Didn't Francis Scott Key write only the text? Then wouldn't he have had no influence over the melody?

The melody used was an old British tune.

Yes, a pub song I believe. But it's all about how those amazing lyrics are placed into that context.

As long as it comes from the performers heart as a form of reverence for our country, that is what counts. As we are a country full of diversity, diversity is what we should expect from our Star Spangled Banner. Francis Scott Key wrote this song in the key of life, of an individual's life. That is what we should expect from this song.

Not to brag (well maybe a little), but just saw this discussion on a drummer's Facebook post that scored a live recording of a concert I played with an internationally known violinist at a concert in Dayton a couple years ago. But the drummer was just listening to it now so is true to the thread:

I prefer to draw on melodic quotes from similar songs or parts of songs, maybe riffs or licks, maybe some rhythmic ideas.

This concept was a real priority for Miles Davis that I read from his autobiography.

I actually applied to be a roller, and they accepted my application as I have served as such a role modal for the profession (and I make more money than in my current gig).

    • RE: I found my way back... Sorry, it's been so long!

Glad to see you are back Butch! I have had a couple gigs, one very risky after we were promised by the venue there would be no dancing, the band would be in a separate section of the building and all would be wearing mask. Nix to all of that, but that was the weekend before Thanksgiving and still healthy with no symptoms. Did a Christmas Eve Church gig through our local musician union and that went perfectly with excessive mask wearing and social distancing.

Now that I have had both of my Covid vaccines I am feeling much less on edge. Like GeorgeB, I am looking for nylon to play through... but while it is still on the waitress!

@oldschooleuph said in 1963 Martin Committee Medium Bore #2 Bb Trumpet:

Back when these were built, lacquer would certainly play different than raw brass, plating shouldn't have any effect (see the Schilke paper in the surviving loyalist material)...

Not so sure about this. Back in the vintage days of Committee's, the lead level in brass was quit high and then the Federal Government placed regulation to remove lead from brass alloy in 1953. So it may be as well the lead content of brass that had some impact on play quality of late 40's Committee.

    • RE: Tinnitus sufferers here ?

Here is another article on prevalence of tinnitus in musicians, based on instruments they play. Wind instruments take the biggest hit.

That's interesting because I've read the opposite. Matter of fact, he spent most of his practice time womanizing and drinking.

    • RE: appearances vs practice

Instead of saying Teeee or Taaaa, say Ooooooo (as in Dr. GOoooooo). That will get an easier approach to getting lower notes.

    • RE: appearances vs practice

Lower notes require more open embouchure. So you will need to relax the lower jaw and open the throat more to adjust to producing more airflow.

I thought this was such an amazing story of a 12 year old that has serenaded many health care workers and patients during the pandemic, and find it amazingly gratifying that he has been given the chance to represent trumpet players in the inauguration.
