Arban's has lots of good stuff in it. I believe that Tom Hooten did a revision of Arban's. It would be worth looking into purchasing that edition.

@flugelgirl I guess I'm a comeback player; I had a Strad when I was a student ... I didn't like the tone I got on it, so I'm trying out different vintage corners to see which sounds best for me. I've had an Ambassador, a Conn 80A, and a Getzen Super Deluxe. I really think I'm bonding with the 1923 80A, I haven't tried a 20A, but everything is a bit of a consideration. I sound similar on all of these horns, though there are on obviously some differences ... the 80A sounds broader and has more in the low frequency of the horn resonating, and I love it. I never loved my Strad this much. I don't know what I'll be able to use the horns for yet, or if I'll just be playing to myself. The Getzen doesn't have the low end, it's more focused sounding, but has a certain zing to it.I ordered an Olds Special trumpet, as these seen to be broadly regarded well, and we'll see how I sound on it. I guess I would play a Strad if it were one magical horn that I felt an attachment to.

Modern long shank and modern short shank cornet mouthpieces have the same shank taper and should have the same insertion depth. I don’t know why they shouldn’t interchange with good results as well as any other mouthpieces do. Some mouthpieces work with a given cornet, while others don’t, regardless of the shank length.

Bach and Yahama have different tapers that I just noticed. Bacg goes into the shank further. Not arguing with you Dale. The short and long shank yamaha go into the shank the same distance.

The Yahama is close to an old Conn Wonder I have but not exact.

So I guess (as Fluglegirl said) that the Yahama doesn't belong into my Bach.

Yeah, I said they should have the same insertion depth. Some of them don’t, for sure. I have a newer Wick that has a really shallow insertion, a much older Wick that inserts the “normal” amount, and all the Schilkes I’ve used insert too far. So that part of the equation is a variable for sure. That’s more a function of the mouthpiece design than the horn, though.

The old Conn “Precision” short shank cornet mouthpieces aren’t anything like modern short shank mouthpieces. They are basically an earlier version of Conn’s “Improved Precision” mouthpieces, and had a slightly different shank taper. Here’s a comparison of mouthpiece lengths. Left to right - newer Conn 4 Improved Precision mouthpiece, old Conn 4 Precision short shank, Wick 4B short shank.

I am really into Bousquet's Studies. Have spent about 6 weeks on them. They are not the hardest studies out there. That honor (for me) might go to Saint Jacome's 12 Grand Artistic Studies.

But I believe if you wanted to you could work on them for months and months. They contain everything. Any of numbers of different time signatures, wierd metering, Everything from Key of C to 5 flats or 5 sharps. Accidentals all over the place. Lots of Turns, mordents, and grace notes. Just love them. And the beauty is written in 1851. Just amazing etudes (to me)

@Bob-Pixley I'm all about old school. My Holton cornet has some pretty cool art-deco engraving, but can't really see it after the raw brass tarnishes at all. She did a wonderful job!

Chase would use 123 for high A.

      Isn't that the nineteenth harmonic? (18th is G#, 20th is A#). Interesting.

Wonder whether the deciding factor in this choice is pitch, timbre, or testosterone.

For me it's convince. Using just one finger, and a very flexible one at that makes an otherwise temperamental note to sound so much easier to play. Especially if playing in a rapidly passing phrase.

@adc are you talking about waxing the inside of your horn? I used to own a couple horns that were raw brass, and I would wipe them down with a little turtle wax spray to keep them from getting tarnished after cleaning them. I never considered waxing the inside. I suppose one could spray a little wax on a lead pipe swab and do this rather easily. Could possibly eliminate red rot?

Okay. I like bottom sprung valves. So much less complicated. I can switch them out for the feel I like. And when putting the valves back in the casings, there's no way to get them turned in the wrong direction. Very simple system that works great, for me. My 80A always gets admiring looks from the trumpet playing crowd and they love the feel of the valves when they try it.

I would have given my 80A to a needy school kid but oiling the valves is to hard. Gluing the corks to the top of the piston helps. But I personally think its the dumbest idea Conn ever came up with. Hint: It is no longer used and no onelse uses it. Once in a blue moon I can change top springs out in about 5 minutes. But again..just me. Almost ever old cornet IO have bought (a bunch) immediately gets Yamaha springs

      That horn is mighty pretty!!!!!

Cool. Give it to me. I have no problem with the valves. ☺
