Adams Sonic or Yamaha 631G
-
I still haven't bought a flugelhorn. Does anyone have a comparison between the Adams Sonic and the Yamaha 631G? They are very close in price.
iIhad a chance to buy a Yamaha 6310Z at a very fair price but it sold before I could decide. That lead me to consider the Yamaha 8310Z or possibly the 8315G but haven't been able to try either. -
I really like the Adams flugelhorns. They play super well. I would recommend that one.
-
I would go for neither of the two. My choice was, is now and will always be the Courtois 154R. I've played many, very many flugelhorns in the last 30 years... and the one I always come back to is the Courtois.

Kanstul 1525/1526 I just love but again I may be a bit biased as from the Kanstul site:
What was really an honor in being identified as a Kanstul feartured artist is I am included with Claudio Roditi who was my trumpet teacher in my years I played in New York City. And Claudio was an Adams featured artist, but then discovered Kanstul.
I have played both and would have to say, Adams would be my second choice. I still feel the copper alloy 1525 and 1526 takes the edge over the Adams.

Well, I don't know how this would work for you but I could've bought almost any Flugelhorn I could and chose the Adams F-1. The Sonic had actually been ACB's first recommendation.

@kehaulani
That is a strong vote. Which configuration did you choose? (By the way.. I've always loved the Chet Baker quote in your signature) -
@administrator
I see you play an F1. That means a lot. -
You may find another Flugelhorn better suited to your needs. The Adams F-1 was my choice, so here was my criteria.
*I wanted a Couesnon-type sound. A Flugelhorn that would give me a sound similar to this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oF7Wx_pdWeg&list=PLfJndz0utgONWpSfdEMuW74Ajzf3WNOLG
*needed as lightweight a Flugelhorn I could find,
*and, of course, good playability and excellent workmanship.

I love my F2 - the Yamahas play like toys in comparison.
-
@flugelgirl Lots of folks in this group like the Adams flugelhorns. I will give them a try. I live in Kansas City so that makes it easier.
-
@kehaulani That's a great sound. Thanks for the info.

When I was trying flugels some years ago, I liked the Yamaha 631G over the newer lighter Yamahas after trying them all. The Adams Sonic was a little further down my list, but was not bad when I got to try it. A bit depends on the flugel sound you are after. I was lucky enough to land a Taylor Standard Flugelhorn and it gives me the sound I am after. The Yamaha 631 and the Adams Sonic are brighter. If that is the sound you are after either will be a good fit. If you are after something mellower, you might looks elsewhere.

@ca Thanks for your comments. For many years I played a Jupiter 846RL which I hear is much like the Yamaha 631. I liked the way it sounded but I'm undecided on the sound I want now.

The sound I get from my Kanstul 1526: (flugelhorn solo at 2:49)
https://soundcloud.com/user-296675506/daisyThis is a song (Daisy) written by our piano player and recorded by "The Eddie Brookshire Quintet". Keigo, the song writer, loved the pedal tone I placed at the end of the song.

@flugelgirl I tried all the Adams 3 valve flugels today (and the ACB dblr). I liked the sound and playing feel of the F3 the most. I was shocked by the large bell size on the F2 and F3.

You would be even more shocked at the bell size of the Courtois 154R. One inch larger than the Adams monsters.

I believe that Courtois makes a flugelhorn specifically for Sergei Nakariakov with a trombone-sized bell and a 4th valve.
-
@administrator That is a standard Courtois 4-valve flugel... yes, they are THAT BIG!!
