Any oil has risk, even those sold at vap shops for "pleasure". From the American Lung Association:

Essential Oil Health Claims- Fact or Fiction?
Be cautious about broad health claims about essential oils. Scientific research on the efficacy and safety of essential oils for specific health conditions is limited and more evidence is needed. Some research even shows adverse health outcomes from essential oil use. For example, a 2022 study of 200 individuals demonstrated the negative association between the use of essential oils and cardiopulmonary health. Study participants who inhaled essential oils one hour or more each day had increased heart rate and blood pressure and a decreased lung function rate.

Aromatherapy is one of the oldest and most common uses of essential oils. Much of the research published on the benefits of aromatherapy focuses on the use of a single essential oil. However, in aromatherapy, essential oils are frequently used together. There is limited research on the combinations of essential oils, interactions between the chemicals, impacts on medications and impacts on health. It is well known that when some VOCs are combined, secondary pollutants such as formaldehyde (a known nose, throat, and lung irritant) may be produced.

Though some essential oils, such as tea tree oil, have antimicrobial properties, the benefits are minimal. Research suggests that the antimicrobial effect of essential oils could only be found during the first 30-60 min after the evaporation began. This was especially in the case of tea tree oil and means that continued use or diffusion for the purpose of disinfection is ineffective.

And for the comment to prevent red rot, research as quoted above disproves that theory. I have in the past diagnosed 2 patients, one 18 years old and another 21 years old with pulmonary hypertension and right sided heart failure attributed to vaping.

So I side with Rowuk. No benefit and possible risk. Please do not run valve oil down the lead pipe.

    • RE: Increase high range by 4 notes in 6 weeks?

For sure you won't get if if you don't try. I am not going to say it is impossible, but it is improbable. Again, let me reflect that you need muscle tone to do this. It takes 6 weeks to add to tone, and that is if you do it right.

Let me ask this question, would you expect a weight lifter that can press 200 lbs to lift (without a spotter) 300 lbs in 6 weeks? That is quite a demand. And to do this without straining or pulling muscle is the other risk that must be balanced. If the 6 week goal was to get to 225 lb, then a much higher chance of achieving this would be seen.

So can you get a solid D range to an G in 6 weeks? That is an audacious goal. I do believe the E can be achieved, and perhaps the F, but another whole step to G is quite a task to achieve in 6 weeks, based on the training of muscle to support such a demand in such a short time.

To say it is impossible, I cannot go there. Here is what I suggest doing. Try to find the slurring studies of Cat Anderson and start working on these. Also, in between practice, take your mouthpiece and play it into a hand towel. Do this a half hour, twice a day. For the majority of the time (75%), take you mouthpiece towel range to that C. Then the additional time, start working the mouthpiece towel to above the C.

The reason for doing this is to train your lips to perform at a resistance much greater than you will feel when you do this with the horn. In so doing you will not only develop strength, but also the feeling of not having to push so hared once you remove that resistance (going back to the horn). This also trains you to RELAX once you are back to your horn with more muscle strength. RELAXING is just as important to prevent you from intuitively straining to put additional force you really don't need, and will only serve to close off your airflow.

So good luck and do keep us updated.

I learned a lot from Robin.... and circular breath to name a few.

Clarification: The circle of breath (circular breath) which was an excellent Rowuk (Robin) topic is not the same thing as circular breathing which has been a topic that I (Dr GO) have detailed on TM and more recently here on TB. Just to make sure some people reading this will not become confused with these terms.

A great axe to handle. So versatile and always with an amazing tone.... that crosses both jazz and classical genres. Not sure how this horn does it, but it does.

I have been subbing for a good friend that is recovering from Open Heart surgery and stepping out of my jazz mode, have been playing multiple rock concerts with his band "Bucket List Players". Here is a video caught by a concert goer where we were playing at a community city sponsored outdoor concert: Here we are caught playing "Mustang Sally"

While known as producing a dark sound, it can light up a room as well (as evidenced in Dizzy Gillespie's playing). Here is that 1946 Committee pictured above lighting up an original song, Aliyah, written by our Sax Player, Jack Novotny:

5 years later. Playing with my Big Band (well technically Eddies) to celebrate women jazz singers. If in the Dayton area, come out and give a hear to some great Dayton/Cincinnati area women jazz artists.

Last December I had pneumonia and did not play for about three weeks. I followed "rehabilitation" routine for about a week and was soon back to where I was prior to the pneumonia.

Absolutely. As a clarification, building the muscle from scratch takes time, but once your there, getting it back does not take nearly as long. This is because in the prior state, you already developed the "motor units". Then it's just getting back the coordination of "muscle memory".

Update. While I’m still convinced I won’t gain the G in time to be able to play it well enough, or reliably enough, to perform it in the show, I am making more progress than I expected. I can, at least, hit it occasionally. Something I couldn’t do at all when I made the original post. And when I do get it, it’s a real note that I can hold for 8 or more beats, not just a weak squeak. There’s hope for this old man yet.

I knew you would work toward achieving this goal. I know you will own that G withing the next couple of months. Great Work Rapier232! Proud of you!

First of all, if ordering that third valve, make sure you get it for the LA (not Fulerton) production Recordings. I own both and it is very clear the valves and casings are very different and changed over the production years.

Doc Severinsen; Jon Faddis; James Morrison; Conte and Pete Candoli; Lew Soloff

These are huge omissions. I know of two others that will never make the list as many do not respect their originality or music, but I would include Herb Alpert and Chris Botti as well. AND technically proficient above the all (albeit not as prolific in the commercial productivity world) there is also Alan Vizzutti.

AND just imagine the how much of a giant Roy Hargrove would have become if not for his untimely end on this spiritual plane.
