This is the C-Instrument version of Wave:

First of all, play the opening DOWN the octive if you are playing ANY of the head, as this is the Tenor Sax voicing. But it sounds to me that you are really backing up around the vocalist. Now that you have the chords written out, playing around them is the task at hand. The real HARD part is interjecting your lines AROUND the vocalist. This is an art form and changes second to second in real time, so writing out an improve line may not work. My recommendation is to just go to a real book in advance of the gig and practice playing around it OR even better find a vocalist singing this on YouTube and rehears to that recording with these changes in front of you.

Hope this helps and is the idea you are looking for.

      To Healthy Smile:

Virtual Trumpet. This could be an intriguing feature. Does this enable you to plug in an actual mouthpiece through a USB port and then play a trumpet feature on your site?

Going on a Disney Cruise in September and they do not allow musical instruments on the ship. They do allow lap tops. So if you have this feature, man am I sold. If you don't have this feature, could it possible be created... by September?

Attacks? Nope, everything I said is true. You are a hospital employee who argues with the Yamaha Corp.
      Time for me to practice.

      Oh come on, now.

I have called once again for administrator intervention.

    • RE: Arranger's Hell - brought to you by Antonio Jobim

Let me offer an example: Here is a trumpet player (Till Bronner) backing up a female vocalist on another Jobim song, "Once I Loved". He keeps the background simple in answers to the words or faint backing up the lines she is singing, but sparingly so. Hope this provides some idea of what you may be able to offer with a vocalist in front.

Notice also that on Till's solo, it is basically the chart with different phrasing and yes a few creative notes added as well.

      @barliman2001 Wise words

I am put in mind of a trumpet player who travelled to an Islamic country where music was banned and the immigration staff wanted to confiscate his trumpet on entry, but when the player played for them to demonstrate just how quiet he played they quickly realized they were quite wrong and then allowed the player in with his instrument without any issues, they just asked him to be respectful.

I purchased a really inexpensive pocket trumpet for a business trip I was to take to Saudi Arabia, with the anticipation that it may be confiscated. And so it was. Three times. Each time the individual taking the horn took it to their supervisor and each time the supervisor asked me kindly my intent in bringing the horn. I would then show the supervisor my Yamaha silent mute, then explained, my intent was only to practice the horn in my hotel room with the silencer intact so no one would be able to hear me. The supervisor for each occasion appreciated my discussion and in each case, returned the horn to me.

It is however a sad state of affairs when a restrictive government to many liberties such as Saudi Arabia will yield to reasoning, but Disney will not.

Niner, your thought about letting next of kin figure out what to do with oneโ€™s stuff after death is something I frequently consider.

My jazz trio was hired to play a "life celebration" for a local trumpet player who passed away. Among his horns was his treasured CG Benge Trumpet. That trumpet never left his side. Towards the end of life, when he needed surgery, the horn when with him into the OR. The family mentioned it was being buried with him. Since that gig, my wife jokes that I'm taking my horns with me.

Ah Mike, my wife already knows my ashes go into my original Olds Recording.

Ideally, I want to outline the head in the first A section, but do this in a lower register where I can be a little more expressive. This is not a huge deal, but when I try to play an improv solo in the second A (and ๐Ÿ˜Ž sections, the changes catch me out.

tj, don't be so rough on yourself. Listen again to Tills solo in the recording I posted above. His solo rides so close to the written head, with a bit of weaving of some now notes and time, but remains more with the head then with improv. Give that technique a try. It will give your sound confidence and take the stress out of the performance.

Since I never heard of it, I presume "willow back extract" is some sort of new code-speak for some sort of cannabanoid. To my knowledge I am the only person I know that has no experience base in this.

Willow bark extract is actually a natural salicylic derivative from the willow tree. It is a highly effective agent in this class of analgesics for back pain. It is typically sold in Natural Food stores.

Many people collect cheap junk that they will never play to any extent. Instead of applying that money to one good trumpet, they have 10 wall hangers instead.

I have may good trumpets 3 over $3,000 another that currently sells fo $12,400 on sale (40% off) and I play all of them.

And when I play them they are truly "off the wall!"

@scottfsmith said in Dr. GO? My back's been bothering me...:

Bringing this back to trumpets .. do trumpet players have relatively more back problems? I was moaning to my trumpet teacher about my back problems and he moaned back about his, and then I got thinking my recent back problems started when I got more serious about the trumpet a few years ago. The PT told me my lower back is too tense, and playing trumpet to get out the high notes also causes that to happen..

      Any connection here?

A study out of North Texas State reports the overall complaint of lower back pain in trumpet players is 17.5%. There are many publications of Chronic Lower Back Pain in the general (non-musician population), and the most referenced is at 20%. So by an indirect comparison between two separate studies, there is really no evidence for Chronic Low Back Pain to be significantly prevalent in trumpet players over the general population. Here is the reference Table from that article from North Texas State, published in Medical Problems in the Performing Arts, 17:93-98;2002:

      9fb0719b-6880-43db-aac6-e3a9d2d17460-image.png

A German study (Clin Rheumatol (2015) 34:965โ€“973) parallels these findings; with a lower risk of back pain among trumpet players than other musicians; however in trumpet players, that study showed a 2.5-fold higher association of pain in the teeth/jaw for brass players.

And then it got into a buzzing debate. Then it got into a strange twist about technical vocabulary and scientifically focused explanation as opposed to simple explanations.

It did go in that direction as buzzing is at the beginning end of the physics of the trumpet. Why the debate, I do not understand. There are many ways to energize the air in the trumpet, and what ever flow technique is used to achieve this, more power to them. There is no "one way is better than another" so to me there is no debate. I just wanted to clarify there is more than one way to start the physical process for all the trumpet physics that follow.

But I do hope your point is picked up upon. Hopefully this thread will work its way past the mouthpiece, down the leadpipe, through the valve casing and into the bell.

      Love Spain.

When I play this with the Ensemble, I play the Intro out front (can be found in the Real Book at the back section of extra songs)

As the only Solo Voice, I take it up an entire octave. There is a pause. Then the ensemble comes in at the A section. Very efffective!

It's not just my back though. After the Viagra you sent me I developed carpal-tunnel syndrome.

      Vulgano Brother and Dr.Go,
... Certainly if allowed to advance, the carpal tunnel syndrome would adversely affect his trumpet playing to the point that Clark Studies would no longer be possible to play.

Not to mention the vision loss due to the overriding affliction!

The tech that used to look after my horn back when things were normal, and he advised me to not use a silver polish cloth as they remove some silver every time you use them, so I have only used microfiber cloths on all my horns.

GeorgeB, you are correct. I prefer the sodium bicarb bath, but the wipe down is not a daily thing but rather once a month. I figure there is enough silver plating to endure that frequency.
