Thanks so much for this amazing history lesson! I had the great pleasure of playing behind Louie Bellson playing lead trumpet in a big band backing him up during a Rocky Mountain tour. I had the best seat in the house, standing on a riser standing just above the master drummer. An experience and memory that is one of the most special in my music career.

But thank our lucky stars the article didn't discuss the pit falls of getting older! So I believe, Dale, that we are good!šŸ‘

An example from this reading: The use of the pinky ring. Here is the position of the author of the article on Body Mapping for Trumpet Players:

When is pinky ring use necessary?
In 2 situations is the pinky ring use necessary.

      1. The pinky ring support is necessary during mute changes, plunger mute passages, and fast page turns.
      2. Young players are often tempted to use the pinky ring because it helps them to support the trumpet, however, once supporting the trumpet with the left arm becomes a habit, using the pinky ring can be avoided. A free pinky leads to free fingers and free wrists.

When is pinky ring use not necessary?

      1. Outside of the above situations, placing the pinky finger in the ring should be avoided.

      Reasoning:
When the pinky finger is in the ring it encourages pulling the trumpet into the embouchure, restricts movement of the other fingers, and prohibits any rotation at the wrist.

    • Body Mapping for Trumpet Players

My weekend contribution to trumpet pedagogy involves medical aspects of trumpet playing. I found this amazingly interesting article that provides some insight as to how to best position the body for trumpet performance, I found it fascinating that just simple aspects of playing the trumpet in the sitting vs standing position demands different roll of the placement of anatomical positions (head related to spin, arm position, leg positions, etc.. Some interesting concepts here. I would love to hear commentary as to how member agree or disagree with some of this concepts. Here is a pdf of the original article. Enjoy!

Loved it. Other players with similar talent are Pete Rodriguez and Michael Rodriguez (actually not related).

I would agree that Dr. Mark was a prolific, knowledgeable, instructor, and valuable contributor.

I agree with all of these. He was also an angry man and was taking it out on several members and with painful aggression. I also noted we lost a lot of members during his attack phase.

I think the decision by our monitors to ban him from the site was appropriate and respect their decision. Hopefully, with GeorgeB's input, we can move forward on pedagogy, and I would hope Valgano Brother would take the lead as he is an expert in this field.

Not the version but I have another Shure wireless mic system and REALLY LOVE IT. This system I have and the mic on a flex rod that attaches nicely to the third valve slide.

But then there is this version (the sign off for WNOP in Cincinnati when I was a kid), I think the most beautiful version of the Star Spangled Banner EVER. Lou Rawls. LOVE THAT PIC TRUMPET PART:

I really don't care about the physics involved. I am just glad I am able to keep the pitch up without working my butt off again.

Not really physics but anatomy. The tongue is on the top end, the butt on the bottom end... he said, tongue in cheek...

Jason Harrelson must agree as well as I heard he uses CarolBrass valve blocks for his horns. Love my Harrelson, and love the valve block!

    • RE: Lifelong musician, beginning trumpeter

Oh... the progress will grow exponentially.... after about 20 years! But until that time, linear growth is fun as well. Your progress will ALWAYS be dependent on endurance. So the fact that you have a teacher, your linear growth phase will have a more rapid slope.

I started out as a keyboard player, a Hammond B-3. Two levels of keyboards and several octaves of foot pedals. BUT just flip the switch off and on with the Leslie... and man, ANYTHING on that organ will sound good!

Now, reflecting back, with all that multiple tasking to achieve on an organ, I still found the trumpet more of a challenge, as it is all about your physiology conquering the physics of brass tubing... and to me, that is very gratifying.

Son of a B'! The LA recording leadpipe measures in at 13.125 inches, and the Fullerton Recording at exactly 13.000 inches. So the LA leadpipe is aa eighth of an inch longer than the Fullerton, which may explain why it plays flat in both your hands and my hands. I mean, it couldn't be the hands being that we are both sharp lads!

Run hot water over the the lead pipe and the third valve insertion tube for about five minutes. It has worked for me several times.

Put the physics of coefficient of expansion of metal at work!
