Has any celebrity sung the National Anthem as written?

There's a BIG difference in Lady Gags's interpretation and many others. Her's, while modern, was respectful, at the same time modern with a use of contemporary harmonies and rhythms. It was emotional as a means of singing tribute to those fallen, yet avoided the hot-dogging, melismas of many of her predecessors.

@kehaulani I agree - classy and very well done. No complaints, especially compared to some renditions.

Roseanne Barr's performance was such a disgrace. Whoever thought that she would make a good fit for that job had another thing coming.

I am not a US citizen so maybe my opinion doesn't count, but I agree with kehaulani. I have heard many versions over the years ( some pretty horrid ) and I really felt Lady Gaga's is one of the best. So much heartfelt emotion and from a gal with a voice that's the sweetest thing this side of Heaven.

Here's a good explanation of her use of more current techniques, BTW, I appreciate the effort but think it's one rehearsal short or full preparation. IMO, it could be a little more comfortable and free with the stretched musical elements.

With military bands still being mostly quarantined and only doing occasional rehearsals or video, it’s hard to get too picky about amount of rehearsal time spent. I thought they all did a great job for the inauguration. Mad props to the trumpeter who set up Garth Brooks, and to the Army Herald Trumpets - ridiculously hard to sound that good and play so in tune after sitting in the cold forever! I don’t miss that one bit!

Anyway, I prefer to enjoy Lady Gaga without analysis.

And how can you not respect a gifted singer that has a trumpet tattooed on her arm.

There’s this- he even moved some of the players, who often don’t even pay attention. Not exactly played straight, but absolutely beautifully done IMO.

This message is from a Marine Corps Colonel in Afghanistan. I think he'd be ok with Whitney and Gaga's renditions. Fingers crossed for the Super Bowl.

"So with all the kindness I can muster, I give this one piece of advice to the next pop star who is asked to sing the national anthem at a sporting event: save the vocal gymnastics and the physical gyrations for your concerts.

Just sing this song the way you were taught to sing it in kindergarten - straight up, no styling "Sing it with the constant awareness that there are soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines watching you from bases and outposts all over the world. Don't make them cringe with your self-centered ego gratification.

Sing it as if you are standing before a row of 96-year-old WWII vets wearing their Purple Hearts, Silver Stars and flag pins on their cardigans and you want them to be proud of you for honoring them and the country they love - not because you want them to think you are a superstar musician. They could see that from your costume, makeup and your entourage.

Sing 'The Star Spangled Banner' with the courtesy and humility that tells the audience that it is about America, not you.

And please not everything needs to be spunked up! We’re getting a little weary of that.

Francis Scott Key does not need any help."

If you want it sung conservatively, get a conservative singer. If you want it done pop--ish, get a pop singer. But don't get a pop singer, expect a conservative rendition, then bitch because it's not.
