Indiana University. I know Bill Adam (teacher to Chris Botti and Randy Brecker) are no longer there, but their music program still has an amazing reputation.

    • 2019 Jazz Festivals

Any members playing Jazz Festivals are encouraged to let us all know. If in the area, this may get our members to come out and support our TB family.

AND by coincidence, The Eddie Brookshire Quintet will be playing the Dayton Jazz Festival on Sunday, June 9th at the brand new Levitt Pavilion right in the heart of Dayton, across the street from the Dayton Convention Center and on the grounds of the Crowne Plaza. We start at 7:30 pm.

      @moshe 😁 I took a moment to get it too - a few seconds, but then again, I'm only 62 🤣

I am 63 and got it right away, probably because I FEEL LIKE A MILLION and am now in early retirement!!!!

      VINTAGE HORN EYE CANDY?

      I don't see it.

IF you look real close, you should see a bugle.

I thought the purpose of the picture is to eye Candy. That is her name, right?

      Eye?... don't know for sure.

Perhaps you're having a hard time visualizing.

To what are you referring to by hard?

....If you are an expert yourself, state your qualifications.

My qualifications: I arranged this song written by our band leader on our first CD. There are ONLY two horns, a trumpet and tenor. The harmonies I arranged fattened the horn lines up so it sounds like more. The trumpet part hangs above staff about 45% of the written part.
I submit for proof of high note qualifications:

      Minor Blues:

How do I do it? Here is the secret. I practice.... A LOT!

PS: This recording was performed on my Olds Recording... which has much resistance in this upper register. Not the best piece of equipment for the job in sustained upper register work. I did have assistance here with the Jettone Studio B. That helped!
Other soloists: Jack Novotny - Tenor Sax; Kenny Drew Jr - Piano

The day after. Here is a post of one of the songs the quintet played backing up the vocalist Brenda Flowers. I decided to bring out my Harrelson on this day as we had a two set with rather challenging ranges to play. This song was to be played by the sax player but at the last minute he punted the song over to me due to the break neck tempo. So here I am, unrehearsed, as it was "Just One of Those Things":

    • RE: Help! I need to hit that high note!

Practice, practice, practice. This is why and here are the tasks to achieve:

      1. Build lip muscle for CONTROL. This assures adequate vibration to "sing" the notes
      2. Build chest and abdominal muscle to support the note (so you don't pinch from the upper airway; this closes it off)
Do these two major things and the third ESSENTIAL component follows:
      3. RELAX. Do not pinch off the airway that you lower body muscles support and that the lips control.

In my case, I can play higher by playing softer. It's harder to play the same high note at blastissimo.

I do not find this to be the case for me. Playing the high note at higher volume actually allows me to relax my embouchure over playing softy. Less resistance leads to easier production of the sound.

A little too much coffee, Doc?
      Haha, just kidding. SMOKIN'!!

The weather was not my friend. My music was blowing all around and I could not get my clips to work at such short notice (when the sax player told me I was playing the lines). So I just "blew it off" and went without the music. Then the wind took my fingers and the rest is history.

OR we could have TB's Medical Moderator give out free lip enhancing anabolic steroids for the first 69,870 NEW members. We will be to 70,000 in a week, just wait and see.

at the end of January started Skype lessons with Bruce Haag, a long time student of Claude Gordon, who has worked with many older comeback players (I’m 62) like myself.

Over the last 3 months I’ve diligently followed Bruce’s lesson plans and my workable range is up to a high C. Not an earth shattering improvement...

Bruce Haag is amazing. I know him personally and he sold me my current Kanstal flugelhorn. He was Elvis Presley's trumpet player in Vegas. ALSO earth shattering is NEVER an experience I ever had. Bruce will teach you a natural earth revolving way to improve. Stick with Bruce. You will continue to develop.

    • RE: So, how's your Fourth?

Mowed the lawn, swept the patios and pulled weeds. But have plans for late afternoon to smoke burgers, brats and hot dogs in my Big Green Egg. Then the top goes off of my Jeep and we put the dog in the car and head out to Englewood for fireworks. No playing today. Just relaxation with the Missus and Man's Best Friend. One version of an American Celebration.

Happy 4th of July from one Gary to another!

Yes. I know for a fact he does, and he on occasion circulates onto this site to observe the discussion.
