    • RE: Cataract Surgery

      @barliman2001

      Thanks for the reply. The surgeons seem to vary in their instructions and I do believe that has a lot to do about how well the surgery went. BTW, I own a P.E.T.E. that I do a daily exercise with the chops. The Doc had no problem with that.
      So I stopped playing on Wednesday and after 7 days I will start up in a very gentle soft and easy manner, and sticking to the staff. After that I'll see how things are going and act accordingly.

      Thanks everyone for your excellent help and advice.

      Hi, Steve, I fully intend to listen to her. She was particularly happy with the surgery and though she said a week to ten days, but she did add she felt a week would be fine if I did exactly what you suggested in taking things slow and easy. Look, I am two months away from turning 87 and I hope to be playing the trumpet when I am 100 😁 so I am not a man who takes foolish chances. Thanks so much for your expert input, Steve. And thank you, too, Jericho
      And, BTW, the eye is coming along just great with no pain and no discomfort.

      I fully intend to do what you suggest, but when should I start playing again. Did you have cataract surgery ?

      Yeah, seems the operation does tire you out a bit. I sometime doze off in the afternoon, probably normal for most 86 year olds, other than myself. I could never nap during the day before I had cataract surgery.
      How long before you actually played the trumpet again ?

    • Cataract Surgery

      Anyone here with cataract surgery experience and when to resume playing the trumpet ?

      I had surgery this past Tuesday. The surgeon requested that I put down the horn for at least a week to 10 days, but admitted that although she had performed cataract surgery on many musicians she couldn't recall doing one on a trumpet player per se and suggested I talk to other players who have had cataract surgery for a more precise time frame.

      Now that was really interesting. I use P.E.T.E. and the end of each day and now I will add Fish Face. I tried it as he was talking and I could feel its effect immediately. Thanks for that, Steve.

      He looks and plays great for a man of 88. How old was he when he died and was he still playing ?

    • RE: Olds Recording Tuning Slide

      @rjkossman
      Sorry to hear that, rj. I can't help you with your inquiry, though I'm sure someone here will.
      I own a Recorder along with several other great horns and I also leave them on their stands. BUT ! The one thing I always do and highly recommend to you, to do it too, is to swab the lead pipe and tuning slides, as well as the the other slides, after every use. Do that and you won't have red rot problems.
      Good luck in finding a supplier,

      I do like my Buescher 400, but as you say, nothing extraordinary, just a well made good player. I often wondered how those earlier Aristocrats performed.

      Thanks, Guys. I've been looking for a long time for one of these in top ( almost new condition ) like this one is.

      I believe it was around 1958 that the wife of Mr. White sat down with Harry James and presented him with the King Super 20 Silversonic Symphonic Bb Trumpet, made and designed just for him and him alone. Harry must have really loved it because he only played that particular model for the rest of his life.

      The story goes that it was the sterling silver bell that hooked him. I don't know how long the Super 20 with the sterling silver bell was exclusive to Harry James, but eventually it was available to anyone who could afford it and one fellow in particular, Ziggy Elman, when he plays it sounds exactly like Harry James. I once did a blind test for fun and couldn't tell who the hell was playing, Harry or Ziggy.

      For me, it was always a legendary trumpet. I'm not sure if it is still being made today, especially since the White family sold the company a few years ago, but for me the " Made by H.N.White " had to be on the bell.

      I don't know much about the King Golden Flair, Kehaulani, but let us know when you get it.

      It's the 1960s King Super 20 Silversonic Symphony Bb Trumpet with a sterling silver and gold washed bell, silver lead pipe and gold trimmings, and is a dual bore from .464 to .468.

      This is the King model that Harry James played from the mid 50s up until his death.
      I can't wait to hold it in my hands,

      Well, I am surprised. This fellow can sing. I never thought I would ever hear those old ballads from the lips of Robert Palmer. Thanks for sharing.
