositional cheats that most story tellers use, and he certainly doesn’t pander to the masses.

The one character I have focused on as a potential “sleeper” to come back by storm (in the books) is Benjen Stark. This guy “disappears” in the first book and hasn’t been brought back yet. I’ve thought for years now that he would be a great character to bring back... likely through Bran’s storyline.

You never know with these books (or the show) though. Your favorite character could go at any time.

    • RE: What the heck!?

Andy Taylor made a joke trumpet once called “Trumpet Makers Revenge”.

It was a screw bell trumpet with a second bell that literally (more so than the horn this thread is about) brought the bell within inches of the players face.

I believe he would bring it to conventions and offer players to test it out so he wouldn’t have to continually listen to attempts at double C’s and amateurs blasting their chops off in his direction. It would be a great horn to keep a trumpeter honest!

I’ll have to see if he still has a page about it on his website.

So what does Bach and Schilke use? I was under the impression they made their own valves, blocks, bells, pipes, etc...

      Is that not true?

Couple more that I think fit the definition.

      -Raw Brass Trumpets
      -Possegger
      -Marcinkiewicz
-Benchmark (I just recently heard about this maker...I don’t know too much about them)
      -Inderbinen
      -G&P Wind instruments
      -AR Resonance

I finally remembered some European makers.

    • RE: Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker

      [link text](link url)

Nothing wrong with assemblers! I love the Taylor Trumpet I have in the shop (Getzen valves) and am excited to get a new Puje from my frien soon (also Getzen block).

I’ve posed the same question to myself and others before. The same is asked for different trades/crafts all over.

Very few trumpet makers have the resources and tools to manufacture valves and valve blocks. How many companies do?

Getzen, Kanstul, Bach, Schilke, Adams, Zirnbaur, Meinlschmidt, Monette, and Carol Brass are the big ones that come to my mind right away. Compare that to the amount of trumpet makers out there...the scales tip pretty heavily to one side.

I still think that the craftsmen we’ve listed above are ultimately considered horn makers though. Especially the ones that design and manufacture the rest of the components.

“Assemblers” (my opinion) would better describe people that purchase all the parts and then assemble (a Getzen block, a Taylor bell, a Bach leadpipe and tuning slide, and other trim parts/braces/rings to make a horn). There is still a design element there...but no manufacturing, no building etc...

      Those are my two cents.

I was under the impression that Flip Oakes designed his horns, but Kanstul did the building... someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Obviously that may be changing if Kanstul doesn’t come back.

      Gotcha.

      Mike Del Quadro
      George Schlub
Mike Corrigan (custom series is in house)
      Brent Peters @ Puje Trumpets
      Ewan Divitt (Canada)
Josh Landress makes some of his own I think.

Those are just off the top of my head...I’m sure there are many more boutique makers all over the world that deserve a mention. I’m sure others will chime in.

    • RE: Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker

What do we consider as “only made by their maker”?

Does that mean the maker fabricates every single part of the horn (including springs, corks, spit keys and all)? If it means that, I don’t think such a horn exists.

Or does it mean they fabricate all major parts in house? Valves, pipes, bells...in that case the examples will be extremely low still. Almost every horn brand I can think of buys either valves/valve blocks or bells (many times both) to assemble their instruments.

Or does it mean only one pair of hands assembles/builds the horn (using either bought or self fabricated parts)? If this, there are plenty of examples in the US besides the two you mentioned.

Where's Louis Armstrong? Bix Beiderbecke? Doc Severinsen? Heck, even Maynard Ferguson?

Agreed. I see two spots that are labeled “many others” and “untold others”...but I think the whole tree could be revamped. Who has the knowledge and time to do it?

Jon Faddis is branched right off of Dizzy...but no Arturo?

Wouldn’t Buddy Bolden and King Oliver be near or at the very top?
