      Time for a Driveway Concert!

(please note this is an archived concert from FB but I definitely wanted to share here in case you didn't see it!)

As I was walking the dogs a few days ago I realized my driveway is very wide and would make a great place for an outdoor session. Plenty of room to be very far apart and still play together! I have played a few times for our neighborhood solo as well as a social distancing parade and they are excited for the prospect of a concert!

We’d love for you to tune in live and hang with us for a few minutes! We’ll even have some special surprises lined up for intermission and other times!

We will have a virtual tip jar available as my friends that are playing have been without any means of income since Covid started. Any donations will be graciously accepted.

      Virtual tip Jar:
      https://venmo.com/Trent-Austin-2
      paypal.me/AustinCustomBrass

      TA: Tpt/Flugel
      Jackie Myers: Piano
      Jason Emmond: Bass
      Jim Lower: Percussion

Okay it might not be Carnegie Hall but a stage is a stage 😎 A few performance notes:

it was the first time running sound this elaborate outside and into an interface so the mix isn't totally spot on but we'll get it next time! The way I captured sound into an interface for a live concert mix is worth a mini-lesson in itself!

      Equipment:
I'm using my Gen II Adams A1 trumpet with TAZ-CS mouthpiece as well as my Olds Clark Terry Model Flugelhorn with Clark's old mouthpiece (and my Ta-1 rim)

My trusty shop assistant and pal Kyle Lambert sat in a few times on the show (yes his mic wasn't turned on totally)

Our goofy intermission songs with my wife are part of a series we have been doing for friends on my personal FB page entitled Quarantine with the Austins! I hope you enjoy it!

Stay tuned for another one of these in the future it was very fun!

The tip jar is still active (and the tips go to my band who have been out of work... just put in the comments tip jar or Driveway)

      Thank you!

I have a Gard leather cornet bag. It’s just the thing when all you need is a cornet, a couple mouthpieces, a bottle of valve oil, glasses, etc. Not much room for anything larger in the side pocket, though, and it only fits a short cornet, but it’s very protective with an internal suspension/padding system. Stylish, too...😉

That could make a great topic in the medical concerns forum...the effects of overuse of smoking/drugs/alcohol in terms that relate to trumpet playing.

      A few of the reasons;

It's in the environment. Its being used by musicians that are admired Its addicting It's a means to decompress after a show.

@tmd They older ones are in tune once you pull out the slide a bit. I'm happy to do that in order to keep the classic tone.

Thanks Bill. Just to clarify, low notes on my original Harmon mute are very sharp (especially low G and low F#). Back in the day, it took a lot of effort to get those notes out. With my Harmon Type B, those notes are very much in tune.

Saw the facebook entry. Lose the heavy caps and replace the leadpipe and receiver and the horn would be well on its way to at least being in tune. This problem pops up even with professional trumpets. Monke rotary Bb and C trumpets occasionally had the same issue. The G on my natural trumpet is "naturally a bit high". Not quite this much, but it does require attention on a regular basis.

Nice comparison Trent. My experience with the tuning bell Schilkes is fine up to mezzoforte after which the transition to loud is much less controllable than bells with braces. The brilliance just takes off - which is fine for big band jazz or combo work, but in a classical setting becomes a liability. Countless tests with sound posts did not solve my problem.

I liked the original B1 bell and the Kanstul Benge copy best. It had the right combination of core and halo for my ears. The other three were very good but not as balanced in tone/core. I have a student with a tuning bell Schilke B1, B6 and a modified C. The B1 and C trumpets have the best balance and playing duets has sum and difference tones bouncing all over the practice room.

For my tuning Bell Bach 229H, I developed a brace for tuning slide bells. That gave me the response advantage of a brace and the intonation advantage of the tuning bell.

If I owned that horn, it would also be a keeper. It is so much different than everything else and thus broadens the palette of colors that I could offer.

I have heard of them, but never seen one live or had the opportunity to play one. Sounds like a cool horn. Looks sort of Monette-y.

@J-Jericho Thanks! I use these two horns (the Schilke and Yamaha) fairly often as they are both in my personal quiver of instruments. In fact I used the B1-L last night on my wedding band gig!

Thanks for checking out the videos!

Some trumpets, however, are always going to sound "bright" according to their nature, regardless of the player. For example -- I had a H.N. White king Liberty in high school. That thing was a peashooter for sure, and my band director was of the "dark, round sound" persuasion, so he would never let me play it.
