I agree with everything in your post, Doc. Most of that, especially the left and especially the right hand grip, proper posture and avoidance of buzzing was taught to me in 1953 by a professional player who was also my teacher.
I have never found buzzing the mp of any use to me. What I sometimes do for a quick warm is place the mp on my chops, cover the end of the shank with a finger and blow a scale or two, which is just blowing against resistance. This seems to awaken the muscles in the chops and leaves me ready to go.

RE: Hetman. What's up?
I switched to Berp last year because Hetman was hard to find in all 3 viscosities in Canada. I am happier with Berp. No more of that yellow stuff coming out of my spit valves.

RE: Artist on BOARD
Watching you do that painting brought back memories of when I used to play around with watercolors. If there are any other artist members here they will learn a lot watching that video.
By the way, GREAT PAINTING !

RE: Play It Sam, Play As Time Goes By
And the Academy Award goes to Steve Smith... and he isn't a bad trumpet player either.
Nice work, Steve. That is one of my favorite ballads.

RE: YouTube Suggestion
Ha ha, you are correct. But I think they'd make an exception for an old goat like me....

RE: YouTube Suggestion

RE: Some good...."non-trumpeting" music :)
That was great fun. I grew up watching those old musicals and thought I was in love with Vera Ellen and her gorgeous legs. Gene Kelly was definitely America's best athletic dancer and proves by some of the scenes in this video. Lot of hard work must have went into editing all those scenes to match the rhythm of Jackson's song. Just proves that music taste can change but rhythm never changes.

RE: Wynton Marsalis trumpet
@rowuk said in Wynton Marsalis trumpet:
I think that if he were to make a current recording, he probably would get a made to purpose horn from Dave Monette.
Yes, I would definitely agree.
I do recall seeing and listening to a video where he accompanies a classical female singer, and he was playing a Flugel, which was probably a Monette. I wish I had saved the video because Wynton was heavier and older than those early videos of him playing the Haydn Trumpet Concertos.

RE: Wynton Marsalis trumpet
@curlydoc
For jazz most of the videos I've seen him in he is playing his Monette Prana. The trumpets I've see him using for classical music I can't identify but they are definitely not his Monette Prana. -
RE: Helloooooo
After my retirement 20 years ago my 6 figure income dropped to 5 figures on the low side. My reportable income hasn't changed much these past 20 years. But I get by.

RE: Check her out.
Fantastic. Imagine what she will be doing with the trumpet 20 years from now.
I'd give my eye teeth to be able to play like that again. My old brain is letting me down bit by bit when it comes to fast tempo playing these days.

RE: How do I begin to learn "jazz trumpet?"
Everything that Kehaulani wrote, plus spend a lot of time learning to play the old standards, because in my opinion they were and still are a solid foundation for what jazz is all about. I play a dozen or so standards every afternoon as part of my daily practice sessions and I play every chance I get with other jazz lovers.

RE: What are you listening to?
@dr-go
Practicing everyday for 50 years is everything, Doc.I often wonder what kind of player I would have been today had I not stopped playing for 50 years. I truly believe the hardships I suffer in my playing today at age 85 would not be there.
Don't ever give it up, Doc.

Hey, Doc, I always appreciate your playing. You always have a great sound be it Flugel or Trumpet.

If she played her first note after 3 minutes I'd say you are a fine teacher, sir. I wish you a speedy recovery.

A few thoughts. The pleural effusion may still be present. It can take 3 to 6 months for this to resolve. The fluid will restrict lung volume with can make you feel short of breath. Alternatively it also takes 3 months for the airway inflammation to resolve. Bronchodilators really do not help much in either case.
I would recommend using the incentive spirometor that was introduced in a recent post. Also a 3 month course of an inhaled steroid may benefit. Also when sleeping at night, having a cool mist vaporizer may benefit in residual secretion clearance. We should never underestimate the healing power of water.
Getting a follow up chest x-ray in 4 to 6 weeks is advised.
Not sure if you had received the pneumovax series, but if not, I would advise getting this done to help prevent a future pneumonia.
Hope this advice helps . Wishing you a speedy recovery!
I knew you'd eventually reply to this Thread. After reading all this I certainly do not want to get pneumonia. I will take your advice, Doc and get the needle.
