I posted earlier (year or so ago) about the effects of Mohs (4 layers) surgery on the back of my neck that seemingly resulted in nerve related issues that impacted my left cheek and lower lip. Still seems to be a problem but may be
lymph related.. Relative to kidney stones, I had one some years ago but was related to hyperparathyroidism. Surgery removed one HP and PTH tests show normal -- not trumpet related seemingly. On the other hand (sic) I have a prolapsing hemorrhoid that responds directly to lead playing.

@dr-go Only just this thread which is highly interesting to me, seeing that I'm to be released from hospital tomorrow after two weeks of treatment for pneumonia... but as regards the tin woodwinds, I think that their higher mortality rate is just due to sax and violins...

@dr-go Regular spitballs are stored in an alcoholic cleaning liquid that can do the job as well, if you use three or four new spitballs each time.

Yes, sounds like a great way to saturate the tubing without consuming greater volumes through soaking.

I learned to sit up straight, hold my right hand like it's got a tennis ball in it, and breathe like you're coughing.

For those who want to spend time and brain cells studying the minutiae, go for it. 'I'll just hit the shed with time off for Judge Judy. 😁

I get what you are saying, Wayne. I am one of those players who don't look like they are playing. I use only the tension necessary to get the job done. And if I can't hit a high note easily, I drop an octave.

Those are two good reasons for any problems you may be having, sir.
Right now I am trying to play on only 2 front teeth when my embouchure was used to much more than that, so I am now dealing with a cranky embouchure. Once I have the dental work done at least I will be playing with a new partial that hooks on to exixting teeth to keep it in place, and I am already used to that. But another change for the embouchure. Oh, well it will all work out.

With posts like this, I wonder about the REAL REASON behind asking the question. No doubt, headaches can be caused by MANY things, but considering that essentially ALL MUSIC, depending on perspective is out of tune (mean tuning, well tempered, just tuning, various historic tuning schemes etc.), I wonder if the problem is not self generated, if ones tolerance (having to teach a big group) simply is the problem.

I don't think that the instrument being played nor the quantity is critical. I think that stress is a function of attitude and has deeper roots.

As far as instruments not holding tune, that is certainly something that can be fixed - one instrument at a time.

If we do not have what it takes to teach big classes, then don't. I believe that teachers are born, not "taught".

Chemicals are certainly a workaround and not a solution.

I bet that there is much more to the story. My hunch is that to stay employed, taking the large group was delegated regardless of the teachers opinion or excuses why not.

I know I've certainly struggled at times with the trumpet!

Another option to consider is High Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation, which is done with a device attached to a wearable vest. This can loosen otherwise adherent mucous secretions, allowing them to be expelled by coughing.
A summary of results is attached. A discussion with your pulmonologist should determine whether it would be a useful treatment modality for you. The downside is that it is more expensive than the average trumpet (maybe even as expensive as a high end boutique model), but the upside is that insurance often covers it, unlike the boutique trumpet.

@thornybob pretty much my experience too - played trumpet HARD with a blues/rock/Steely Dan/Chicago band and I think I gave them my last efforts - ah well, off to Alto Sax - the right hand three fingers mimic trumpet quite well

@Bruce I've seen the x-rays - no doubt about it. No roots any more. As to gums/jaw - did not know the exact terminology. And yes, I know about the risks.

Unfortunately GeorgeB passed away in 2023.
Below is a link to his obituary. He was a very nice gentleman as well as a frequent and relevant contributor to this site. He has been missed.

@administrator Watch the video. There are studies that compare different wind instrument effects on ocular pressure.
