    • RE: Wayne Shorter Will Be Missed

      @dr-go

      I think he would say, that living until age 89 has left him with no regrets. He had a hell of a ride during his life, but still, his greatness and talent will be surely missed.

      I am 86 and I hope I make it to 89. I too will have no regrets, with one exception: I will leave the world wishing I had been an even better trumpet man than I was.

      Rest in peace, Wayne.

      Yeah, I logged in last night and it was okay, but it is crazy that you were locked out like that. I find the site is still working very slowly. Must be a softwear problem.

      Kehaulani's advice is exactly what you should do. Now if it was shipped to you anything can happen, so best to contact the dealer.

      Yes, that answers a lot of questions I had. Thanks for the video and the comments.
      I wasn't questioning Kehaulani. His knowledge of music is way above my head and I have much respect for him for many reasons.

      Can you name a couple of J.S.Bach's solo works that might be on you tube ? I would like to hear him improvise.

      Well, I've heard worse attempts at singing, including my own, but all in all I'd say, good job, Steve. And a nice production you put together, too.

    • RE: $800 Box of Mouthpieces!

      @barliman2001
      Strange that you should recommend donating unused mouthpieces. I, too, have assembled many mouthpieces in the past 7 years since my return to playing. And just two days ago I had some that were definitely of no use to me and I donated them to the local middle school band where we practice. There were 5 trumpet pieces and two cornet pieces all in excellent condition and by top names such as Curry, Bach, Getzen and Stork.
      You are correct, sir, it is always a good thing to donate to deserving causes, and having our youngsters involved in music is one of the top causes I support. I recently donated a Flugel to this same school for use in their jazz band.

      I bought the dvd when it was released several years ago. Good acting by Ethan Hawke, who took trumpet lessons so he could look more believable as Chet Baker, but it was indeed the Canadian player who did the actual playing, and he was fantastic.
      I don't know how much of the film is factual, but it got good reviews from those who knew Chet so I'd guess it was an acceptable attempt. I watch the movie once or twice a year and always enjoy it, even though the ending is downbeat.

      I don't recall hearing your wife sing on a posted video. Is it possible you could do that one of these days. I would love to hear her.

      The older I get the more difficult it is to play good clean low notes below the staff. What helps me, beside moving to a larger mp .650 to .664, is to start at C on the staff and blow long notes down to #F, then back up and down again a few times a day. Also intervals from on the staff to below are helpful.
      Good to hear you are back at it,

      @anniebee
      That is a good move, Annie. Your story is a sad one. I am an 86 year old trumpet player who is finding that playing the trumpet is becoming an ever more difficult instrument to play each new year. My glory years were between 1953 and 1965 when I had my own 5 piece band. I stopped playing in 1965 to concentrate on a career in printing and publishing. After my wife passed away in 2012 I started thinking about playing the trumpet again but didn't do anything positive until 2016. The loss of my wife took a terrible toll on me but once I started back at music, my life went through a change and the trumpet became my salvation. I am playing first trumpet with one of the best community bands in my part of the world. Age is a challenge but I always did love a challenge.
      Good luck on switching to the violin.The main thing is you are sticking with music and music is magic for the soul.

      Trent Austin and his boys will take good care of you.
