I love hiking old railroad lines. Below Harrisburg there is a freight line called the Enola it had no grades more than 1% it is 36 miles long. I hiked it many times. I will dig some pics.

Mouthpieces
I currently use a Yahama 11C4. I use a short shank for my old vintage horns before 1920 and for my newer ones newer than 1940 my long shank.
Theoretically my two Conn 36A's came with the conn short shank (I believe). So I tried the short shank. But when I went to the long shank..wow.. what a great bright sound. I normally like a dark sound but for this horn, bright is good.
This is an amazing horn!!

RE: New Player has entered the Game
Welcome. Maybe consider a Cornet. They are easier to play and I believe more popular in Europe.

RE: Saint Jacome's
@Kehaulani Yea..I think Williams is great. I really do think that every section of Saint Jacomes is more difficult than the equivalent Arban's section. I am not Gods gift to music but I can pick any piece in Arbans and play it reasonably well (at my skill level). Believe it or not they come back after 50+ years. St Jacomes stuff just does not "flow". I just can't do that with Jacome (that I did back in the day.)
Again just me.

Saint Jacome's
Anyone working or have worked in it. Back in the Day I started on it after Arbans (my teacher's choice). I did not get very far. So along with other things I started on it again. I set a goal of getting through the "Twelve Grand Artistic Studies" done by the end of Summer. Not only are they hard and require endurance..they don't "flow". So it requires mega repeating.

RE: Vintage Horn Eye Candy
Amazing collection Bob!! I have played three different Directors (Leadpipe going into the 1st valve). The only other cornets that played equally bad were Ambassadors . Granted they are not directors!!
I am a conn nut (like you). My 1909 and 1911 (perfected wonder) play really well. The 1911 is a small bore and is very sweet. My 1908 Wonderphone is amazing it actually plays bit better than my '51 36A. I shake my head and wonder how this is possiple. Only my strad plays better than my Wonderphone.
I have had a couple '70's Conns made in Japan (16A???) They play amazingly well.

RE: Strad vs Zeno/Neo
@FranklinD Yea..sorry I have an 11C4 shory and an 11C4 long.
And I meant to say "MP" (mouthpiece) not "MB". I had an 80A..I didn't care for it. Maybe bc of the large bore.

Strad vs Zeno/Neo
After much deliberation I finally bought a 184G Silver Strad Cornet. Did not do enough research though to realize the bell is brass/gold. Supposedly a richer sound. Glad it did have that.
Initially the horn was "harder" to play as well as my old Conns (Im a Conn fanboy). But I do like it. It came with a deep cup MB (Bach 6A) i am using my 14C3 Yahaha. I bought a 14E3 (deeepeer cup) but I still like the Yahama. It is fairly Bright and really projects. I do prefer darker. But since it I am in a band it is probably needed. I may pllay around by adding a pad in each valve to misalign the valves and make it slot less.
I paid 1200 including tak and shipping. It has a few dents and the bell was repaired. But I'll take the $2100 savings. Anyone else have one?

RE: Mouthpiece recommendations for young beginners
@Kehaulani
It seemed it was close to a bach 8 1/2Cbut for me played a bit better. Its all I use now. I have a short shank and medium shank one. -
RE: Mouthpiece recommendations for young beginners
@Bob-Pixley
Yea thats what I (and everyone else ) played back in the day (10 1/2 C). Grabs high notes but I found an 8 1/2 C better and finally went to a Yam 11C4 -

RE: Clarke’s Technical Studies Redux
has anyone here used Saint Jacomes? I have done some. My music teacher I don't think uses it so I don't do much of it.
