@Bob-Pixley said in How Do You Give the Audience a Sonic Experience?:

Dynamics. Make the soft sections really soft and the loud parts really LOUD! Contrast is your ally for keeping the music interesting. Of course, playing well is a given, and yes, if you look like you're glad to be there and are having fun, the audience will respond.

I so agree. This is essential. The power of dynamics (especially playing softer) really brings the audiences' ears into understanding the musicality behind the performance.

    • RE: Mental health among professional musicians

From a personal (non-evidence based) perspective, as a primary care physician that practices in a challenging environment with a paucity of mental health professionals I have a high volume of patients in my medical practice that I am the primary medical provider that manages their mental health. I would even venture to say, that about a third of my practice involves managing mental health diagnoses. So of my entire panel of patients I would say I manage the mental health in about 300 patients. Of all those patients, I know of only one musician that I manage with the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. So from my perspective, musicians are in a clear minority of the patients that I manage for mental heath diagnoses.

    • RE: Medical Aspects and Risks of Playing the Trumpet

@curlydoc said in Medical Aspects and Risks of Playing the Trumpet:

@dr-go Thursday, I had a 9 by 30 mm stone removed by ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy. Stents were left in the ureter. Post-op has been painful with frequent bladder spasms as I pass gravel. Trumpet playing aggravates the spasms. Any recommendations?

Try Pyridium 200 mg tid prn prior to playing, assuming you do not wear contact lenses. It will discolor lenses.

Mike. I got my Getzen Eterna Flugelhorn at Sam Ash as well in the 1970's. Very easy to work with them and had no trouble getting the exact horn I wanted.

I haven’t your level in trumpet playing but have already five implants inside my mouth... and never had any problem with them! After each surgery one week without any playing followed by one week of gradual recovery and voila…

Never thought dental implants would effect voila playing! Unless you have a nervous tick and chew on the bow, just sayin.

Flugelgirl, interesting that we posted at the same time. Actually you were about 10 seconds ahead of me. So I do sound a bit repetitive to your post but I totally agree with you. Great minds, right?

@GeorgeB said in How many of you taught yourself to play?:

But age did change things for me and there were a few problems that a local semi-pro friend of mine was able to help me with.

Was it age or overuse? I ask this as I have notice aging as a benefit in that experience has provided more keen insight as to how to maintain my steady progress. There was a time I felt aging may have been a feature, then I found through practice and getting help from other trumpet players (many of which are teachers) it was more an efficiency issue.... and wallah! After correcting for inefficiencies, I was young again.

    • RE: Cataract Surgery

Intraocular pressure does increase significantly, as much as 9 - 10 mm Hg pressure in high resistance wind instruments (i.e. trumpets). In one particular trumpet player the intraocular pressure increase by 27 mm Hg! See below:

So yes, it is best to rest until healing of the tissue has been achieved (approximately 4 weeks). Good luck and when playing again, my I suggest starting back with "I Only Have Eyes for You". However if you ignore doctor's advice, perhaps playing "Under Pressure" may be more apropos.

ROWUK said "Moving air is ONLY necessary to get the lips vibrating . . "

Well, how do you get the lips to continue vibrating? Don't you need air for that, too?

No. You need oxygen, glucose and ATP to do this.
