As my chops getolder and crankier I sometime find myself changing mouthpieces from one that works most times but troublesome at other times to something I bought and used that worked well in earlier days. And for a brief honeymoon the change works now. But soon old problems raise their ugly heads and I end up going back to what I was currently using.
I hope the honeymoon works long enough to solve your problem.

If you don't enjoy every one of the ones you have, you have too many.
I concur with this statement. I own 6 trumpets, a cornet and a flugel. The trumpets get played regularly on a rotational schedule and the flugel and cornet get use for certain pieces of music that seem, to me, to benefit from their particular sound.

RE: Olds models
I have some great horns in my collection but the Olds Recording is the only one I have a hard time putting down for the day. I just want to go on playing it forever.

RE: Differences between Olds models
Great, Doc. All that was good to know. I had a chance to buy a Super but felt it was overpriced and chose the Recording instead. Absolutely no regrets. Somedays I have a hard time putting the Recording away for the day. I just want to keep on playing.

I wish I could help but I really only know about the Recording model. Doc may know. I'm sure he'll reply if he can add something positive to the thread.

RE: Tough Decision to make
I have some great horns in my collection. Each has its own characteristics that I love, but one stands out amongs them all, and that is the 1940 Olds Recording I added recently. Whatever kind of music, from classical to country, you want to play, the Olds just gets the job done. I know this sounds crazy, but it is as it plays itself and you are just along for the ride.

I think I'm just getting frustrated with people who are chasing their tails as a diversion from spending their time getting in solid practicing. Micro-analyzing this and that; not only missing the forest for the trees, but nit-picking what kind of tree it is
Yeah I see a lot of that in postings at the other site and it drives me crazy. If all that time analyzing was spent on some good solid practice of fundamentals they would all be much better off.

RE: Diversions
My problem was in accepting the fact that playing in my eighties is not the same as playing in my teens and twenties. So I was always striving to be better than I was. And knowing that even though I played first trumpet I was not good enough to play lead because the endurance just wasn't there and that made me try harder and harder.
People close to me often said I was being too hard on myself, that no one is perfect. And two years ago two of my bandmates, also first trumpet players, sat me down and told me I was a better player than I thought I was and should accept the fact that there is nothing wrong with being an adequate player in an award winning band.
I still practice fundamentals in the morning and play tunes in the afternoon, but stopped criticizing my playing. I will always want to play better than I played the day before, but I don't sweat it anymore. Adequate is just fine for this 86 year old player.

Thanks for that thought-provoking post. I was the one who made the request and I'll be interested to see what kind of replies you will get here.

Oh, man, looking at that painting ( picture ) I felt myself transposed, breathing the fresh autumn air as I walked along that peaceful country road, leaving the cares of the world far behind me.
You are an amazing artist, Wayne.
