Hi - with Christmas coming up I am being asked if I would books about trumpets - and I was wondering if anyone would have a suggestion for a history of Trumpets book?

This is a very good one, and I think they can still be found.

Acoustically... I believe he is looking for non-fiction.

What may be a bit nicer than a book would be Wynton Marsalis' dvd on History Of The Trumpet. I rented it not too long ago and found it extremely interesting. I'm thinking about buying it.

I have his book Moving to Higher Ground. Very good. More about blues and jazz theory, not so much about the trumpet.

Ummm, anybody ever notice my avatar?

full disclosure though - I'm planning a second edition that will be about 20% larger, hopefully this spring.

                    Can you elaborate a little?

I think Ron was referring to his book, available at Amazon.

Might want to wait for that second edition, though.

Guess that would exclude trumpets with rotary valves.

Rotary valve trumpets have springs, too - they just aren’t inside the valve case. ☺

Some do, some are strung like French horn rotors, some have mechanical linkage without springs. Depends on age/ manufacturer 😊

Don’t they all have a spring of some sort to return the valve?

@Dale-Proctor just between the paddles, not on the rotors themselves - more like springs on a trigger mechanism. When you said rotor springs it brought clockwork rotor springs to mind - those things are so weird! Key change rotors on some of the old Conn trumpets actually have a spring inside the rotor casing, on top of the spindle.

Yes, I have a rotary valve cornet, and there are return springs. Not on the valves themselves, but springs are involved in returning the valve to the straight through position. I was just responding to the bad joke Dr. Go was making a few posts ago.
