has anyone here used Saint Jacomes? I have done some. My music teacher I don't think uses it so I don't do much of it.

RE: Clarke’s Technical Studies Redux
We could debate the best books,,Arban, Saint Jacome, Schlossberg, Williams, Glantz, Hering. Probably any one of these would be all you need when you reach a certain level (no I never will be there..lol)
But the Clarke series: "Elementary Studies", "Characteristic Studies", "Technical Studies", and maybe the all around best for daily maintenance "Setting up Drills" are worth a second look.
I have so many books I could literally start at Arbans and go through them all just once and could not live long enough to finish.
I really do love though playing Arban with my oldest horns. You gotta wonder how well the best players of the day (1870's) managed with the quality of the valves/lubricant then.

RE: Difference between trumpet and cornet
Great discussion and thank you so much as usual Trumpetsplus. BTW the Capri Cornet I bought from you (I believe it was you). Was a superb horn. Ultimately though I drifted to older cornet horns..several conns pre-1912, a 1898 Boosey.Fuchs, a 1916 York. A 50's Committee, Conn 36A and King Master. A actually gave the Capri to a very very accomplished 10th grader. She is in love with the horn!!!
The pre 40's 50's horns all have the Crook and play very Dark (which I love). The Committee, Conn and King are a bit lighter but have a "better sound/intonation. All time favorite is the Conn 36A Concert Grand. I don't think that It will be possible for me to find a better one. I have played a Strad. The King Master is a close second. My Music teacher likes the Committee and I loaned him my extra. He prefers it over his Strad on a gig where he needs a cornet.
Curious as to why Cornets kept getting brighter over the century+. Can't be the Shepherds Crook bc the Cpri has that. The 38A, Committee and King do not have the Crook

I've owned 4 Ambassadors, 3 trumpets and one cornet. They are great student horns, but just so-so for higher level playing. I did play one (a 1950s trumpet) in a big band for a few years and it worked pretty well, so they probably do have a place in jazz, swing, and similar types of settings. Legit music, nope.
I played several Ambassadors in the last few years. The King 602? was superior IMHO.Did you ever play a Conn 36A Cornet?

@Richard-III

@adc I have the Master and the Super 20. They look almost identical in all essential ways. But, outside of some decorative brace differences and some chrome places, the only really structure difference is that the slide on the third valve has the adjustment closer to the valve block on the Super 20 than the Master. The Master seems slightly mellower to my not great musical and half deaf ear but maybe it's because it doesn't have the marginal bling that makes it seem that way. Obviously the horns are out of the same design mold.
I think the Master is a bit brighter than the Conn 36A. And actually I like darker better so it would seem like I should like the 36A. But the Master just "feels right" Ank its probably a bit better in a band than the 36A.

RE: Favorite Cornet
@Niner I keep coming back to my King Master. It sounds and feels right. Through the last 2+ years, I have had many "favorites" but its unlikely I will ever find a better one. I really likde my Conn 19A (Japan). Cheap horn but very dark and mellow.

@adc The Studio trumpets are amazing, too... I scored one two years back, a total closet queen that probably had never been played before... original case, original #3 mouthpiece, original wrapping, original paperwork... $150 on ebay... my #1 horn for anything but big band.
Wow..nice!

RE: Favorite Cornet
Scored a Olds '61 Studio last week. $200 including shipping. Plays like a dream. No doubt why it was called "Studio"

@Niner
Nice!! Didn't think they made that adjustment mechanism after the factory burned down in 1910. Or on the 80AI have a 1908 Perfected Wonder with that mechanism totally intact. You rarely see that.

RE: Favorite Cornet
Bought a '51 Conn 36A Concert Grand. Its Absolute mint. Looks like it was just made. Seller told me a woman's deceased father had it and really took care of it. I got it for $250 plus shipping. I tried to send the guy another $150. He wouldn't take it.
You won't see one like this for any amount. I can't believe its mine!!!

RE: So how did you start out to learn the trumpet?
I was in 5th grade. My dad wanted me to play a baritone. I wanted no parts of it. I started on a cheap Conn Director. Played on that horn for 10 years. Played first chair 2 years in HS and County/District band. Two years first chair in college. Don't let anyone tell you that you cn't do well with a cheap horn.
My H.S. GF dumped me my 3rd year of college. Stopped playing the horn for 50 years..lol.

Alternate (lack of) fingering above High C
Since high D and F can be played open, I assume A and maybe B can be played open? I was just amazed that high C,D,E,F, G are all open.

RE: Waxing inside of MP
I use NuFinsh but it doesn't matter what you use. The other thing I do is wax my horn and after a couple more waxings there is enough wax residue on the micro fiber rag that I wipe the horn off with it after each use. You will be surprised....It keeps getting better.

Waxing inside of MP
Using q-tips I waxed the inside of my cornet MP in the throat and backbore. Reason..especially cornet mp's ..spit clings to the inside and causes a bit of "spitty" sound. Waxing does a great job of minimizing this.
