Trumpets Made ONLY by Their Maker

Many of the companies and craftsmen mentioned here are not capable of making a horn start-to-finish under their own roof. Harrelson, Puje, and Taylor use CarolBrass blocks, many makers use Kanstul or Anderson bells. Many fine horns are built on Getzen valves, including Del Quadro, Edwards, and early Monette. While you can debate whether or not these horns are really "handmade" (I would still argue that they are), they aren't built solely by their maker. As far as craftsmen who do bells and valves in-house and put their own name on their horns, I would limit this list to Calicchio, early Benge, Monette, New York Bach, Landress, Kanstul, Spiri, Inderbinen, Shires, Akright, Marcinkiewicz, Schagerl, Benchmark, and early Schilke. You could probably make an argument for Thane, Lawler, Possegger, and Taylor (among others) to be added to the list as well, but they outsource valve blocks. Just because a horn isn't named after its builder, or if the bell, lead pipe, and valves aren't all made in the same place doesn't make a horn less worthy. I'd rather play on a horn that takes advantage of the best building techniques available and is intelligently designed. That being said, nothing is cooler than holding an old Calicchio and hearing the old man's words, "This is my life's work. For this, I will be remembered".

One quick correction...Taylor switched from Carol valve blocks to Getzen 1-2 years ago. Too bad he stopped using Baurfiend after Adams bought them...
-
@Mr-Spock About two thirds of the horns sold under the Schagerl name are stencil horns from China, notably the Academica series.
-
Is Lawler still making horns? I thought he used Getzen valve blocks, whether or not he is still making horns.
-
@BigDub only trombones these day.

I’m also fairly certain that Inderbinen uses outsourced valve blocks. They don’t mention it on their website, but I think they still use Bauerfiend/Adams.
Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong.
PS...I would really like to try their instruments out. I’ve been waiting for somebody in America to become a dealer for years. No joking, I would schedule a quick vacation to any city in the US if somebody like ACB, Dillons, Chuck Levins, etc...started to carry Inderbinen.

Better yet, a vacation to Switzerland!!!

Wouldn’t that be nice....wish I could! But I would imagine the round trip flight plus the purchase of a horn would equal....bankruptcy!
Maybe someday. Or we could all beg Trent to become a dealer? Did somebody say petition?
-
I have a feeling Inderbinen is one of those makers who want you to show up in person and trial the prototypes before they start making your instrument. Not sure what use they would have for a dealer anywhere.
-
Inderbinden has been at NAMM - i’ve Played them there. That must mean they don’t mind selling to dealers.

I was under the impression that Schagerl made their own valves. I know they have some horns assembled in Taiwan to save on cost, but I assume that their Meister Instrumente series are entirely Austrian-made. Can anyone verify?

Yes, that is the information they have had on their web site, at least as of last year.

Well, sethoflagos a few years back ordered an Inderbinen and had it sent to Vienna where he picked it up at his hotel. The hotel, btw, had covered all the customs cost for him in advance!
