    • RE: What happened to Jazz programming?

Bob Parlocha ran a great jazz radio program out of Western Michigan University before he died.

That was a fantastic program...I was introduced to so many artists and their music.

Bob would read from liner notes to list the song, composer/arranger, who played each instrument, who played the solos...etc.

He would play such a broad sampling of music. Not just standards and the big names...and even though he was a sax player, you never saw any favoritism to sax artists in his program. It was always a perfect balance and always great quality.

WMU or Parlocha’s estate should compile those recordings/shows and make them available for sale. I know I would buy them.

    • RE: First Horns

My first horn was a used Yamaha YTR2320.

Served me well for several years until I upgraded to a Xeno. The 2320 was still used as a bad weather marching horn.

Well, as the admin mentioned earlier.... the members are responsible for the content.

We are all only going to get out of this site what we put into it.

    • RE: Its Been an Age Long Requirement But How Many Can Do It?

Many singers call notes as they are on piano (in terms of octaves).

The lowest note on piano being A0...the next octave being A1, then A2...etc...etc

I don’t see why other instruments couldn’t do the same. That’s about as easy as it can get.

Good grief. What does a lot of this stuff have to do with music or trumpet playing?

My thoughts exactly. Only a matter of time that this thread gets out of hand and is locked...

    • RE: Values

      Same here!

I bought mine about 5 years ago for 35.00 in one of Dillon Music’s “garage sales”.

Great sounding cornet...I’ll probably never sell it.

Ironically...the last time I checked Dillon’s site, they had one listed in the 700 dollar range.

You see, I’m the opposite. I’ll take the freezing/below freezing temperatures of Michigan over 80 degree weather any day.

If the tech is 100% responsible for the damage, then he needs to make it right...and at his cost.

      We have lost another giant.

Thanks for the great music and the inspiration Claudio.

    • RE: How many of you taught yourself to play?

I did not teach myself trumpet...but I used that knowledge to teach myself French horn, euphonium, piano, and various percussion instruments.

Once you have the basics, many instruments are fairly easy to pick up.

      Mastery generally requires coaching though.

    • RE: Arturo Sandoval

Yup, Arturo is a true lover of good gear!

There are many makers around the world that boast on their websites that Arturo uses their horn, mouthpiece, mute, case/bag, etc.

I’ve always liked that Arturo enjoys multiple instruments and doesn’t necessarily “promote” one brand over others. Many musicians do...and even go as far to say or imply that brand X is “better” than any other.

Arturo finds joy in any instrument that he can make music with (it seems that way at least).

    • RE: BAC Plaza

If it is any indication...ACB has two of BAC’s “Paseo” trumpets listed at $3500 ($3495).

I’d be willing to bet BAC lists between that and $4000

    • RE: BAC Plaza

BAC has been around for a while...not really what I would call a “new brand”.

Plus, they are top notch instrument makers. I’ve thought for a while now that they don’t quite get the recognition they should.

Seems as if it doesn’t matter... I see a red “banned” banner next to one of the names. I’m not sure what happened there.

@Kehaulani said in Happy Birthday Clifford!:

Lead a drug-filled life and you'll live longer.

Whew, I wish that were true. A lot of my friends and associates (really top shelf musicians) are taking a dirt nap because of drugs, cigarettes or alcohol.

A sad, but true fact about many people (musicians and non musicians).

That could make a great topic in the medical concerns forum...the effects of overuse of smoking/drugs/alcohol in terms that relate to trumpet playing.

Sorry for the tangent...back to Mr. Brown’s birthday and his wonderful music!

I have yet to find a Comittee I’ve enjoyed enough to bother with

      Me Too!
I own a really nice vintage Committee and I only play it occasionally to keep the moving parts from freezing up. Its great for people that like them but its just not my cup of tea. However, you have to admit, it's a kick ass looking horn but in my opinion not $70,000 worth of kick ass. However, there are people on this site that love old Committees and just might jump at the chance to own this piece of history. Purchase alert! This horn will NOT make you sound like Miles Davis.

Just saw through Monette’s Facebook page that the Miles Davis horn sold for $220,000.00.

Everybody chew on that for a bit.
