I would go with the Berp #1. I use that on all my horns even my oldest ones. It works fine on all mine. I would go with than and if its too light for the 1999 so be it. Disclaimer..if the 1999 is the one you play most than buy the #2.

    • RE: Saint Jacome's

I am really into Bousquet's Studies. Have spent about 6 weeks on them. They are not the hardest studies out there. That honor (for me) might go to Saint Jacome's 12 Grand Artistic Studies.

But I believe if you wanted to you could work on them for months and months. They contain everything. Any of numbers of different time signatures, wierd metering, Everything from Key of C to 5 flats or 5 sharps. Accidentals all over the place. Lots of Turns, mordents, and grace notes. Just love them. And the beauty is written in 1851. Just amazing etudes (to me)

I love the Berp. Fast and long lasting. Lasts a week...about 6 hours of rather fast music. I'm 100% sold. Thanks Flugelgirl!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Modern long shank and modern short shank cornet mouthpieces have the same shank taper and should have the same insertion depth. I don’t know why they shouldn’t interchange with good results as well as any other mouthpieces do. Some mouthpieces work with a given cornet, while others don’t, regardless of the shank length.

Bach and Yahama have different tapers that I just noticed. Bacg goes into the shank further. Not arguing with you Dale. The short and long shank yamaha go into the shank the same distance.

The Yahama is close to an old Conn Wonder I have but not exact.

So I guess (as Fluglegirl said) that the Yahama doesn't belong into my Bach.

Well, all of the current Bach 184s we get in stock are built for long shank, come with a long shank, and will not accept a short shank.

Yea..understand. But it does "fit" and it plays fine (for me)

I used to play all of my cornets, even the old ones, with the long shank. Settled on Yamaha 11C4. I really didn't know any better. Then I went to the Yamaha 11C4 short. They sent a mid length 11E4 . I kept it but then bought and got the 11C4short. . Shortly thereafter started using it for some other horns. And as mentioned went to the 11C4Short for the 184G Strad. It seems that I play a bit "cleaner with the mid length 11E4 on the strad.

Totally nuts to most of you and even me. But I am not a professional so it doesn't really matter...lol

I have found that switching to a short shank MP for my cornets. Helps delay spit collecting on the bore of the MP. And just for the fun of it I coated the inside of it with Turtle Wax Hybred Ceramic Spray Coating. It appears to help. I will have to do a more thorough comparison. At some point I may put it on the valve pistons and bore of one of my cheap cornets. My though is it may shed water.

I got the thickest formulation and it is REALLY think. (Thicker than Hetmans's #3 or Monster's thickest, IMO.) It works well, but the action is pretty slow. However, I also hear they reformulated shortly thereafter and the newer BERPs might be faster.

Well the #3 is 5.6 cSts..that's thick. Youcan't expect fact action with thick oil.

Got my BERP. I like it. Valve action is great. I am going to clean and oil my vintage Cornets (12 of them) in the near future!!

On flugelgirl's say so I ordered 8 oz of the #1. For comparison the Blue Juice is 1.99 cSt. This #1 is 2.2 cSt. I use BJ bc it seems to keep my horn the cleanest. But I have any number of old horns and some of them don't get played often. If flugelgirl is correct and residue is minimal with this horn..its worth a try. Thank you flugelgirl!!!

George..You only go around once. You should be seen by a major Medical Center. Preferably one that teaches. I am very fortunate to have Penn State Hershey Medical Center 20 minutes away. We have used them for 50 years..My primary care physician is from there.

Both the wife and I have had serious issues where we used the facilities. It can make a difference.
      Good Luck!!!

Same "wrap" as my 1955 Director. Obviously 2 or 3 steps above mine. And I know I said this (wink). But it was (for me) the worst horn out of dozens I played. And I bought another one bc it was so cheap. I thought, "it can't be as bad as my first on" - it was.

But I have to say that I played first chair 2 years in HS and 2 years in college..lol

The horn above is a true gem???? -Beautiful. Just curious how it plays? Both of mine were bad below staf. That could be a function of Metal and maybe bracing? Does this one have bottom springs?

And to think that when I started playing I could have had a Concert Grand. We could have afforded it. And now I have Two of them 😉

First my layoff was 51 years. I was referring to the OP's mom. It must have been late my friend!!

    • RE: Covid-19 Closing Down Music Venues

In PA 2/3 of the cases are nursing homes. And all things being equal 80% are those are over. 60. I take the disease seriously. But almost every single case involves an underlying health issue even under 20 years old. In Pa and most other states if a person dies and has the virus its attributed to COVID-19.

I am 74..yes old..I run....and my doc has said I am one of the healthiest folks at the age of 70.

So I now go against the grain. I wear a mask when I go shopping to protect others. This country can not stay locked down tis way. You can see what is happening. Take responsibility for yourself.
